Hi Mick
Is there a rear mudguard and lamp from a 550 in there?

Tricks & Tips / Re: Cleaning tips

I use Safety Clean parts cleaning fluid in mine (a mate got me a couple of gallons years ago).

When you say “Safety Clean” what exactly do you mean?
The only stuff I can find is Safety Kleen.

Do you know of a reputable parts washer fluid that works well and doesn’t degrade or discolour alloy/aluminium components?

Cheers. Ian

I’m pleased that you are liking your VFR.
I love mine but like you I’m getting wrist ache and my exhaust headers are getting a little too rusty for my liking.
I would be interested to hear where you got your risers from and how you get on with fitting the aftermarket st/st exhaust headers.

Cheers.  Ian

Apologies for Hijacking your thread Ted.

Ash
The circuit appears to be a constant current control circuit irrespective of input voltage.

If I want to make this a variable current controller is it simply a matter of installing a potentiometer in the output side of the circuit as a variable resistor?
Cheers Ian

Is it possible to rig up some kind of cheap and cheerful digital current controller if using a 12v battery charger as the power source?
It would have to be simple for those of us with minimal elecrickery skills or knowledge. 🙂
The simple filament wire controller included with the kit is very hit and miss.

I use aquarium heaters in mine with insulated buckets to get the temperatures correct.
I have hade some great results with the basic kit bought through Classic Plating.

CB500/550 / First try at lacing a wheel
« on: August 31, 2020, 10:23:10 PM »
I’m finally getting around to putting a dual disc front brake on my 550F.
The one thing I have been waiting for is to replace the wheel rim.
I got a St/St rim and spokes set from Central Wheel Components, stripped the old wheel, cleaned up and sprayed the hub (baked in my home made oven, thanks to Ash) and plucked up the courage to tackle the re-lacing of the wheel.
It took 3 attempts to get the second set of spokes correct but after that was plain sailing.

3rd set of spokes going in

Completed wheel and bearings to fit

Just need to true it up now.

Have you tried 4-stroke.net?
They may have something useful.

Thanks Graham

I've seen another on ebay at £15 but assume this is again for UK and Europe.

There are a few on the US site that I assume are for the US market but, as usual, are ridiculously expensive especially when you factor in postage and tax.  :(

CB500/550 / 500K0 Handbook
« on: August 16, 2020, 10:32:40 AM »
Does anyone have a 500K0 owners handbook they would like to part with or know where I could find one?  I know it’s a big ask!

If not does anyone have a scanned copy to add into Aladdin’s Cave?

Thanks

CB500/550 / Mysterious writing under oil filter housing
« on: August 14, 2020, 08:08:04 AM »
I found this writing on the casing when I did the oil and filter change.
Does anyone know it’s significance?
I’m puzzled as to why it’s there. 🤭

Out & About / Re: Out and about 2020

After much fettling to get back to full roadworthy condition I had my first shake down run out (only 20 miles) after I finally got my DVLA documents.

Thanks to James for selling this to me.

Runs fine just had to rock it a bit to free off the clutch and there’s a bit of exhaust smoke but not bad for an 49year old engine that doesn’t look like it has ever had any of the engine covers removed.

Happy days

Hi Mtrhead

Yes I’m pretty sure he can do ally welding.
I remember him mentioning he was repairing an engine casing for someone when I picked up my BIL’s petrol tank.
