No offence taken Ken and I appreciate all the advice being offered here. Whilst I have no knowledge of this engine ever being touched,  it may well be that the head gasket did leak oil on this early engine and there was a  warranty "fix" in the first 20k miles/10 years of its life. This may have included fitting this full set of copper washers (which are 2mm thick!). On balance though, I think I'll now anneal them as per Lynx's suggestion and buy a pair of the Dowty type for the pillared nuts and hope that nothing ever leaks again!
Thanks again for the advice.

Hi,
I don't wish to hijack this topic, but I recently found that ALL my cylinder head washers were copper and there were no steel "Dowty" washers under the pillared nuts. This was definitely as from new, as I'm the second owner and I've only removed and refitted the head once before about 20 odd years ago before laying up the bike.
Maybe this was the cause of the subsequent oil leak from the head gasket area after that last bit of work? This was so frustrating at the time that the bike was put aside until very recently...
If anyone has any thoughts on that, it'd much appreciated.
Thanks

Laurence
