Great info Ash
Is this going into Aladdin’s Cave if it’s not already?

I never knew Bitsa but I think I would have liked to have met him.
He sounds like someone I may have been on the same wavelength with, at least on some subjects. 🙂

It’s nice to know that he is fondly remembered by the forum.

The US 500K0 Import (Pennsylvania) I got from James is not the same as this.  It only has a single lamp as does the Tachometer.  🤔

Great news Andrew. 👍

Pleased to hear that you are back on the road again.
+1 for taking it easy and not rushing into getting back on the bikes until you feel good and ready.

Personally I use Ethomix from Frost Restoration and I drain the fuel system before I lay my bike up for the winter. These additives only protect the metal parts so you also need to look for biofuel compatible rubber hoses too.

Interesting comments and I bow to both your and K2-K6’s knowledge and expertise.

I’ve ordered some Ethomix to give it a try. The description suggests that this is a good additive to combat the corrosive effects of Ethanol in fuel and it’s reassuring to know that it is endorsed by the FBHVC.
Do you know what biofuel compatible hose materials, apart from Viton, would be recommended and are readily available?

The attached article from the latest Honda Owners Club magazine suggests that "older engines run better on ethanol blended fuels".

However there are other the issues to consider regarding rotting of some rubbers and plastics as well as the corrosive nature on metals if any moisture is present in the fuel system.

The article relates to a book: Classic Engines, Modern Fuel - The Problems, The Solutions.  I was interested in getting a copy to help me get to sleep 😴 but it must be popular because it appears to be sold out in all the places I've looked.

Consensus wins
Having a look at the ignition switch harness, I think you’d call it hotwired.... Surprised it even ran like this!

I had exactly the same issue with my 500 ignition switch.
Nothing that a bit of soldering and heat shrink sleeve won’t cure.

+1 for prestige.
Quality is very good but, as stated in Paul G’s post, don’t expect a quick turn around.  The last time I collected some re-plated parts they were quoting a 6 month lead time.  I take this to mean that they are very busy due to their very good reputation for quality.

I had a GPZ550S for my daily 100mile round trip commute for nearly 5 years.
Nice little bike, comfortable, quick and nimble and also reliable.
Wish I hadn’t sold it when I got the VFR.

CB500/550 / Re: 500K0 Shift/clutch upgrade
« on: June 12, 2020, 11:05:27 AM »
Reading through Service Bulletin #4 (originally provided by BryanJ .. big thanks mate)... I spotted this in the pic. attached. Surely Honda wouldn't penny-pitch and tell you to re-use an 'O' ring. https://www.dropbox.com/sh/z8s0vpxu8niqva3/AAC1D8GaKGw_tvX0y2-CTcHaa?dl=0

It's interesting that the kit also contained a new --323-- clutch push rod......you know the ---323---one ..  it breaks into two pieces. Previously, as fitted on my own 500K0,  they used a CB450K1 onward ---292--- push-rod ('conventional' one piece steel part). I wonder what was wrong with the old style ---292--- push-rod and why that was changed and provided with the upgrade kit?

The original shift mechanism was obviously a carry-over design from the CB250/350K range as it's almost identical in design and uses parts common to the ---286-- engine.

Some background scary story here from the US about the gearbox/shift problem:-

http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,14675.msg1838670.html#msg1838670

This is the Kit for anyone who has never seen one: https://www.ebay.com/p/1522941856

Is this kit a recommended upgrade regardless of the current condition of a 500K0 clutch?
If so i will get one to upgrade mine as I proceed to get it back on the road.
Wish I had known earlier as I have just received an order I placed with CMS a couple of weeks ago. 🙈

EDIT.  I’ve just read the service bulletin and my engine is before 1018728 so does require the upgrade.  It doesn’t look like any of the engine cases or covers have ever been split/removed so doubt that this has been done.

CB500/550 / What you can find hiding beneath electrical tape.

The ignition switch had been moved from the frame to the handlebars by a previous owner

I wanted to replace it back to its original position and this is what I found once I removed all of the unsightly electrical tape.  Nice!!

Needless to say the wires were correctly soldered and heat shrink insulated and resheathed before refitting.

The photo isn't showing up very clearly but it looks like the quality of that welding is poor to say the least.
Let's hope that CMSNL agree to send a replacement.

Very useful comments gentlemen.

It looks like the Garmin is the way to go for ease of use, versatility and longevity.
Just need to find a decent unit at the right price.

Thank you
