Title: CB500/4 K0 brown touch up paint
Post by: JamesH on December 31, 2015, 04:53:17 PM
Guys - need to touch in a couple of chips on my Brown 1971 500/4 K0. Anyone know of a suitable paint match off the shelf from somewhere like halfords or local OEM garage? Don't really want to go the RS paints route as I've found the match to be a bit hit and miss in the past...recommendations welcome. James

Why not ask Menno James ... you are probably his best UK customer/recommender  :D Lovely example BTW is it original? Pipes ?

Ha ha Julie and her nail varnish..!!

Good point Ash, I have a couple of paint sets to send off to Menno so should ask him anyway.

This was at the other garage when you came down to
Pickup your bike. I'm actually selling it shortly. Original pipes, paint, seat etc. Staggering original condition really.

The RH pipes have a couple of dents sadly, other than that a lovely bike...

Yeah - luckily they're literally tiny chips I just want to touch in, so something close as a single stage application would be ideal?

James have you got anybody local that fills rattle cans, my local man is mustard and matched the boss maroon mettallic in a can and gave me extra in a tin, filled the hole nearly to top finished with laquer from a touch up pen then used 2800 wet and dry wet with fairy liquid, cant see the repair and it was on the top

Hi Bryan - good idea and yes I have a guy just down the road, but let's just say his last effort was a little way off the mark. May try and find a local alternative...

Well, touching up candy is always very difficult. Even when I look at your nice candy garnet brown 500 I can see a difference in the sidepanels and the tank.
They were originaly not a set were they?

If the chips are realy tiny I would advise just to leave it like that. Quite often a touch up might look very amateuristic especialy when the paint is not 100% identical.
Call it verdigris. (I used a translator on this word.. Is it correct? I mean aged)

However: this is important.. is the pant chipped off all the way to the bare metal or is the basic layer still there.
If the basecoat is still there I could send you some candy garnet brown in a touch up bottle. You could try it with a very small pencil.
It would be: touching up and immediately whiping off. The trick is to leave just enough pant sticking to match the surrounding paint.
And you would need: fingerspitzengefühl.... (sensitivity just doesn't translate that right)

verdigris = the green colouring on aged copper.

When fixing pebble-chips on car hoods (err... zis is a UK forum, so zis is called a bonnet then  ;) ), I use toothpicks to just fill and level the the paint layer with a tiny drop (won't work if its down to the metal or already corroding)
Once dry very fine wet-sanding, polish, etc...

BTW: also I'm still due in shipping my K2 tank and side panes...  :-\
Got swamped with other issues and still searching for a really rigid carton... don't want to have that thing all banged up...
