Not sure what I get out of mine but definitely get well over 80, nearer the 100 I expect. This is on a CB550 but with a CB500 tank fitted.

My advice for what it's worth is don't fettle the engine until you have done at least 500 miles. Then all the usual, oil and filter change, adjust tappets, vacuum sync carbs and strobe timing. The front brake sounds almost normal to me. A disc skim may help if not already done.

Nope, that is most definitely not the best one in the UK........a very, very long way off.

They are both as bad as each other with glaring errors in both. But, they are both OK as a general guide, sort of, just don't take what they say as gospel.

Beautiful James. I always think a newly refurbed set of carbs are worthy of a place in a display cabinet, better than any ornament.

Absolutely anywhere that rubber meets metal or anywhere there is an opening with something in it that isn't fitting tight enough :)

I could be wrong but I think the ES is just the new version of the EA (someone will tell me if i'm wrong i'm sure !!!). I was just making sure you were not using plugs with R in the title which means resisted, with resisted plug caps as that combination gives the symptoms you are describing with the fluctuating revs. I know this as I fitted the resisted plugs in error one time and had all sorts of problems !!!. As Roy said earlier, whip the plugs out after a run to get a general idea of if she is running lean or rich, my guess would be lean which is no good at all and running long term like this can cause serious damage to the engine(see my engine rebuild thread  :'( :'( :'().

A clue here might be the dial face screws, early gauges had screws with a smaller head than later ones. Presumably because the face had a tendency to work loose. It looks like the speedometer has the screws with the larger head and as this is an early machine it might be that the gauge has been replaced.  Just a thought!
I noticed that too Peter as I was just comparing the photos of the faces with the photos I put on.

So no air leaks that you have found ?. I run standard points on mine and have no experience whatsoever on BB electronic ignition, so I cannot comment on that side of things. It may be a bit of dirt in the idle circuit. Are the revs holding constant at idle or do they go up and down on their own ?. Do the revs come straight back down when you throttle off or 'hang' and then come down?

actually, the whole mental visualization thing seemed a bit daft to me until i was practically forced by my line manager to go and sign up for some CBT. after talking to my shrink for a while, the image that works for me is the ball floating in the sea. if you try to mentally force it underwater, it keeps popping up again, so i have to imagine swimming away from it (while crying "Wilson, Wilson" in a castaway style). it's amazing how complex the mind is, and how simply imagining something can change your thought pattern to a certain extent.

i can imagine the rest of you normal guys out there thinking  "what are these nutters talking about??"
None of us are 'Normal' Pete, it is an impossibility for anything as complex as the human mind to be normal. 'Normal' is a label invented by lots of brainy people with 'ologist' or 'iatrist' at the end of their job title. Even they can't agree what 'Normal' is. Anyway, I'm pleased you and Wilson are working well together  ;D ;D
