See Dave's new post, don't let this happen

What a bummer, I SOOOO wanted to be wrong on that point :'( As you say, at least you can get the rocker box off in the frame and assess the possible damage.Do the tappets feel slack when you try to lift them? just a thought in case the locknuts have worked loose and slacked the adjustment right off, although I do think it rather unlikely :-\  The only good thing is you are on this forum, so somebody may have a cam at a sensible price available :)

There is one more serious thing that could be wrong, and I've only seen it twice in 30 years of playing with sohc 750s, snapped camshaft, caused by incorrect re assemly of the cam carriers, it happened on a mates rat bike, using cam carriers from different bikes, cylinders 3+4 died, so he rode it 175 miles home on 2 cylinders :'(( But I certainly hope that isn't your problem!) You can eliminate this possibility doing a compression test on the duff cylinders, or possibly removing the tappet covers and running the engine, oil WONT spray out if the cam is broken. If oil sprays out, the cam is still in one piece, so see if someone will lend you a compression tester and check all 4 cylinders, that will give a good idea of the state of the valves (silly question, you have checked the valve clearances? because if theyre too tight the valves wont close properly ???) Still think it will not be an electrical fault though!

Funny you should mention ace bars, I bought a set on e-bay not an hour ago, but I bought them because they had both switchgears and master cylinder still attached, I dont actually want the bars! Give it about a week for them to arrive and for me to remove the bits I want, and they're yours. By the way, welcome to the forum, and you can't get better than a cb750! ;D

I have to agree with Mick, they were a popular mod back in the 70's (if you could afford them! ;)) Just keep the original wheels safe somewhere, and fit the casts! After all, it's YOUR bike, and if you like them, use them ;D

CB750 / Re: Oil leak - neutral switch 0-ring seal???
« on: September 11, 2011, 07:55:16 PM »
If it is the neutral switch O ring, then yes, it's a very simple fix, 1 bolt holds a little metal clamp piece, undo the bolt, thge clamp piece usually comes off with it, then wiggle the switch out (it's not threaded, but can be a bit stiff to remove, some just fall out) Fit the new O ring to the switch, and re assemble. DO use a genuine honda O ring though, Dave Silver has them as others may look okay but are often a fraction too thin and leak!

Might be a good idea to check carb balance, my good lady's cb650 shitehawk (Oops, Nighthawk) did the same, so we bought it for peanuts, if the noise stops when you put it in gear, that's probably a large part of it. (Cheap and easy fix!)

Personally I feel it's unlikely to be electrical, as if it were, you would have problems with 1+4 OR 2+3, as these cylinders share common points and coils. So fuel is probably the area to be looking at. Is it a K6 tank and tap setup? If it is, you'll have a single fuel line from the tap, going to a T piece which has 2 pipes coming from it, one feeding carbs 1+2, the other feeding 3+4. Are you sure the plugs are wet with petrol and not oil? Use a bit of clean white rag to wipe some of the wetness onto, if it's black it could be oil, (some pattern part valve stem seals are absolute crap! >:() if it was just petrol it should evaporate away in the sun quite easily

Hi Col, great story, so glad you still have and enjoy the bike ;D, just one question, why blank out part of the number plate on the later photos (blue tank) when it's clearly visible on the photo of it as a wreck (yellow tank)?

It's a pity no one wants to reproduce Tanks for CB750F1s, the ones I've bought all seem to rot out in the same place >:(, front caliper for the same would be nice too!

Also worth checking the bottom of the switch isn't loose where the plasic switch body joins the main metal lock body (assuming you're talking about a 400 four) The lock on my 750f1 (identical to 400 four) had a habit of doing the same, and it was because the plastic lugs on the electrical part of the switch had worn away with vibration (Did I really say VIBRATION on a Honda four? :-X) and was moving away from the lock body enough to break the connection, slap the bottom of the switch and it works again. A right pain in the butt, the only real solution is to get a new one, same switch onCB400f1/f2,  CB550f1/F2 CB650z CB750 f1/f2 and as someone bravely mentioned C.B.X.  Don't pay through the nose for one though, decent pattern ones are out there, found some on e-bay in the U.S. for just over

ooh arrrrr, don't complain about tractors if you live in the country, you'll be moaning about the smell of cowshit in the air next! ;D Biggest problem we have in the country is horse shit, right on the apex of a bend where you want your front wheel to be on the racing line! >:( Mind you, horses taste good with chips peas and mustard ;) On a more serious note, down my way (Junction 30, M5) I have seen many wonderful old sohc bikes, a real mint 400/4 in yellow, a 500/4 in dark green with original pipes too 8) If you want to come down sometime, we'll arrange a ride out, Taunton is less than 30 miles away, so very close really!

Looks good in principle, but I get the feeling you'd need 2 of them for any bike with 2 sets of points, whereas cars run on 1 set with a distributor

Oops, Thanks for that Steve, I should have read the complaint more carefully! :-[  The simple answer is to ask anything you want to know on the U.K. forum, because anything the americans can do, I'm sure it's been done better here, and at least the U.K. forum uses PROPER English ;D

Sorry you feel like that! I've only been on here a couple of weeks and have found the whole experience very satisfying. I've been on holiday from work so I've spent many hours trawling through the forum, but I know when I get back to work I'll only be able to grab an hour or so a week, and I'm sure many others are the same in this respect, work, home life tinkering with our bikes etc. Be patient, someone WILL read your post, and if they can help, they will. I hope you get the answers you're looking for, and start to enjoy the forum ;D
