Title: f2 colours
Post by: rosco on May 15, 2019, 06:46:07 PM
Hi Im sure i will be put right   My 1978 f2 400/4 is in Light Ruby Red    Is this the correct colour for this model   as i have only seen f2 in
Candy Antares Red or Parakeet Yellow with tank stripes  Has there been a crossover between these models  Thanks

Only Candy Antares and Parakeet Yellow are F2 colors. Light Ruby Red is an early model colour along with Varnish Blue. No cross over of colors from the F's to the F2's.

Yes Ross, if yours is an F2 it should be Candy Antares Red. No problem with the log book. Is yours an original UK bike or an import? Not that that makes any difference to the color. Is it definitely an F2?. What is the year of manufacturer?

Hi Julie  Yes a UK bike  First registered 07/06/1978  Do not know date of manufacture  Frame No is CB400F2-1088193

Well yours is only about 900 off the production line later than mine 😀. Production finished in late 1977 anyway , so both yours and mine are late 1977 manufactured. Mine is a August 78 reg on a T and a UK bike like yours.

Hello, what other than the 78 reg makes you think the the bike should be other than the red? I think a lot of bikes sat around in boxes waiting to be sold. All of the candy and yellow new bikes I seen in shops had a speedo with mph and a green inner kph gauge fitted. I have 77  S plate in blue came with only a mph speedo....cheers Dave

Hi Dave My question was My bike is ruby red As a f2 model should it be Antares Red As the f2 I've seen seem to be either Antares Red or Parakeet Yellow  My speedo also only in MPH Is yours a f2 if so it blows my theory out of the water Although Nurse Julie seems to agree Mine should be Antares   Ross

The problem with 40+ year old bikes are things get damaged/ broken/ wear out. Unless they could afford new spares many people would buy secondhand from breakers etc. So an F1 Speedo and tank is not any big surprise it they have got damaged/Rusted out etc

Interesting. I have never, ever seen an original UK CB400/4 with anything other than MPH and KMH clocks fitted. I have seen USA imports with only MPH clocks fitted though. I can't recall seeing a Varnish blue S reg in the UK either. Maybe i just haven't noticed though 🤔

Hello Ross, unless you know the person who originally bought the bike you will never be 100% sure of the original colour. I would say given you have a mph speedo red is original. I may be wrong on the speedo but I’m sure I’m not  8).......cheers  Dave

Ross, if your VIN number is CB400F2******* , which you have already said, it is definitely an F2 which the red is Candy Antares.

My Blue bike now has a Speedo face of a yellow bike that came Canada. I always liked the idea of having both after a trip to the south of France with only mph....cheers Dave

When I bought my 78 400 it was Varnish Blue which I thought was incorrect. I contacted Honda using their contact form:

https://www.honda.co.uk/motorcycles/contact-us.html

After a few days I has an email reply:

Dear Mr. Dean,
Thank you for your patience.
The colour code for the bike is: R-6CS
Thank you for contacting Honda UK. If you need any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us back.

Kind Regards,
Yuliy  Antov
Honda Customer Service

Confirming that it should be Candy Antares Red not blue.

I'm not sure if you can be certain unless you contact Honda.
I contacted them as my varnish blue bike came with a Parakeet Yellow side panel, so I originally thought they would come back and say yellow.

Good luck with Andrew Parnaby I rang and spoke to him four times and he didn't give me a price or if he could do it.
Paint work went to Dream Machine pick it up next week.

Ross, I have used Menno Dek (tanklackieren) twice now and his work is superb. Other members have also used him with great results.
Ask Piki (also a member on here under the name of Redice, decals and stickers) to make your various decals and he will send directly to Menno. Menno also clear coats over the decals to give a perfect finish. He also chemically cleans out the tank so it's like new.
Good luck.
Dave

Hi Ross, the tank was done by Menno, as you say it looks the dogs ***. As Laverda120 says, Piki supplies perfect decals, he has made some for me from scratch and they were spot on.

Just had my CB500 tank and panels back from Menno and the guy is an absolute star. Very helpful and does an absolutely superb job. As good (if not better) than it was in the shop 40 odd years ago. Perfect job and excellent service.

Don’t forget to source the correct speedo face/speedo the small details count, not that I’m a washer and nut counter :) I’ve updated my 77 blue bike with a few parts from older and newer 400/4’s including the F2 single stay front mudguard and cast wheels from the 398cc Japanese spec race bike Honda produced to bump up sales.....cheers Dave

I'm still using Maybelline Superstay 7 in Cranberry Crush. Had it years, probably not even made now 😀😁
