CB500/550 / Re: I've been offered

If you could post a couple of pictures of the bike, we would be better placed to advise on price.

As mentioned above, the silencers were the Achilles heel on these bikes, which is a pity because they were part of the Honda Four concept back in the day.

I fitted pair of mag wheels on a new Honda CB500 that I bought back in '74, (when they were quite a rarity on road bikes) and really liked them, so if you do buy the bike and aren't keen on the mags, I, and possibly others might be interested in them.

The motad on my 550 does the same thing until it's warmed up. The leak appears to come from where the down pipes slide into the exhaust itself.

Yes, my CB550 does the same on starting up.

I always SORN it for the winter anyway.  I should have my Katana 650 on the road by then to use.

Mike

Why do you SORN through the winter?

If a bike is tax exempt, it should make no difference should it?

Or am I missing something.

You apply, change your tax class to historic on your v5, fill in tax renewal form (v50)? Send with a print of insurance cert and your mot.

My bike has come into the 'tax exempt' bracket this year, but the Post Office wanted £38 on two occassions, even though I explained the situation to them.

I eventually had to phone the DVLA who told me - if the PO refused to tax for free again, I was to tell them to ring the Post Office help line at the DVLA.

The next time, the PO made the call and taxed my bike (for free).

They keep one half of the V5 (to be updated as historic and returned to you later).

I think I know the type you mean.
With a megaphone stuck on the end of each one, you could potentially have a good result.

I know what you mean Mick, but original pipes are difficult if not impossible to get.

Even an aftermarket set would cost close to a grand.

If I can get another CB500 to recommission, I'll be somehow trying to get 4 exhausts fitted, but I won't be paying silly money for them - I'll try to make them up on a budget.

At least the ones that are fitted now are much more solid metal than the original silencers.

Nice 500 Mr Wilkes

I like to think that I'll find one as good as that one day.

Meanwhile I have just recommissioned and registered (it took 10 days) a CB550 from the States.

See my thread here...

Fingers crossed - I reckon you'll have a V5 in your hand by the end of next week all being well...

Good guess. I got my V5 yesterday (Saturday) so it took 10 days.

Lesson learned - if you want to register a bike to start from the begining of the next month, send in the application about 6 days before the 1st of the next month, otherwise you'll get your application back and have to re-apply, and at £14 return Special Delivery post, it will cost you £28 to apply twice, plus the registration fee of £55.

I went to Albania in 1995, just after they came out of communism and found these classics lying around....

Where's My Old Bike? / Re: Honda CB500 Four XWK816M still around?
« on: April 03, 2015, 08:04:32 PM »
Yes it was metalflake red when I bought it - a special paint job by Albany Motorcycles in Coventry.

I eventually bought a big tank for it and spare side panels and painted them Honda red with yellow Honda logos on the side of the tank.

With mag alloy wheels (first of the few in the day), quarter fairing (red) Girling shocks, TT100 tyres, finned engine casings and four into two matt black exhaust system with Dunstall Decibel megaphone silencers, it looked and sounded awesome - a bit like an MV firing up in the midst of the 70s sea of two strokes in the car park on race days.

I still wish I had never sold it.

I bought this bike new in 1974.
I did many mods on it but had to sell it to fund a house purchase at the time.
It would be nice to find out if is still around and what condition it is in.

My CB550 float valves arrived from Germany this morning and are now fitted.
When I fired it up it sounded great with the American 4 into 2 exhausts sounding off in stereo unison.
I've hit the sweet spot!
It just shows how weak springs in the needle pushrods can make such a difference.
Will now put the rest back together and post a picture when I've finished.
