Misc / Open / Strange things people carry on bikes
« on: June 10, 2020, 11:03:07 AM »
Anyone else seen odd things people carry on bikes. Last year saw a Dachshund sticking out the back of a rucksack being carried by a lady on a scooter in London.

Probably the most dangerous was a guy on a bike with the metal part of a shovel in his rucksack so the entire handle was sticking out way above his head. Kept wondering what if the handle caught on a tree branch. Also another guy with a wood saw, again in a rucksack sticking out with the blade pointing at his neck.

Are you sure that it’s not catching on your boots?

Mine does.

You sir are a genius. Today is the first time I’ve taken my bike out with my new bike boots on. Usually I wear my shorter boots.

I feel a right idiot now  :P

CB500/550 / Choke lever moving on its own
« on: June 08, 2020, 04:53:24 PM »
My 1974 K0 550 has just started playing up today, the choke lever is managing to turn on its own.

It keeps rotating back and the choke ends up back on. The choke lever still makes the little click when’s it’s rotated back to its off position.

Is there a way of tightening it back up?

Standard 022 carbs.

Mine is a 550 K0 and the green earth wire is earthed to the left hand side bolt that holds the coil to the frame.

Misc / Open / Re: Why do we pay for insurance.

Insurance companies want it to go 50/50. That way both sides lose their no claims and have a history of an accident against them.
Next renewal time both parties pay increased premiums, therefore more money for the insurance companies.

I was told that many years ago by an Insurance broker.

On the subject of electronic ignition, I got mine from David Silvers. Have done over a 1000 miles on it and its never missed a beat.

Check your main battery ground, it looks like you have the same problem as I had with my 74 550.

In your pic, see below. It looks like the green earth wire has overheated and melted. This happened in multiple places in my loom. Its caused by a poor battery ground connection, so a lot of current is using the only other path it can, the small green earth wire.

The second pic below is my loom, this is what to look out for:

Isn’t the fuel tap on the wrong side?

Misc / Open / Tank rust removal
« on: May 10, 2020, 04:09:28 PM »
This is on my RD350LC, the tank is in a very bad state so I thought I’d try the Electrolysis method.

Some bright spark has filled the tank with liner in the past that over the years has broken up into hundreds of parts. I removed the fuel tap and blanked the hole off, then spent hours hosing out the tank with water and probably got about 90% of the liner out.

Filled the tank to the brim with water and a 3/4 of a small pot of baking soda, battery charger negative to the tank and an old cleanish Allen key in the water connected to positive.

It’s bubbling away at the moment and a hell of a lot of rust is coming out, either bubbling to the top or sticking to the Allen key which I clean every hour or so.

Only thing to be careful of is that hydrogen gas is produced so must be done outside and to keep the tank topped up with water and agitate tank now and then.

I’ve got a bog standard Yuasa on the 550, has been fine for 2 years and still going strong.

I have a Motobatt on my Fireblade, it’s good as long as you have it on a trickle charger. Once Motobatts go flat they seem to struggle to recover, have had to send two back for replacement under warranty.

Just a word of warning, I think Cadmium is very highly toxic and plating with it is now banned.

Could be dangerous if you try to remove it.

This is how I fixed mine, following Ash's guide with a slight difference.
