Title: Fuel flow from petrol tank
Post by: watty51 on May 07, 2019, 08:31:26 PM
Is there a specified flow rate for fuel leaving the fuel tank.

Basically I have held a old float bowl under a fuel hose coming from the petrol tank petcock and it took over 2 minutes to fill to the correct level.

More of a dribble on both the on position and reserve, and with the cap open and shut, makes no difference

Seems a bit slow to me but as I have no reference to go by I was hoping someone could help.

Many thanks the bike is a Cb350f

Sounds much too slow, I don’t have an exact figure. There is a circular brass filter screen inside the tap, sounds like that might need a good clean.  You need to undo the bottom bowl of the tap to remove it.  Easier with the tank off the bike and on its side on a cushion. There is an o ring above the bowl.  Might be worth removing and cleaning the tap.  It’s held on with two screws one outside and t’other one above the screen.  Another shaped o ring between tap and tank.

Recheck the flow with the filler cap open to eliminate a blockage in the fillercapvent.  It's most likely to be the fuel filter, blocked up with rust.

As above. The screens can get totally smothered with crap from the tank. Having drained my CB400/4 tank in the past via the petcock I  would say a float bowl should fill within about 2-3 seconds.

Blimey 2 to 3 seconds I’ll def give the whole petcock a good clean out.
I’ve tried checking with the fuel tank cap open and closed, made no difference at all to the flow rate.

Is there a quick way of getting the fuel out of the tank rather than using the petcock. At the rate it’s flowing I’ll be waiting a week

If you have a container with a really big opening, like a bucket, you can pour it out of the filler cap. Definitely sounds like a good clean / overhaul of the petcock will work wonders.
