CB750 / 750F2 erratic tick over.
« on: May 17, 2015, 09:28:32 AM »
I think this may have been covered extensively as it appears to be a common problem.

Cant seem to get a good reliable tick over with these PD carbs. The bike runs superb, but as the engine warms properly the tick over gets faster. Also if I turn the throttle control hard backward, to tension the close cable, the tick over drops. I have checked the setup of the cables and there is plenty of slack on them and the return spring pushes the shaft hard back against the throttle stop.

The carbs have been completely apart and thoroughly cleaned etc. I have however just noticed that two of the felt washers on the spindle shaft are missing, would that cause a problem? Does anybody know where I can get a set of these felt washers. Cant find them anywhere and they don't even have a part number in my book.

On the idle screws, can I just verify I am correct. When the screw is turned out does the idle mixture get richer or leaner?

Will get to the bottom of this eventually, just need a bit of patience and effort, "O" and a load of help from you guys again.

Cheers all.

CB350/400 / CB400 brake lines.
« on: May 16, 2015, 06:51:23 PM »
Hi. Could one of you guys with a 400/4 do me a little favour. Could you measure the length of your two flexible front brake lines. Am using the lower 400/4 handlebars on my 350/4 as the riding position is better, and am going to get some braided hoses made up. Also, does anybody know if Honda ever made a CB400/4 with twin disks. I'm sure they didn't but the brake line man insists they did? Thanks in advance. Roy.

CB350/400 / 350/400 engine seals.
« on: May 08, 2015, 05:36:31 PM »
Could any of you 350/400 gurus confirm that the engine seals for the 350 are the same as the 400. DSS sell a full set of seals for the 400 at a reasonable price, but the 350 seals are all sold separately at much higher cost. Am I safe to just order the 400 set. What a great forum, where else could you ask a question like that and even hope to get a correct answer. Brilliant.

Just took delivery of the new exhausts for the 350F project from CMS. Not cheap at £780 but the only way to do the project right. Opened the box in excited anticipation to find that the quality is absolutely dreadful. Have posted some pictures of the welds to show what I mean. These are completely unusable and should have been sent to the scrap bin not the chromers. What are CMS like for getting a refund. Cheers

CB750 / 750 Oil control jets.
« on: May 03, 2015, 11:05:34 AM »
Just had a horror moment reading another thread where it says "oil jets, what oil jets". Just like that engine builder, I didn't know about the oil jets either.

When I stripped the engines top end I found a problem with one of the cam carriers. The oil drilling to just one of the journals was blocked causing scoring, the other journal was okay. I replaced the carrier with a good used one, but as I didn't know the oil jets existed I didn't clean them (oops). As I say, only one side of the carrier was damaged, the other good. This probably means the oil jet was not blocked and oil was flowing, or they would both be damaged. I found the blockage in the carrier itself.

Is there an easy way to run the engine and verify oil flow, without oil blasting everywhere. Thought I may take the tank off and remove the tappet caps one at a time and see what happens. Is this a good plan, or am I stripping it again.

Cheers all.

CB350/400 / Unknown clocks maybe 350K
« on: May 03, 2015, 10:19:54 AM »
Okay ladies and gentlemen, it's quiz time!

Bought these clocks from DK for a 350F. They insist they are 350f but I know they are not. Your mission (should you choose to accept it) is to identify the bike they belong to. My opening guess is a 350K of some year? Over to you ;) ;)

Project Board / CB350F Restoration by royhall (NOW FINISHED)
« on: May 02, 2015, 08:22:07 AM »
Hi all. Since we have a new thread for projects, and I cant sleep, I thought I would give it a go! Not done this before so stick with me, I will sort the mess later as I learn. ;D

The 350 was bought unseen (I know) off eBay due to it being fairly complete and VERY cheap. The speedo and the USA paperwork say the bike has done 8061 miles. I don't think so, personally I would put it at more like 38000. Hooked up a good battery and a few squirts of carb cleaner had it firing for a couple of seconds, so there's hope. Obviously the thing wont run as it's well gummed up, and wouldn't risk the engine trying anyway. But anyway, I think it's a good starting point.

One item I am unsure about are the clocks. All the 350's I have seen so far have the warning lights mounted on a centre console. Mine appears to have just plain handlebar clamps. The frame number suggests it's an early bike so maybe it was changed later? Cant find any info on this so if anybody knows what that's all about, give me a nod.

Got the strip going and the wiring is a mess!

Anyway will have to sort the wiring at a later date. The bike came apart fairly easily mainly thanks to liberal amounts of PlusGas. Have got the engine on the bench now ready for a full strip down. Was hoping to just do the top end, but from what I have found so far I think a full strip down is the safer way to go.

Will post some more as the restoration moves on and time allows. Let me know if I'm boring you or you've seen it all before. Cheers all.

CB350/400 / Vapour blasting engine cases
« on: April 23, 2015, 12:55:28 PM »
Hi. guys. Just deciding what to do about painting or blasting the engine cases/barrels/head on the old 350. VHT paint tends to go a bit brittle over time so seriously thinking of getting it all vapour blasted and leaving it at that. Leaves a really nice satin silver finish but am a bit concerned about how durable its going to be. Has anybody tried it?

CB750 / PD carbs help required (old thread updated)
« on: April 17, 2015, 03:16:31 PM »
Hi all. Cant get over the finish line with my 750F2.

Am struggling to get the carbs to stop leaking petrol.

Short history: they were totally stripped and the gummed up bits soaked overnight in carb cleaner, they were then cleaned using guitar strings and compressed air, they were then ultrasonic cleaned and the outers vapour blasted, they were rebuilt with new float valves and gaskets/o-rings. They were bench tested for leaks and a crack with the mallet settled everything (no leaks), fitted them to the bike and gave the engine a run (no leaks), fitted the tank and went for a short ride around the block (no leaks), fixed a couple of non carb related small issues then helmet on for a longer run. Turned on the petrol and a leak from No.2, went for a short run in the hope it would settle (it didn't).

Stripped the carbs yet again and found all the float heights were perfect. So replaced the float valves again with Keyster items from DSS. When tested they leaked from 2 &4 and would not settle. Stripped again and set floats a bit higher to try to shut the valves a bit sooner. Now leaking on 1 2 & 4.

Am I missing something here as I'm starting to get desperate with this. Everything is spotlessly clean, the floats move freely, the float heights are right, the valves are on the third new set. I now have no idea where to go with this as I just don't know what's wrong with them and therefore how to fix it.

Could anybody who has knowledge of these things and lives anywhere near Thornton-Cleveleys Lancs call round and give me some pointers please. Or failing that, does anybody know a carb expert that I could send them to.

HELP!!! Yours sincerely, Desperate of Lancashire. :'(

« on: April 13, 2015, 03:15:45 PM »
Okay that's enough struggling, time to ask. I am trying to remove the worn out bushes from a CB350F swing arm. Does anybody know an easy way of doing this as they are well stuck. Cheers all.

CB350/400 / Royhall's 350F Rebuild Thread
« on: March 19, 2015, 04:29:25 PM »

Hi all.

As the 750F2 is all but finished, thought I would start a new project.

It arrived today and it's hard to believe the true horror of it all.

After the 750 going from scrapper to pristine I cant believe I'm doing it all again. Don't know a single thing about the CB350F so will be back again as a regular bothering the hell out of everybody, so thanks in advance.

Have posted some photo's so you to can live the nightmare that is my new baby (money pit).

Cheers.

CB750 / Accelerator pump
« on: March 13, 2015, 08:13:25 AM »
Here we go again with the dreaded F2 carbs.

Just re-furbed a set with as many new parts as are available. Carbs themselves are perfect, problem is now the accelerator pump.

It has a new diaphragm kit fitted and the non return valves are all clean. If I press the pump stem with a screwdriver they pump petrol perfectly, and the pump lever arm is free to move. But when I open the throttle its like the spring that pulls the lever arm across is not strong enough to operate the pump. So no petrol squirt.

Any ideas anybody?
