We used to fit Cibie headlights to our 500 Fours in the seventies, together with TT100 tyres and Koni shocks.

CB750 / Re: dating certificate
« on: June 12, 2015, 09:25:11 AM »
I recently got a dating cert,

Honda were very helpful,it cost £30 inc VAT,

 send your request to

  Honda (UK)
 Cain Rd
 Bracknell
 Berks

RG12 1HL

 01344-888000

as you only have an engine number,it may be a no-go,

 give them a call first

When I wrote to Honda (with frame and and engine numbers plus a£30 cheque) they didn't want to know, and returned my money with the excuse that they didn't keep records going back that far (1974).

The Honda owners Club however, were very helpful and sent me a dating certificate for my bike together with 12 months membership of the club for £30 if I remember right - plus any further dating certificates required during the year.

The DVLC took this as proof of dating and registered the bike with a 1974 age related number.

Excellent bike for it's age - even better with the black and white plates.

Best to get some tank lining preparation ; don't know which one's the best but someone on the forum will know.

I used Phosphoric Acid to remove the internal rust on my CB550 tank and then after it was completely dry used POR-15 to seal it.

That was 6 months ago and no problems so far.

CB750 / Re: carburator float level again
« on: May 18, 2015, 07:46:05 PM »
I don't know about the 750, but on my '74 CB550 I measure (with the carbs at 45 degrees from uside down) from the flat of the main body of the float bowl to the top most part of the float and it runs OK.
I cut a piece of paper 21mm wide (for the CB550) and use that as a measuring template.

I find that the spokes come up a treat with a scouring pad.

I used 3 types on my CB550, red , green and grey, depending on how bad they are pitted.

It takes some time to do each individual spoke, but it's worth it in the end.

Bryan

Looks like you were right.

Just found this:

CB500/550 / CB500 4 into 2 upswept exhaust system anyone?
« on: May 02, 2015, 12:14:36 PM »
I have just bought an abandoned CB500 project which I am in the process of dismantling.
The rather nice upswept exhaust system (below) with new, unused silencers was fitted to the bike, but I don't recognise it as a CB500 part.
Can anyone advise please?

Does anyone know when Honda changed the clutch cable from the right hand side of the early CB500 engine to the left hand side please?

Don't accept that response Chris. Do what I did and make a stink over it, even if they can't identify your exact bike they should be able to get a really good idea of which month it was built by using frame numbers near yours. That's the point I made to them and they eventually just said a month but no exact date in that month. Best yet, I didn't pay as they'd already returned my cheque.

Honda Motors returned my £30 cheque too - but they neeedn't have insulted my intelligence by telling me that they were unable to identify the year of manufacture from the frame and engine number.

I would rather them just told me that they couldn't be arsed.

The seat has had more than 9,000 miles of use  ;D ;D

Agreed. I would expect a 9000 mile bike to look in better shape than that.
