CB500/550 / Rear wheel bearing removal
« on: April 08, 2018, 10:10:59 AM »
Hi, I’m busy renewing the rear drive rubbers and thought change the bearings whilst I’m in there.

Looking at the bearing dimensions. The rh one is 52mm od and the lh side is 62mm. The left hand side has the bearing retainer, so I guess everything, including spacer, will just push out, right to left? By push I mean drive.

Any tips gratefully received.

CB500/550 / Needle clip
« on: March 14, 2018, 02:09:20 PM »
Lost one of the little clips that positions the needle in the carburettor. Sprung off when I was refitting it and now seems to have vaporised. I’ve got an assortment box of E clips but 1.6mm is too small and 3.2mm is too big.
I wouldn’t care, I endured the wife’s wrath to do the job on the kitchen bench rather than in the garage, just in case I dropped anything.
Anybody got any ideas what I can use instead or where I can get the correct clip?

CB500/550 / Tool tray air filter intake mesh
« on: February 11, 2018, 02:01:14 PM »
My bike was missing the mesh that goes on the tool tray air filter inlet and I couldn’t find one anywhere.
I had this made up on a 3D printer and it fits like a glove. Well pleased.

CB500/550 / Brake lever rubber tip
« on: December 13, 2017, 11:46:08 AM »
Anybody got any tips for fitting the little rubber cover that goes on the end of the brake or clutch lever?

I’ve had it in a cup of boiled water, tried stretching it apart with a pair of needle nosed pliers whilst trying to ease it over the end of the lever, but failing miserably.

CB500/550 / Headlight change
« on: December 07, 2017, 08:34:45 PM »
I want to upgrade the headlight on my bike. Is the one on David Silver Spares, that comes complete with an H4 halogen bulb, any good, or is there better alternatives?

CB500/550 / Pattern exhaust system
« on: October 09, 2017, 09:26:12 PM »
Anybody bought a four into four pattern exhaust from DS or CSM? Are they worth it?

Failing that, is it feasible to get my original ones rechromed?

CB500/550 / Misfires above 4,500
« on: September 24, 2017, 10:48:22 PM »
Stumped again.

Engine still ticks over nice and rides nice at low revs but doesn't pull above 4500 rpm. Number 3 plug was sooty, so I put the original carbs back on, hard to say if better or not, but plug 3 still sooting  up. So unlikely the same fault is with both sets of carbs.

Checked Boyer Branson electronic ignition advance is ok, I.e. Full advance at 4,500 rpm.

There's a new set of D7 plugs in, gapped correctly. Valve timing is correct and valve clearances are correct.

Now looking at electrics again. Confirmed plug cap resistance is correct and have also exchanged cap 3 and 2 for each other. If number 2 plug soots up then it's the plug cap at fault. Will check tomorrow. Also going to check all electronic ignition wiring tomorrow, coils and ht leads.

Edit: Corrected cylinder numbers - sorry, Chris

CB500/550 / Frame and Engine numbers
« on: August 06, 2017, 12:32:34 PM »
I see people refer to their bikes with a comment, "matching frame and engine numbers". I realise this is in reference to the bike's originality, but what does it mean?

For example, my bike frame number is different to the engine's. They are both CB500(E)210xxxx but the last four digits are over a thousand different. Does this mean that the engine is not the one it left the factory with?

Got the cylinder head off at present to overhaul it. Does anybody know the torque setting for cylinder head studs?

Hi, I'm looking for the push throttle cable, pn 17920323000, for a 1973 500/4 K2, US spec.

Silvers don't do these, they do the pull cable, but not the push.

Thanks

Chris
