CB500/550 / Re: Air box tool tray
« on: May 10, 2020, 05:42:21 PM »
Got my self a Honda CB500 -74 a couple of months back. The previous owner had started to renovate it with a lot of new stuff including a fully restored engine. Problem is that a lot of parts was still missing when i got it, looking back i would say half the bike was gone. No seat, fenders, foot pegs, front or rear, no handlebar or swing arm etc etc and a ton of itty bitty stuff one never think about. The list is getting long thats for sure but i finally got hold of most of it but still missing the air box tool tray and (if reasonably prized) a central stand.

If anyone has something laying around and doesn't mind shipping to Sweden it would be much appreciated. Im wiling to pay a fair price in advance.

Regards Magnus.

Hi Magnus

I’ve got one of those available if you’re still interested.

PM me and we can discuss

Chris

Finally bit the bullet and ran the tank until the low fuel light came on. This happened at 178 miles.

Wow, bloody near

Ha ha, yes, hadn’t seen that. Means our fuel consumptions are almost identical.

Just filled up the Divvy, the gauge had indicated empty for some time and the light had come on half a mile from the fuel station, £22.59 for 17.80 litres at £1.269 per litre. (receipt in my hand)

Before now I have run with the light on for a good distance looking for fuel and never got near 24 litres

FYI...  I did 179 miles on this tank full before the fuel light lit again.

Hows the new pump?

So far so good. I haven’t had the guts to run the tank any lower yet as I don’t want to run out during my daily commute again. But the pump is working without any negative effects at the moment.

Finally bit the bullet and ran the tank until the low fuel light came on. This happened at 178 miles. I’m averaging 9.2 miles to the litre, so once the low level fuel light is on, I’ve got about 3.5 litres left in the tank, which would give about another 30 miles. I’m happy with that range.

Thanks both.
Julie, I just measured the chain and it looks pretty wide at 25mm. The link plates have a gap between which I guess may be the seals or washers.
It looks fatter than my chain back in the day, which I used to put in a wax/oil bath on the cooker. I'm only doing very low mileage.
If the standard chain (DSS one looks better and is only £19) is narrower, I guess the sideways play of the sprocket could be viewed as normal and/or would not matter. In general parts don't look unduly worn.

I know your question is different to this, but I had an issue with my chain colliding with the clutch crank arm. I’ve posted the link to the thread about chain widths

I have been looking for one of these for a while, part number 83502323000 but without any luck so though I'd make one.

Didn't have any dimensions so worked them out from the air box lid and designed the cover on a 3D cad package.
Sent the image to a 3D printing company and got this back today. Fitted a piece of stainless mesh into it and hey presto:

I had the same idea, posted it here.

I went the whole hog and had the mesh 3D printed as well.

Well I bit the bullet this morning and fitted the Facet Posi flo pump. I removed the existing inline fuel filter and fitted the Facet pump complete with its own inline filter. Now on test.
Thank you all for your input.

Hi, very interesting. I did the point repair a few months ago, the pump is working but it’s not emptying the tank, so I have reduced range.

I’ve already got a Facet Posi-Flow pump, 60104, that one of your useful articles refers to, so I’m going to fit that this morning. I’ll do a temporary trial fit, then if successful, fabricate a suitable bracket.

Due to the facets inlet and outlet being on opposite ends, it will be awkward to fit in place of the original pump, which has in and out on the same end. I think the best place for the new pump will be under the tank where the inline filter is. This should give me a much simpler fuel line run.

Thanks again to everyone for their input, much appreciated.

They’re sales bumph says they’re designed to run constantly, so that shouldn’t be an issue for the pump. It’s the constant pressure on the float valves that concerns me but since asking on here, I’ve read an article on a Yamaha forum, where somebody is recommending a facet pump for a 600 Diversion, so on that basis I’m going to go ahead and fit one. Suck it and see.

I’ll let you know how I get on.

This August 1969 'H' registration CB250SS (K0) was at Newark Autojumble yesterday. Totally original as far as I could tell (Apart from reflector on rear mudguard/fender)... Just under 10k Miles on speedo. Seller was asking £2,000. Said it came from someones estate I think. I suppose if you were to just to get it running and tidy up to use then that might be a fair price but the photo's do flatter the condition somewhat so to totally restore it may make it a bit of a money pit. Pipes were pretty solid though and a rare sight at an autojumble in the UK. :) Last taxed in July 1985 according to DVLA ... Just noticed gearchange lever is not correct :)

I wasn't interested .. already have 3 ... don't need another one or any other bike for that matter  ;D ;D

(Attachment Link)

My brother had an F reg one, blue, back in the early seventies. Plagued with gearbox troubles. Fast though for a 250.
I had a 250 G5 in 76, nowhere near as quick.

Than you all for your responses so far.

Yesterday I filled the tank and rode home the mile and half from the garage. I drained the full tank into a clean container and got 22.8 litres. I removed the tank and dismantled the sender unit and the fuel tap. This allowed me to about another 0.5 litre of fuel out. So, tank had about 23 litres in.

I could see nothing that would interfere with the flow of fuel out of the tank and confirmed the breather was clear.

A new Division fuel pump is £500 so I was thinking of fitting one of these :

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Facet-Posi-Flow-Electronic-8mm-Union-Fuel-Pump-Kit-20-Gallon-Hour-1-5-4-0-Psi/361079202256?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

My only concern is that this style of pump continues to run even when the bowls are full so would be maintaining pressure against the closed float valves. There is a non return valve inbuilt to the pump, so when the pump is off, the tank couldn’t drain back through the carbs if one of the float valves was passing.

Anybody used one of these pumps and have any experiences, good or bad?
