Title: Tacho restoration

Hi All

I'm in the process of restoring the tacho on my 400 - I've managed to undo the crimped ring, but am struggling to dismantle it further due to the trip reset knob preventing me from removing the mechanism.  Is there a trick/technique to remove this?

Funny old tacho with trip knob! Oh must mean the speedo, two ways you can cut the knob along the length with a tiny saw blade and rotary tool. Then spread it a little and pull it off. The knob is pressed on the splines of the trip shaft. You can also lift the body and and remove a 'C' clip that holds the trip shaft in the mechanism frame. With a bit of a fiddle you can remove the frame leaving the trip counter drum and shaft in the body. Once the frame is removed the knob will pass though the hole in the body and can it can be removed.

Hi,

The trip reset knob unscrews, I restored both the tacho and speedo with new glass and dial faces, fitted a grommet to the reset knob as mine did not have one fitted.

Hold the inside of the shaft and unscrew I am fairly certain that it was a left hand thread and is loctited on.

Yes the trip shaft is held to counter drum shaft on a left-hand thread, you may need to heat the trip shaft with a gas lighter to melt the thread lock and sometimes the two shafts unscrew easily after warming. May take several attempts, great care is required.
