Project Board / 1967 CB450K0 Black Bomber Rebuild - By Royhall
« on: February 11, 2019, 08:33:23 PM »
Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen.

I have been thinking about doing this rebuild thread for a few months now and following some prompting from a few SOHC members I have decided to go ahead. A few of you may remember the 350F thread from a few years ago and hopefully this will be a similar format. Apologies if it's a bit similar to Davo's recent rebuild of his CL450, but I feel there are enough differences to make it interesting.

The bike. I bought this bike about 18 months ago from a forum member (anyone that knows him well will spot his front garden). It came with a fair pile of documentation to prove it's history which is never a bad thing. The bike has been stood for a great many years and is generally in pretty poor condition. It has also suffered what was reported to be a chain break which smashed the crankcases, but during the rebuild I shall touch a little bit more on that.

I'm not sure how quickly this one will progress as I don't have anywhere near as much time as I did when I rebuilt the 350F but am hoping for a steady progression. The rebuild actually started about 3 months ago and has been well documented in photo's so I shall try to get this thread up to date fairly soon. That's enough writing for now, so here are the pictures of the bike.

The Black Bomber Board / Bomber exhaust cams
« on: January 25, 2019, 03:00:57 PM »
Just sorting through and cleaning the Bomber engine parts and on inspection one of the exhaust cam lobes has some pitting. Got the best pictures I could manage. What's the best way forward with this as they are rocking horse, or is it okay to re-use? The problem is quite common on these as the oil flow to the exhaust cam is low. Or a long shot, has anyone got a spare exhaust cam in good condition for an early Black Bomber engine that they would be willing to sell.

The Black Bomber Board / CB450K0 valve stem seals
« on: January 13, 2019, 03:35:28 PM »
Anyone know if there is an alternative valve stem seal that can be used on the CB450K0 black bomber.

These are only umbrella type seals that don't fit to the valve guide, I have 4 of the later type but they fit to the later type valve guide.

The originals are virtually gone except for CSM who want £72 for 4 little rubber discs. May have to pay that price in the end but that's got to be the biggest rip off price on the build so far.

Pretty sure there must be an alternative from another model. Anybody know. Cheers.

Just got my Suzuki GS1000 paintwork back from Menno. Should be a really exciting moment, except the superb job menno has done has been undone by the f**kwit "I dont give a shit mail man" (or DHL as they call themselves). They have managed to put a lovely dent right in the front corner where you can't miss it. I hope Menno sent it insured mail. Not having much luck generally on the bike front at the moment. Poor Menno, he's already had a few issues with this.

Misc / Open / Simoniz VHT engine paint
« on: August 15, 2018, 11:29:00 AM »
I am 95% through painting a Black Bomber engine and have run out of paint. I am using the usual Simoniz SIMVHT31C thats a really good dull silver match for the original Honda colour. Unfortunately Simoniz have stopped making it and moved on to SIMVHT31D, the difference here being the C & D. Simoniz say it's the same colour. which it may be, but it is not the same finish. The D variant is a really smooth bright (and frankly horrible) finish that resembles cheap kids plastic jewellery. So anybody about to re-paint an engine beware.

Now to the problem. The C variant is advertised still (and I have even emailed sellers about this) but they always send the D variant thinking its the same. I now have 6 cans of the crap. So, does anyone have a spare half can of SIMVHT31C so I can finish this engine. The alternative is to have everything re-blasted and start again with something else. Simoniz have really dropped the ball with this one. Thanks all.

CB750 / Bad pattern points plate.
« on: July 27, 2018, 02:18:36 PM »
A while back I fitted a new ready built-up points plate from DSS, the one with the back plate cables points and condensers already fitted. Thought it was a good idea as the original cables were very frayed.

On a run out yesterday it decided to start misfiring so badly I was lucky to make it home. Checked it this morning and it wont start on 2&3. So looking at the corresponding points the anvils are out of parallel by miles, only making contact on the outer edges and are therefore very burnt. Top quality gear Mr Silvers is turning out there, lasted a whole 1000 miles. On checking, the other set are exactly the same.

After a good clean and reset I got it running okay just to prove it was the points. Serves me right for buying c***y pattern parts again, lost count now of how many times the Bitsa nemesis has bitten me. So anyone thinking of paying Silvers for one of these pattern items, DONT. This is the genuine one to buy:   https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB750F2-(Single-overhead-cam)/part_7187/

DynaS system here we come as my 750 is my only bike left with points. Goodbye iron age technology welcome to the 21st century.

CB750 / Pictures for OddJob

Ken.  The dimension you asked for is about 182mm (bit hard to be spot on as there is a rubber grommet at each end). Cheers Roy.

As my POS timing light has decided to be working sometimes and sometimes not, I need a replacement of good quality. Anybody used one, are they worth the money. Cheers all.

Misc / Open / Classic status (again)
« on: February 27, 2018, 06:49:35 PM »
Can someone remind me how this works, can't just remember. I have a bike registered in June 1979, can I claim Classic status from 1st January 2019 or do I have to wait until June 2019. Sorry I know we covered this a while ago, onset of alcohol induced dementia. 8)
