Hi guys.
Tried to find a similar thread on this and forgive me for repeating a topic possibly. I've just taken delivery of my 750 K0 tank from Dream machines, now in it's final stage of restoration and I have to find a way of attaching the tank badges on the tank as the pins, as usual, have broken. What have you guys done to resolve the problem? I may well go down the line of gluing them on but NOT with a super glue type!! I may well have to get these badges off again and don't want to destroy the paint in the process! This also applies to the side panel badges which still have the original I am considering using Silicon (black), then to gently pick away the excess around the edges?
What are your experiences or thoughts? Cheers.

I would try some thin but hardish foam rubber backed with carpet adhesive tape. I sticks like sh*t to a blanket if you get decent stuff with the fibres running though it and the foam/adhesive tape shoud be just the right thickness to give no real gap between the emblem and the panel. You can get foam tape with adhesive but in my experince its not as tacky. Luckily my 'emblems' still have the mounting points intacts. BTW those K0 emblems are actually brass and re-chrome perfectly... All I need to find is someone who is prepared to sell a very small amount of Honda 'Sunny Gold' paint for the side emblems.

Double sided trim tape works well and it won't be a pig to remove in the future.
I'v got loads you can have some for free

Having gone to the expense of a respray why not fit new
-
Original badges and in excellent condition.. Replacing these with original would be expensive - particularly the side badges.
Thanks Mick and all. Will PM you this week when decision has been made. 😊

I've used low modulus clear silicone sealant before and had no problems.

Why not bond some aluminium flat head rivets to them and then use standard fixings. I have some special industrial epoxy and ally powder filler you can bond them with. Trust me the bond will be strong if you mix it and cure it properly. Agreed K0 emblem sets mega expensive, don't blame you for wanting to keep originals. I think I have some of the rivets but they are at work, I will check tomorrow if you are interested.

Many thanks Ash.
Never seen this technique used before but very interested. Can you let me know by PM or email? Thanks.

Found the rivets (loads of them) I will try it out on a badge and let you know. If it works I will PM you & send you a few and a bit of the epoxy concoction. :)

The rivets are perfect and got lots of 'em .. exactly the right length, aluminium and diameter (3mm) with a flat bottom. Mixed the epoxy with ali filler and left on the boiler to cure adding a 3rd mount to a K0 tank badge !! abraded surfaces first and played a creme brulee burner flame over it to let the epoxy flow out.
Off to the boozer now will report back tomorrow morning.
Got loads of the two-pack epoxy but short of the fine alloy powder so can only spare enough for you for your 4 badges (if it works of course)

Wow! Thanks Ash.😊

Attached results of the 'experiment'. Looks pretty good .. could do with more epoxy around the base of the rivet though. Please PM your address and I will send you a repair kit Nige. [attachimg=1]

OK ..I know you think I am crazy but I did some more evaluation. Please don't mock me it's just my nature to fanny about like this .. done it since I was a sprog!
1st I topped up the epoxy, cured overnight on the top of my boiler, then I hooked the pin up to a small chuck and linked to a load cell/data logger. In one test I applied 21 kG and the badge was creaking a bit so I backed off. I then recorded a test and at 16kg the chuck pulled off the rivet but the bonded rivet was still intact. So looks like result!

Ash,
Got to say that is sad but impressive ;D ;) I have some of that stuff and it is good.

:-). Ash, did you play opposite Michael J Fox in the 'Back to the Future' film series??? Don't ever apologise for being thorough - I always enjoy your posts mate.
So when are you going to release a Flux Capacitor for the CB750??? ;-)
-
Very impressive I can't see that coming of in a hurry

Fantastic Ash. Love this kind of 'tinkering'.
Not to throw a spanner etc, and one who's fallen foul of a (bloody careless) petrol spill on a beautifully painted tank, ... but is the epoxy ok in this respect?
Bit of a soak & then "Test #2"!

Need to come up with a gizmo to help me with wheelbuilding, as I will have 10 spoked wheels to do and never done it before!
The epoxy is petrol proof .

Looks like I am going to have to cut and grind the b*gger off now! Yamiya do the tank fixings, aftermarket, 'elcheapo' BTW
Ha Ha ! Was that a Delorean James? Once had one of these in the same colour as the image , what a POS that was !

Um..wheels... I kinda got this feeling you'll build some contraption, stick it in the airing cupboard with 10 rims + 380 spokes.... go to bed .... and thence come down to brekky with all miraculously done.

Hmm, would be like waking from a nightmare; 10 wheels each with 2 spokes missing:'(

Ahead of you on that one Hairygit... for once. Assumed Ash was building 1/2 & 1/2 of 400 / 750 wheels. (36 & 40 spokes)
Well.... that's my story...

Well I had to cut the rivet off and Dremel off the epoxy, otherwise I risked damaged to the tank badge (note the old yellowed epoxy on the back of the rechromed badge applied by a P.O. that the chromer couldn't be bothered to remove ( don't use them anymore).
Wheels debate:-
CB750K0 2 x 40 spoke wheels
CB250SS (K0) 2x 36 spoke wheels
CB350K1 2x36 spoke wheels
CB250/350K0 Cafe. 2x36 spoke wheels
400/4 need to sometime swap the Suzuki Takasago rims I used in '86 (Q.P.Motors Oddjob - remember!) with DID ones 2x36 spoke wheels.
So total is 368.

Since my 'troubles' a year or so back I find I only need about 5 hours sleep .. it's not that I am stressed or anything .. it's just that you have a million and one little 'projects' to do that went by the wayside when you were feeling shi*ty !
Amazingly I have a project at work, which involves some fairly complicated software that I was trying to get my head around, so after fannying around on bike stuff I decided to try to crack it when bug*er me I had casually joined a forum on line, last week and left details of my application/problems. Checked yesterday afternoon and someone on that forum has written all of the code for me to try out. The magic of forums 'eh. It's like I am the Shoemaker and some little elf has beavered away and sorted my problem out :D
Hope you are doing better yourself Pete? ..How's the 'thinning of the herd" going down ?

Your enthusiasm and your dedication does you credit Ash!
I've emailed you - looks as though it will do the job. This is could help a lot of guys with this common problem. I'm very grateful to you all for the support and advice. Thanks.

Incidentally,
Does anyone know of a suitable technique on how to gently (!!!) bend these badges at the forward end to fit more snug against the tank. The rest of the badge runs well along the tank but the forward end sits proud. The gap is around 3 mill and 2 mill respectively. I've noticed this is quite common on a lot of tanks. Cheers.

Can you send the email or PM again please Nige , can't seem to find it.
Also found some fine ceramic filler powder for that epoxy .. it cures so hard that you have to grind it to shape it...I fixed a glass tube in a pond heater thingy that had broken for someone at the last place I worked.

Hi guys,
I now need to replace my 2 tank trims at the base and wondered if any of you know of a cheaper source than £130 NOS in the States!!😳 preferably in the UK? Are my K0 trims only common to the '69 K0 guys? Silver and CMS don't supply these...
I've sent you a big thank by email regarding the double sided tape Mick! Bages are on!😉 thanks also to Ash for his amazing alternative! Brilliant!
Thanks guys and girls.

Glad they stuck it's pretty sticky stuff when warmed up.
I guess your after the trim without the black strip.

Many thanks Mick. God, this site is soooooo good and saves me soooooo much time with all your experiences and fab tips etc enabling me overcome this final unexpected hurdle! The painters have possibly lost 'em now...😞
Will await a phone call. But now have a contingency plan.. Firing her up for the first time since Oct rolling road work and balancing, tomorrow. (Although they'll be out balalance within a few hundred miles no doubt..!!) back on the road very soon.😊
Thanks,
Nige.

Ash, many thanks for all your support but all sorted now!😀 will bear your ingenious idea in mind for the future should any problems pop up.
Hope you had a good hol.

Trying to remain on the the theme of tank badges.
Does anyone know how I get to fit the the lower trims on the K0 tank? I have taken delivery of them from Germany, www.ac-motorrradeile.de and they just won't fits over the 4 'lugs' welded onto the base of the tank. They 'ping off'! The strip just isn't big enough and pliable enough to fit over them. Even when I force them over the lugs the trims are not flush with tank. These are the trims that have no black strip in them of course. How do I 'glue' them on? Do I soak these stops/trims in hot water? But how do they stay on? These are £35.00 new and I found a pair on eBay NOS for a K0 for £130.00!!!
Is ther a special technique for getting these trims on these tanks?
These were lost in the paint shop, hence the problem. This is the last piece of restoration! It's never over until the fat lady...!
Thanks guys for any help here...
Nige.

Thought they were supposed to just clip on with the welded on clips on the bottom of the tank. I just use mini (BL not modern) chrome trim cut down on one side .. as do a few ace restorers and sandcast gurus. Freddie used to sell the same but at a silly price.

Thanks.
Will try to soak them in hot water but still don't see they hold on? Pain... May have to have a chat with a well reputed local trim man...
Nige. Other ideas?
