CB500/550 / Generator electrical cabling grommet
« on: January 28, 2021, 06:16:12 PM »
Are there any workaround or suggestions to repairing/replacing the plastic/rubber grommet items as shown below. The one on the left is so damaged and old that pieces are just falling off each time a touch it.

My current thought is to get plastic pieces 3d printed and creating an new cabling run for stator, coil, oil, neutral, etc which would be routed through these printed pieces and then epoxy to seal.

All suggestions and comments welcomed here

Tricks & Tips / Cleaning tips
« on: October 01, 2020, 10:57:01 PM »
Hi All,

Putting out a general question about how people go about cleaning/degreasing all the engine internals before a rebuild. Be interested to hear what process you follow and also products you use. Then once clean what assembly products would you recommend.

Misc / Open / UK Motorcycle regulations - Basics
« on: February 13, 2017, 08:25:39 PM »
Hi,

Would anyone know what the basic requirements are to get a bike street legal in the UK. Currently the plan is to rebuild the bike but very minimalistic.

Included so far for the build are the basics

- Headlight with high beam
- Brake light (black smoke in colour) connected to front brake only
- Rear indicators
- Speedo
- Killswitch
- license plate no light

- No front or rear mud guard but rear style cafe cowl

What else would be required to legally get this on the road

Tricks & Tips / Battery for converted 72 CB500
« on: November 01, 2016, 09:29:30 PM »
I am currently converting a 72 CB500 and am asking the experts here for advice on whether a Shorai LFX14A2-BS12 would be adequate for my build. The electrics are going to have a complete overall and I will be replacing all legacy with newer components such as a motor gadget M-unit, new R/R, and then LED headlight, LED brake and indicators. The ignition will be replaced with Dynatech coil and ignition system.

Does anyone have experience with smaller batteries in their builds and what should i look out for ?

CB500/550 / Engine teardown and inspection
« on: October 07, 2016, 09:19:42 AM »
Hi,

I recently purchased a '72 CB500 which was a bit rough around the edges to say the least with the intention of rebuilding this as a Cafe style racer. I have been taking my time with the stripping down of the bike and am now at the point where I am taking the engine apart which is a new skill in itself.

I have read that camshaft bearing surfaces should be inspected and should be smooth and shiny and if there is excessive wear it or it is scratched it should be replaced. My question here is what warrants excessive wear/scratches as I have seen as bad surfaces on posts where used have said this should be fine.

I have attached some images and would appreciate the professional opinion of the community.

There will be more questions the deeper down the rabbit hole I get.

Hi,

Are there any community users who know a machinist in the North of England that can take on engine / valve reworks at a reasonable price ? There seem to be no shortage down South or in the US but I am yet to find someone up north.
