Well I hoped to be posting a few shots of a sea of bikes at Squires Milk Bar at Sherburn in Elmet, last night but sadly, Houston, we have a problem!
The first time in 21 years Rosey has stopped a journey through failure!
Just got through Boston Spa, opened her up on the nice fat A road and a plug gave up and she started to pop on 3!!! Bugger.
Limped 22miles home on three pots and currently trying to find 4 plugs to get her fettled for the long ride home. Naturally these are the hardest plugs in the world to find unless you want to spend £29.40 each on them………..nope not I!
Found three, just need one more!
Bit of a worry as it’s either a plug or a coil……. Hoping on the former rather than the latter but a poke about will no doubt identify the issue……..fingers crossed!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230713/44a1f08dff553fae8d89d2ee151e64e0.jpg)

Cheers but Boston Spa, North Yorkshire, near Wetherby. Managed to get some plugs at great expense so starting there. I’ll swap the coils round and see if it’s one of them if not plugs but might be as have one cold pipe on number 3 at the back.

Open the carb drain screws and see if it's not petrol related first. Presuming it's one of the carb versions of course.
-
Speedo would have been an optional extra on the Sunbeam
It had been fitted Bryan, first thing I spotted was the drive gear inside the front hub, the cover is missing as you can see and it showed signs of being fitted but then removed. Same for where the speedo used to sit, signs of it being there. I concluded it was away being refurbished but he still wanted to ride the bike.
-
FI bud, I’ve part numbered it about and it appears from Honda, £176.87 but as the Honda cuvic shares the same pack, £48 from euro, delivered if required.
Just getting into it now. But running on three, soon as you open it slightly, it bangs like crazy from the pot suspected. I reckon either no spark and the unused fuel’s hitting the pipe when hot and popping. That’s coil or plug to start on…….
We’ll see shortly

Very rare for a Viffer to break down Roo although yours does have some miles on it so maybe some components are just getting to that age to call it a day. That's a useful but of info about the FI, do you know if the same part fits the Fix models?
Cracking bikes there Ken, the Morini is very sweet, they were always great looking bikes and especially the 350 Sports although twice the price of a Norton Commando when new!

Yes, that would have been handy Bryan.
-
Nooo, that would be far too easy
Took the coil pack out and the plug came out with it. It appears. The only time it’s had its plugs changed at a shop was while I was in hospital a couple of years ago, the gorilla tech had caught the thread and slammed the crooked plug into the thread and tightened the coil down onto it. The electrode has arc’d so much it’s melted and sent all the molten shit into the thread. I now have to find a spot where I can pick up an M10 x 1.0 metric fine tap tmrw to try to get a plug down far enough into decent thread to catch and seat properly. The heads got to come off anyway so I’ll get it sorted but just need to lump it home for Sunday mornin. My pal here has donated his MT09 for parts chasing bless him
Check that out for a hammered plug!
It’s some 750’s Dave but all the Fi and VTEC up to 09

Snap! I've had one ever since apart from a spell with its so-called successor, the Triumph ST1050 that was nowhere near a good as a VFR :(
-
98 800 FI in Red. Wish I’d never sold it. Took me on multiple euro tours and only one reg/rect failure. Mint.
-
Loads of grease on the tap before use Roo, and spin the motor over before fitting new plug to blow any shite out
-
Crikey Roo. Just catching up with this. What a bummer. And down to somebody else doing a crap job. Good luck with it mate...
-
Agree with Steve, could you put it over on another thread Roo ? We all like to yak about something like this :)
Don't want to disturb too much the thread about John's eating exploits around the country ;D
Though if that plug came out of the head like that, then I doubt there's much there to tap into :o
-
Surprisingly there’s a fair bit but where all the kilter shite has gone in I just can’t get anything to start in there. It’ll have to be a new thread if not salvageable. Twitchy bum moment doing this but up for the challenge.
Worst plug I’ve ever seen tbh!

Roo, probably the worst plug we have all seen! :o Hope its fixable....

Old engineering method, in face of having bugger all correct tools....cut a U shaped V in a plug thread from one end to other. Leaving the sides vertical where they meet the thread top peak. De-burr the thread grooves with small file....you've now a "tapping" plug to use.
Put it in the hole, wind backward until you feel the thread lead drop into engagement with old thread (so you're not out of step on the threads) then start to wind it in slowly to clean out any threads that are there.
Use grease as Bryan says.
-

I’ll do it, but not from my phone. Back at a PC later.

I hope I never pull anything like that from any of my bikes Roo! Running lean? Looks like some one has attacked it with an acetylene torch. You definately win worst plug of the year! 😂
-
Sadly she’s dead, there’s no thread to get at to redress under closer inspection and the tap pretty much dropped straight down it. It’s got to be hellicoiled or more than likely an insert putting it in. Can’t try to drill and insert one at that depth, I couldn’t guarentee the results tbh………and it would be gash!
Needless to say that’s the summer over for the bikes, can’t afford any of that til later in the year which is a bit depressing. Hopefully I can retrieve my green flag stuff off this phone and try to get it dragged home. Mortally wounded, first time in 20 years………..gutted!
And 300 miles from home

That's a real bummer, Roo. I've never seen a plug as bad as that, I'm surprised it didn't blow out of the head. Not much holding it in. I hope the recovery goes well. 🤞

Try this kit Roo.

Cheap enough, has M10 x 1.00.
If you're not confident of doing the job find an engineer to do it for you. Maybe Matt could help. I'd be very careful using a drill on a plug thread, they have a tendency to suddenly grab and tilt sideways, I found a reamer worked much better. Not sure what size my reamer is as I can't find it ATM, suspect it's either 12 or 14 though. Maybe something like this, drill size is 10.3 for a M10 x 1.00 helicoil. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234820266622?hash=item36ac60ea7e:g:xzcAAOSwgLJjme34&amdata=enc%3AAQAIAAAAwMwrFUBJstzNCqgqDrxI34hI8cQDCU5V72SxHFMIg8AS2K49Op%2FQH6X4JDzVDDcylNIio2RazWvEy4gfs8JFMeT96QKuqRmT%2BGNXyNRVxgo%2FVMIBSLdMni3P6l64229UxVT13L2BgtQyoACQpvJqZ9mktbXb5Xdom8I8FLNrWYgdybdnr8C3qDfia9sQ8GHeRy3VCbm8EvsSvmj6%2BpK2rS4RK%2BDHc9ndszPKamrBijtmtAd7BERtRuRD00t%2BKPEmVA%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR_ry1M-qYg

We used to do the cd175 with the drill clamed in molegrips and turning by hand, there is not much to come out

There must be a engineering shop in Leeds that can put a insert in for you ;)
-
I suppose the issue is putting an insert in with the head off the bike which I'm sure you don't want to do miles from home! Moral support if you need it on your return!
-
Yeah the heads got to come off and not doing it here, it’ll be too much faff and too far from home for major surgery like that.
Rode it back to my digs on three pots and she went surprising well apart from the Parp from the air popping out of the plug hole under the coil pack. Got a V3 600!
Does that qualify for Moto GP?
If the monsoons end I may lump it back early in the morning say 3am to reduce the grief but unsure if my mechanical sympathy will stretch that far…….
The LHG’s back from work and going to fetch my insurance details so I can bell recovery off that as I think it’s included on the policy. Due to a phone swap I don’t have copies on my phone like the prat I am
Bit cheesed off as it’s my bike but I’ll sort it by hook or by crook.

I would advise not to ride the bike as un burnt fuel will contaminate the oil, the oil will get very weak and damage the good parts of the engine ;)
-
Roo, can you unplug the injector or does that screw up the ECU?
-
Hire a van in Leeds from a national company and take it home, then drop the van off at a local depot. Seems the safest and most economical way of going about it?
-
You could try cleaning the hole with carb cleaner to de contaminate, the sticking a new plug in with Isopon, leave to cure properly and try it then.
It may hold, we used to use it to bond aluminium to base plate for milling on non uniform structures, holds really well but complete b'#stard to get it to release afterwards.
If successful, you can just wind the plug out when you need to repair with head off.
-
If you did try & ride it back as it is the sump dilution by unburnt petrol might not be too bad as a hot engine would vent some out of the oil.
As Grahame said not advisable but it's not like you are using it except for a short period. When my 400 was on 2 cylinders for the first 80/100 miles the oil had no petrol smell though I have changed it to be safe.
Not sure how far you are from home but you could ride 100 miles at sensible engine revs then change the oil at every 100 miles.
Beware of fire risks !
-
Managed to blag a space on a low loader of a pal who’s running some stuff down south. The coffee is on me for the trip but I can raise to that. It’s howling down here in sunny Yarkshire so quite happy with that

I’ve managed to buy a second hand head complete off a 23k bike that’s being broken due to a front end crash.
The cost of a timesert and or helicoil which I would never trust in a spark plug hole, (I know they’re ok but it would always be in my mind) plus the crazy price of gaskets would send the repair out of reach at the min at around £200.
The head was £40 delivered!……..no brainer
I have to take the swingarm off, electrics, hoses, the lot and drop the motor to allow access which I’m not looking forward to but planning on swapping heads providing the new one checks out.
Currently chasing head gasket specs and part numbers, they’re not only dear but hard to find even when you have identified which one of the 11 listed you need…….

You are over thinking this too much :o I have done thousands on inserts on spark plug threads over the years and never known one to fail.
If it is a hard to get to cylinder , just pop the engine out and take it to a old school engineering shop. They should charge about £50 to do the job.
Any good engineer will know to turn over the engine until the inlet valve is closed, attach a vacuum to the exhaust port and have the job done in 15 minutes ;)
If any engineer wants to use a Helicoil, then don't use them as, a helicoil is only good on blind threads or a thread that is never going to be removed for servicing .
-
All well and good but not the case and there aren’t any ‘old school’ engineers where I am that are willing to go near it for less than £65-80 Not over thinking anything, just being realistic with what’s available Graham. As stated, far easier and cheaper to replace the head which is what’s happening, pig of a job and a far reach from the simple SOHC lump hence the research and prep required, not to mention the space required to remove, clean and store everything once it’s off the bike.

Roo, is the engine injection? If So, there is a mass of 'stuff' connected to it and I can understand your trepidation. Let me know if you need the tea brewing!

Yeah it’s injected and the wiring associated is mental. I’ll put a piccy up of her with no clothes on, they really couldn’t have crammed anything else under there. You’ll understand when you see it. Hoping to rip into it later this week once I’ve cleared the decks a bit.

In this house we have, respectively, the Queen, Prince and Princess of Bourbon, in the great biscuit debates . Me, rather partial to a Scottish biscuit in opposition.
Though I can understand another type of Bourbon late into the night when you look at all those pieces of VF strewn all over ;D
-
I'm a Ginger Nut fan - I was raised on McVities but pretty much any brand will do - only has to pass the dunking test - if it falls into my Coffee before exiting the cup then it's a fail.
Make sure you take plenty of pics Roo for the wiring routes - if it's anything like modern cars the wiring connectors are pretty much impossible to fit incorrectly - beware you do not snap off any of the connector clips they are difficult to replace - some are a bit of a Rubik's Cube to release plus heat makes them brittle.

Yeah, tucked up in the shed while I prepare and research….

There’s a lot of variations Bryan and about 11 listed!!!
That be looks the right one Ken but I need to cross ref the numbers…..

£40well spent

Got on it today and after re jigging the workshop to erect scaffolding to hang the bike off and create room for all the stuff coming off the frame, I set about stripping Rosey to drop the motor.
So far so good but after 170+miles, the filth on the engine is awful………my OCD alarms are already going off and it’s not even out yet.
No broken fasteners but a few knackered ones that will need to be replaced but
So far, so good.
Front pipes, foot rest hangers, swing arm and shock off and it should be ready to drop out………or fall out, one of the two.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230730/0482bca8930afb338a4404c3389f3b53.jpg)

Roo, good to see you have started and hopefully it will be fairly plain sailing ;)

Looks very complex and tight. Much as I loved my viffer don’t think I’ll be rushing to scratch my knuckles and restore one of them. Good luck sorting - so many around making that head a bargain, nice lateral thinking over a repair.
-
What's the plan Roo just fit the newly acquired c/head or will you be tempted at 170k miles to do other stuff when the engine is out?
-
No I can’t help myself but it will get some nannying no doubt but I’ve a rally to go to in Cornwall I. September so it has to be ready for that (fingers crossed )

After a fighting effort, progress stands at all but a rusted/dissolved fastener that’s soaking in Gas Gas penetrant along with the centre stand bolts and one stubborn bolt holding the LHS footrest hanger on.
One necked off bolt sadly, on the other side but everything else is off now and the bike is free swinging from the ceiling ready to have the lump out tomorrow evening with any luck. By far THE most complicated thing I’ve ever worked on and a right challenge but surreptitiously enjoying it………sort of

Now that's what I call a unique business opportunity for someone. Open up a biscuit and cake shop next to Halfords and other bloke type shops such as Wicks etc. A sure fire profit earner. Forget the patisserie and latte shops in Westfield, what blokes need are real biscuits, cakes and tea😁.
Sounds like you are making good progress Roo. Like all these jobs there's always the hidden nasties to deal with along the way.
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
Hidden nasties and a ‘triping’ error in the service manual meaning that if you undo both rear mount bolts the sodding frame separates from the subframe hinging the bike in the middle. When you’ve got it suspended from the rear end and jacking it from the front it’s a proper yikes moment!
There’s actually only one rear mount bolt not as it was written , described as ‘pairs’ of engine mounts, eg, two a side.
It wasn’t until I released the centre ones that the whole lot went down with a thud…..eek!
Had to put a 3rd strop on a further roof support support to move the fulcrum point to bring the two halves together and after a bit of head scratching I sorted it but it put an extra hour and a half on my night
Thought it was going to be a pig and up until that point it was going relatively well. One necked of bolt from the centre stand and the 8mm nut attaching the cable to the starter motor was solid so had to be surgically removed with the Dremel to cut the nut in half but not too bad.
Got to clean the motor off and then the interesting bit starts and I’ll attack the head.
Phew!

Evening all,
Stripped her down after a bit more homework and some good advice and was pleasantly surprised for once. It is a Honda after all!
I had fears of the pot being holed as someone previously mentioned and I bobbed a camera in there and saw nothing but was still wondering. Anyhoo, took the head off and although you can see where the electrode gave up and hit the pot, there is no damage!
Turned the engine and saw no scores on the bore and still good honing marks so I think I’ve dodged a bullet there!
Still waiting on a head gasket from Japan, on special order but happy to bob it together when it comes with little else engine work except a monster clean and a tickle up. Might push the boat out and bob some new hoses on her but for the most part, quite salvageable I fink. Whoop whoop, the old girl will go on. (Firework. Emoji)
Spot the impact mark and the thread on the plug hole, completely eroded away. I actually think the thread gave up under pressure and the plug hit the top of the pot, knocking the electrode off before it blew the debris straight out of the exhaust. Possibility anyway. The cleaning will begin tomorrow night!(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230812/b2520beac62060844c33a28b5bbac624.jpg)

Great news, Roo.👍👍
-
Great the work is progressing, and restricted to just the top end.(although still a lot of work)😜
-
Top work you capable man!
I would say the fact gasket special order is a direct result of how reliable those things are. Nobody needs to take them apart because they don't break!
-
The plug should not have been able to go further down and hit the piston as it stops on the plug gasket, unless the very end broke off only the electrode should have hit
-
It’s just the end then, it was well after 1am when I wrote that, all in all a slight win.
Preparing for the costing up of the shims required to get this back together, think it’s gonna be a dear but hoping for minimum expenditure on shims if I can help it, but I’ll have to wait for gaskets to appear before I can get that far.
Cleaning stuff tonight………..just for a change

Top work you capable man!
I would say the fact gasket special order is a direct result of how reliable those things are. Nobody needs to take them apart because they don't break!
My thoughts exactly Tim. The few places I did call all said the same thing, they never fail! Reassuring

Great the work is progressing, and restricted to just the top end.(although still a lot of work)
Never worked on such a thing that required this much prep to do a relatively straight forward job. Super impressed by the engineering in the motor, it’s a proper thing and amazed at the simplicity in it’s complexity if you know what I mean?

Just make sure that you just de coke the valves and do not remove the black Teflon type coating from them. The Honda valves had this special heat resistant coating and you can not even lap them in. You regrind the valve seats to match the valve ;)
-
The new head’s really clean so won’t need to spend hours on it. Thanks for the heads up and I’m already aware of the Teflon coating to watch out for
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
-
You can reshim the head on the bench whilst waiting for the gasket, just have one cam in at a time, knowing Hondas it wont need it anyway plus you have the spares from the old head
-
What size are the shims Roo, I have quite a few that fit my CB1300, measure the old ones and the gap and calculate what size is needed and I'll see if I have it in stock, I have about 30-40 of them. I think mine are 7.48mm
-
Considering the miles on your bike those valves look amazing - must be a great bike.👍
-
Cheers Bryan, starting prepping a bit today for getting done doing exactly as you mentioned. Saw a chap do it on a video today so gonna do it while it’s out on the bench. The replacement head has done hardly any miles so not expecting much to be honest but thanks for the offer Ken, I’ll be in touch.
Clean isn’t it Ted, I was quite happy with that visually.

Engine all done but a proper pug to time up. Realised after a while, having the cam chain adjuster partially engaged helps a great deal. All done and on the stool in the garden. Taped up and waterproofed for a proper degrease tomorrow. I still have the cans to torque down but can’t until Andy bobs over tmrw with his 1/4 drive wrench. Ihavent got one that goes as low as 9ft/lbs which is the requirement for the cam holders.
All but two of the shims on the new head were in tolerance and by juggling about with the old ones off my head, managed a full set in spec

Satisfying but absolutely terrible to work on. The engineering is awesome but like I said before, they couldn’t have squeezed any more stuff under the fairings, it’s absolutely stuffed in there with zero room for anything else. Can’t wait to get the crap off it though, my OCD-ometer is jangling off the hook

Looking good Roo. Are you not going to polish the cases before it goes back in ;D.
Agree about the lack of room in there, I stripped my FiX last winter to give it a good clean and was amazed with how tight the packaging is. Still the best bike Honda ever made though imho.
It's a big day for my own Viffer tomorrow when I will be forced to decide it's future :'(
-
Lots of copperslip and screwed in by hand first on the plugs is it?
-
What you getting rid for Dave, thought you'd just fettled it to keep it? The design on paper/computer fr this must have been a right thing, there is literally no spare room for anything, even wiring for the power commander abd charging tails for the optimate are a squeeze. I agree completely about the best bike Honda made, there's a reason for that and its simply the build quality. Inside mine is still mint, just the outside that needs the tlc but thats only through neglect due it it not needing any nannying
Bobbed an old set of plugs in for the wash and some paper filled, 'jonny glove fingers' into the spark plug tunnels before the wash but yes Bryan, ever so delicately coaxed in by hand for me! ;D

Mr Khan The Dictator may be doing it for me Roo. Taking it for it's ULEZ compliance test tomorrow. £175 for a known fail. The guy who's doing it thinks he might be able to tune it to comply and then it's another £75 retest fee. Khan has a licence to print money!
Good luck with the cleaning, don't forget to buy a new toothbrush as yours will be worn out!

As predicted, that was a bit of a bugger! Fitted it a bit unconventionally by jacking the back up and with the motor on timbers and a concrete block, slowly lower the rear over the engine.
That was the easy bit, getting the bolts and spacers to line up was the hold up. If it was on a trolley Jack you’d have more control but I don’t have one and like a challenge. With a bit of a wiggle I got it but very awkward.

I’ve all on pressing the right button to spell a word right so not promising but see how I go
Bought another VTEC yesterday and rode it back from Pompey. It’s a crash damage jobby, just needs a nose cone and a nanny and it’ll be going up on the net for a quick flip. Hopefully a couple of quid in it to fund the paint and a few bits on the 550 to finish it off as I’ve run out of dosh at the min to get it all buttoned up. Been an expensive year so far!
Had the heads up from a pal so went for a look yesterday and snapped it up. The chap had a sub 30mph get off and decided at 62 he shouldn’t be riding bikes anymore.
Charcoal grey, 59 plate with 37k on the clock. Aftermarket cans and a few other mods, new tyres, 11 months ticket ands service done in June but a clean bike and rides lovely.
Not as fast as mine though, I was quite surprised but mine has been breathed on mind(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230820/5a1d9a6407f43bc14c7b8e5e378d02a6.jpg)

More progress this evening for just a couple of hours. It’s routing everything to get it all to fit which is taking the time. Fuel injection on, filter in, lid on and buttoned up. Cool beans and strangely satisfying
Hope to get the exhaust tackled tmrw with a bit of luck and we’ll have a test fire possibly Thursday all being well and the amount of shed time I can organise. Still getting there.
Oh, nearly forgot; the only bolt that necked off in the disassembly process; although there’s no mention of it in the manual and appears to be the only one on the bike………is a left hand thread of all things! Who knew??
No mention of it anywhere in-the workshop manual or the Haynes liar but on the parts fiche as I discovered when ordering a replacement. It’s one of the centre stand bolts

Although late in from work, had a few good hours in the shed tonight and she’s ready to fire a bit later in the week. Just need to bleed the clutch, bleed the back brake, which was on the cards anyway and put the rear wheel on.
Quite a lot of backwards and forwards re routing cables over bolts and spacers and stuff to get the right length to connect up but I’m pretty happy how she’s sitting, bless her.
Bobbed a spare tank on to run her up and everything primed up. Fuel pumps happy, got good oil pressure and the light out on turn over, coolant’s in and a splash of motion lotion in the tank. Ready to go.

Hey Roo, some good news for you. My 1999 VFR800FiX passed its ULEZ compliance test. It failed the first test (£175 for that) but the mechanic who's an ex BEMSE champion told me he could tune it out. Basically the NOX level was 18, it needed to be 15 and below to pass. He tuned the engine to lean off the mixture during deceleration (when it's not needed anyway). Following the retest the NOX was down to 13 and a pass. Total cost was £290 with the retest and tune. The bike showed up as compliant the next day :D.
So, just in case you need to get your Viffer tested I can recommend using ULEZ Testing UK. They are based in Stevenage and unlike all the other ULEZ test stations they do not fit a £300 Cat in the exhaust but tune the bike instead. You can also see the bike on the Dyno and have a large flat screen in front of you so you can see the test as it happens with the NOX level readings. Gary is the owner and really helpful even supplying tea and an open tub of free biscuits 👍. There was absolutely no change in the performance of the bike at all. The mighty Viffer lives on👍

Well, ran her up tonight, or tried to.
She’s firing on only two and only on the throttle, the two in the head I’ve swapped at the rear of the lump.
Got sparks at the front two so the wires appear to be fine so thunking about it, it springs to mind of a fuel starvation to those two pots via the fuel injection.
There are two plugs into the fuel rails which go to the engine wizardry so I suspect I’ve either not plugged them in properly or somethings a bit tight and the connectors pulled a bit. I’ll probably check tmrw when I have a proper look, to see if the front two plugs are wet before I start pulling bits off her again first but I suspect it’s a fuel thing. There are no Fi warning lights on the dash so I reckon I’ll check that as my main point of investigation. Small progress never the less and was expecting some degree of niggles after all that’s been done, especially weaving that loom around the engine with zero room for any error, it was a fairly labour intensive affair and not for the faint hearted.
I’ve done something anyway but I’m sure I can track it down with a bit if a look and some biscuits.

Weren’t they the ones that had the chocolate cams that had a huge recall when they came out, can’t remember?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That was the original VF750 Roo. I seem to remember Honda issued a recall on the first ones. The problem was the cams had too high a lift on the lobes and this put a huge strain on the lobes and wore them out hence the chocolate camshaft reputation. There was also an issue with the top end oil feed that made matters even worse and Honda dealers were told to use a special oil additive that 'stuck' to the cams when they were idle and would protect them on initial start up. The whole episode nearly bankrupted Honda and was the main reason why they redesigned the engine to use very expensive cam gear drive, they had a reputation to pull out the dustbin! I heard they lost money on every cam gear VFR they built but it was a cheaper alternative to having a trashed reputation and no sales of V4's. Funnily enough the same problem did not afflict the VF1000 although the more upmarket VF1000R was fitted with cam gear drive.
It could have been worse, it could have been a VF750S as they got in the US (and a few here), chocolate camshafts AND cracking frames!
Reminds me of a joke doing the rounds just before the VF750:
Knock, Knock
Who's There?
Honda CX500 ;D
-
Just read this from start to finish, and what an epic yarn it is, fantastic perseverance and skill in getting this far, hope it works out right.

-
Thanks chaps,
Dave I thought that HRC had a massive input on the VF100R hence the cam driven wizardry etc, had one of those and nearly bought another a couple of years ago but took my rose tinted glasses off just in time and bought a box of bits Ducati853 instead DOH!
The issues I’ve had is that the Honda WS manual says to tighten down the cam holders in a specific way, all 14 bolts per holder but if you do as they instruct the exhaust cam jumps two teeth on torquing down. This continued for over ten attempts on getting it right before I had a bit of a tantrum and set the specs in the wrong order, went in perfect first time,, so that’s two inconsistencies in the manual now. I don’t mind do much but when I t’s that critical you’d think they’d have made sure the instructions are correct. It’s not like there are any special tools required………..except patience. I’ll get her all buttoned up and prod the start button later

Table would not bolt down on the base and there was a gap of about 7mm that would not close up.Turns out there was a couple of locating bracketts with a spigot that keyed into the saw unit itself, allowing the blade tilt function. They were upside down! I was well pissed mucking about for over an hour taking it to bits and reassembling. Then my lad pipes up and points out the issue. That was after me giving it "I've been alive along time and know these things". It really racks him off so I constantly say it but boy did he enjoy thay one!

He is a tool and there's nothing special about him Tim.

See what you’ve done there Tim, you’ve woken it up haven’t you
Here’s that joke I told Ken the other night when we were having a chuckle on the phone.
“How do you know ET comes from Stockport?”
“Because he looks like he does!”
Made I laugh

It’s not like there are any special tools required………..except patience. I’ll get her all buttoned up and prod the start button later

Hey ET would be the looker on our estate Roo, we'd be looking at him going "Who's that fella, he must be an alien he's so good looking"
Saying that though, when I saw Roo in the flesh, images of villagers running around with torches and pitchforks came to mind. That's what Roo stands for Tim, Remains Of Others.

Roo is the only person (And I say that with tongue in cheek) that has 7 passports, when he enters the USA he needs to produce them all, having 7 sets of DNA, the customs blokes know him by now and have nicknamed him "Franky"
What tankard does Roo drink his beer in? A Stein of course.
You want me to go on??? :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Hey that reminds me.
Guess what I bought the other day.
An original handbook for the CB550F, goes under the seat. Really good condition as well. Also got a CB550F toolkit as well.

Back to your bike Roo - have you got the Viffer actually running yet or has the tropical weather stoped progress?
-
Tried to fire her up earlier and exactly the same problem not firing either front two. I span the motor about 4 times by the crank before buttoning it all up and all was spot on. Try and start it, coughs and farts and is obviously timed wrong. Just taken it all apart again and indeed the exhaust cam has jumped two teeth. I’m good at the front, good on the inlet at the rear, it’s just the exhaust cam that moves. Baffling but I’ll start again and have another go!
Bit tedious but needs sorting so still at it for a while yet. Think I might take the FI off again and check all the connectors to the front two but I’m spit on I think. We’ll see…….

View from 10000 feet seems most likely to be timing rather than FI. Are the plugs wet, is it possible to see an injector working removed from engine ? Good luck Roo.
-
Squirt a little e-z-start down the non fiting inlets and try it, simple way to see if there's no fuel but will run.
-
If you shine a light down the inlet tracts on the bob firing front cylinders you can see fuel in the valves, haven’t tried to squirt any ‘hurry up’ down the inlets yer but have a good spark at the plugs. I’ll go have a go and report back……

Strange it keeps jumping teeth. Has the VFRDiscussion group have any suggestions?
You say 'good on the front' and that the rear 'exhaust cam moves' - how come the front 2 cyls don't fire? (unless I'm mis-reading you!)
I wish I could be more help....
-
I have no idea which is the conundrum front pipes stone cold but the rear two are firing just at an awful rate and round. Going back out until the breach in half an hour with fresh eyes.

Evwening all,
firstly apologies for the lack of info, I've had my hands full a bit, dashing about doing this hat and the other.
Secondly, Rose is officially fixed......whoopwhoop :) :) :) :)
I had a right head scratchover a good packet of chocolate Rich Tea's, knowing that it was deffo a timing thing but couldn't understand at what point I could start at to get a satisfactory set up. The facgt that i hadn't touched the front two pots meant that it was here to look and use as a datum. With that in mind I set up what was supposed to be TDC on number one, which is as you'd expect, located just under your left buttocl cheek :o Straight away I could see that the marks were 180 out on the rear sprockets and although marked at the front, not the marks I'd been using initially. To check it I couldnt find any corresponding marks on the front set of cam sprockets so decided, just for a sense check , call 'Captain Happy' himself and gave Ken a call. His cam position knowledge far exceeds mine so it was a good shout and worth the endless dad jokes, tactless Mancunian attempts at humour and not being able to get a word in as a theory was created.
Anyway, after two coffees, a couple of rollie's and a manual download later, a small diagram/picture was seen by Ken which showed where the front bank should be on the sprockets at any any given time. Splendid! I'd simply overlooked the page with it on and it was in a silly place in the process meaning its easy to miss, never the less I whipped the rear cams off again, tipped her round 180 and refitted to Cyl 3 on comp @TDC. span her over from the crank and all was good. So on with all the air box again and associated spaghetti, tank on Fuel hooked and she fired straight away but on 3 pots still with the front pot number 4 at the right stone cold. Under closer inspection it appears I had a chaffed wire which kept failing so the soldering kit was out and she's now back on 4.
Tick over was mental at about 3k so off came the tank, associated spaghetti, airbox and connectors and under close inspection to the hose routing, an issue was seen just keeping the injector bar from closing completely due to the hose just routed a little differently. A bit of a fiddle later and its back to burbling but still needs a few tweaks to get he tickover set again, its been knocked during all the carrying on with the motor out etc so a few niggles were expected. I had her out on a few test rides to iron out issues but they were all simple fixes thankfully Needless to say shes back to her rude health and currently dripping wet outside after a mostly wet, yet enjoyable bimble around the Mendips this afternoon 8) ;) ;)

OK Triumph T110, 1960 vintage with magneto. For years and years timed with a pencil down the plug hole on the rh cylinder, just once i did it on the lh cylinder and it ran like a sack of shite. Ended up checking timing on both and found 23 deg difference between cylinders due to cam ring wear and spent 6 hours with a slip stone evening it out.

Well done "OdRoo".

Well done Roo👍. You can't keep a mighty VFR down for long. I didn't mention it at the time but there's a guy running a YouTube channel called My Restoration. It's a pretty good watch as he's done a few bikes. One of the restorations was a VFR800. He took the cams out and when he set the valve timing he got it very wrong and managed to break a camshaft! Luckily both you and Ken have considerably more skill and got it right👍

Brilliant news Roo! Happy biking! 👍👍

Yeah, saw that. Videos like that are invaluable tbh as I’m sure youre aware. We’ve all had a ‘please make that just didn’t happen’ moments!
His was gear driven cams though so couldn’t use his timing tips but took what I could from his vids
No leaks apparent as yet but expecting a weep from the front cover gasket, it was a little past it’s best but gone back on with a bit of goo as they’re about 80 quid!

Glad it's sorted Roo. So the tight squeeze did create a little reassembly problem as you predicted. Do you think a vfr would be OK as a restoration project or it would just be a serial pita?
-
Yay! Glad it is all sorted and now you can resume the other projects! Will call for a chat soon...

They are so well put together they’d make a great resto project, nothing will be broken so minimal part buying involved. Plastics are a little rarer for the earlier ones but the bikes are brilliant and so usable whether you’re gaining it down the a roads or bumbling along a mountain road with someone and the luggage in the back.
Mine still needs loads of fettling but she’s come through it well and as mentioned, to neck only one bolt on a motor that’s not been apart for 20 odd years I’d quite something.
They’re so cheap to buy means you could have a concourse bike for not much money at the end of the build and not spend a fortune. Rio king on doing one next as a matter of fact, purely for that reason

Thanks all, super chuffed and pleased I took the leap of faith and did it myself. Full on head scratcher for me but worth the experience and won’t be afraid to tackle cam belts, chains ever again.
Started on the flipper bike this afternoon, fairings off, new ones on for a test fit, off again and in a big box ready to go to painters at some point this week..

Managed to finish the replacement mudguard for The Long Haired Generals 40, ‘Chewy’.
Apart from the clamp/boss from another member, all out of the scrap bit and modified. I cut 6” out of the mudguard, braised the holes up and a rattle can paint job. The clamp/ boss thing that the real name escapes me has been cut and re welded with 15mm less height to get the guard closer to the tyre. Fit it tmrw but a satisfying day in the shed and on the roads(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20231001/9725a4d692e6ceba11a3ab7feb7b2804.jpg)
