CB750 / Rear wheel spacer
« on: October 31, 2014, 09:06:27 AM »
What I want to know is, where do all these Spacers go to?   :o

Is it one of those parts that are magically attracted to the deep, dark corners of Garages and Workshops?

. . . a replacement complete rear end from the scrappers was less than a helicoil kit.
Seriously?
I wouldn't go to that shop again  :o

That or you found a seriously cheap breakers   8)

Can't see any problem doing that.
Mind you, if you had the tooling and skill to do it, you may as well make an insert to fit in the head permanently.
No need to remove the head for either option either.

I'd replace them, as you have them apart.
There's no way that sort of minor defect would cause Brake failure, but they will only get worse over time.

I've just made some new Aluminium ones for my VFR400R . . .

I'd take one along to a machine shop and ask how much to replicate them in Stainless, it may not be too much at all, as it's a very simple job on a Lathe.

CB500/550 / Forks helicoils?
« on: September 14, 2014, 07:57:15 PM »
I work on Civil Aircraft for a living Bitsa, where money is no object during manufacture.
Many/most threads in Alloy components will either be Heli-coiled from the factory, or have 'solid' inserts fitted.

Ever heard of Case-Savers, particularly where Air-Cooled VWs are concerned (with their relatively soft Magnesium Alloy Crankcases)?

You can helicoil the spark plug hole, but never in situ, the swarf from drilling, and the tab from the helicoil would go straight into the head . . .
A bit of Aluminium swarf will do no harm inside the cylinder, it would most likely be blown out the exhaust before the engine had even fired.
It would be easy enough anyway, to remove the down-pipe for the cylinder, and shove a Vacuum cleaner hose in it's place, suck out any swarf as it's created.
The Helicoil Tang can go the same way, or use Needle-Nose Pliers to remove without dropping.

I agree that a solid insert (preferably with some sort of locking) is preferable.

You already have dissimilar metals involved in every head that exists (unless you either have a Steel head, or Aluminium Spark Plugs  ;)), so having a steel insert will be no problem.
Galvanic corrosion needs moisture to form, so it's unlikely to be a major problem in a Spark-plug bore.
It can be virtually eliminated as an issue anyway, with a little Never-Sieze, CopaSlip or similar.

Nope, you cannot helicoil one . . .
Why not?
A Helicoil is an insert anyway, or are you thinking of the more 'solid' machined inserts?

No reason it couldn't be fitted with a Helicoil, as long as there is enough good metal left once you've drilled out the damaged threads.
Could possibly be done in-situ, but you'd need to rig up some sort of drilling attachment to ensure you drilled the hole perfectly in-line with the original.
Much better to do it with the head off though, using a Milling machine, or a good pillar drill at the very least.

Helicoils are technically better than the original threaded holes.
You're spreading the load over more area (like having a larger diameter bolt), and you're not wearing the threads in the Forks each time you remove/refit the Bolts.

If all vehicle makers weren't so 'penny-pinching', they'd fit them in the first place  ::)

That's a nice Bike isn't it!

Maybe it's location didn't help, it would add a fair chunk of cash to get it over to Mainland UK.

Fingers crossed for the Jumble and Show.

Stuart's (the owner of the 810) bought this little beauty now . . .

Well, it didn't sell.
Over 950 views, and 37 watchers though, so some interest.

Will probably be taking it to the Kempton Bike Jumble on the 20th . . .

Misc / Open / Sywell Classic Pistons and Props show. 27/28th Sep
« on: September 05, 2014, 05:46:13 AM »
Anyone going to this?
http://www.sywellclassic.co.uk/

I'm going with the guy I went to the Belgian Classic TT with, he's taking a few Classic/Post Classic Race Bikes along, we'll be riding them round the Runway circuit they set up for the show.
Should be a good collection of Bikes there.

It's quite a 'niche/specialist/enthusiast's' thing though, so anyone contemplating it should know what it's worth.

We'll see I guess . . .

Keep up Mark, I mentioned that three posts back . . .  ;)

Fingers crossed someone wants it, should be competitive in the right hands.
I'd like to have tried it, if only in one of the parades, but Stuart (the owner) wanted to ride it.
