Wow Spitfire at least you are making me feel young. I started on £20 a week and the avatar pic is my CB500 that I paid I think £720 in August 74 from HGB in Harrow.

I sorted out my old mags a while ago and I also have both of these and was reading through the rebuild this afternoon!
With horror I came to the picture of the clutch on P44 and read the line about the orientation of the top clutch plate. It is also in bold in the shop manual. I've just bolted up my 550F engine. I have no manual for the 550.

But I did have tucked away a clutch assy from a 550K1 and one from for a K3. Both do not seem to have the swept grooves in the top friction plate. Presume that the idea was dropped as a waste of money and 550s all have straight cut grooves.

Thanks, but that started me looking again and found these. Obviously not genuine, but might give them a go. Can't find my calipers, but look right dims. I think.

He has nearly 1.5 million items listed. Hope he can find them!

Makes you wonder, as you can pay £3+ each for these.
I paid £4 for three and thought I was doing ok.

Anyone know a source of the grommets that are on the mudguard stays etc.? At nearly £12 for a mudguard set, there must be another source.

Alan, If you take a pic of the profile (or draw around) with a rule or tape alongside and post it it would be useful. I am going on the material being about 13mm wide and 1mm thick unless you tell me otherwise.
Thanks, Phil

CB500/550 / Alternative 4-4 exhaust
« on: May 24, 2016, 10:06:05 PM »
Saw these on a bike in Italy and also on ebay.fr. Not sure what baffles (if any) but probably sound throaty and re-jetting required. May be a cheaper alternative and especially for K3 if it helps anyone.

CB500/550 / Re: Clutch lifter rod
« on: May 24, 2016, 06:36:56 PM »
Both of my 500 engines had the rod in two.(not broken) One had been very badly machined with a stub that fitted in a hole in the other part.
The other one had been done well, with a perfect part sphere machined into both parts (the LHS is short, only about 50mm) and a steel ball between the two. It has lasted for a number of years even though it is just in the ali. I check it every year and smear a little moly grease on it.

Thanks, I'll get some spring steel and have a go a forming a couple of bends...or I could go for something like this:

Looks like a bargain.

CB500/550 / Air filter spring
« on: May 23, 2016, 07:12:02 PM »
Hi, Have three 500/550s and none have the air filter retaining spring. Need advice to make, as not great at this.
Channel looks to be about 13mm. What type of steel to use and approx what thickness (gauge). I can use the cmsnl pic for approx shape unless anyone has anymore detail.
Thanks, Phil

CB500/550 / Re: HONDA CB550 K3 FRONT FORK TUBES
« on: May 19, 2016, 06:56:18 PM »
I have an F1 and had trouble getting a fork stanchion for this model. Strangely cruzinimage did not list them on ebay.uk and bought 1off from Germany. Only found the cruzinimage ones by searching ebay Australia!
There are listed three different fork tubes for the CB550:
K1, K2: 51410374003
F1: 51410390003
K3, K4: 51410404003
The differences are to do with the oil damping holes and some forks have a rebound spring and some not, but I never did find all the details.
This pic from an ebay listing in the US gave some detail of parts that the F had over the K1.

I have a couple of the oil control valves. Think they came from a cb550, but are the same I think.
PM me if interested.

CB500/550 / Re: CB550K3 - Have I go the right bars?
« on: May 04, 2016, 12:31:53 PM »
Ok I think I know your problem.
I have an unrestored US K3 import sitting in my garage. The cables are routed to the LHS of the tank. The bars are 75cm tip to tip and about 11cm rise. Also restoring an F1. Just measuring the opening cable, the K3 cable is about 6cm longer.
Opening cable measuring the outer: Not including the 90 deg bend the K3 is 92cm to the end of the threaded section at the carbs. My F1 cable is 86cm.
