ok peeps i just rebuilt my top end i had an oil leek from some where so i just started it up it ran soon as fuel got into the carbs i rev it and there was 1 small pop from the engine then i noticed oil all over the floor i noticed the oil filter was loose but i never touched it on the rebuild at all the thread on the bolt is stripped so could the pop i heard been the bolt popping out is if could there be anything i,ve done on the rebuild to corse it to happen

Has the engine been out of the frame with the oil filter housing sitting on the floor?. Has the thread stripped from inside the case as well as the bolt?

Ouch that sounds bad hope the thread in the engine case is okay and it's just the bolt that's been hydraulically expelled.

not been on the floor and yes thread gone on bolt and case not a happy chap i spent 8k building this bike with all new genuine parts that took 10 years to find now i,m trying to find some engine cases with the same letters on the bottom case so i dont have to work out and find some new shells again

Oh dear, what a bummer. I must ask though, did you do a complete 100% engine overhaul without removing the oil filer and housing?. If it were me, I would want to know what has happened within the engine to make the filter bolt and the case threads give way like that.

I would be thinking about asking at a good engineering shop for options to weld up and rethread, weld in a made up insert or the possibility of a helicoil, the odds of getting a set of cases with the same bearing letters will be in line with winning the lottery

Just reading this makes me anxious about the unknown happening. As others have said fix what you have if possible Trigger will no doubt have experience of such disasters and a way forwards.

I thought more in this direction but with a bespoke spigot to fit a retapped case to effect a repair.

Cars routinely use a spacer plate for oil cooler take off with a screw in spigot that can effectively be "lost" in regard to spacing to fit an oil cooler feed into system too. The design principle is the interesting part as they're not size compatible.
There where also the same oil cooler kits made for these engine types when contemporary too.
You'd effectively need a bespoke sized spigot made to match an enlarged thread tapping in the case.

Certainly if you can get a competent enlarged thread cut with a spigot to adapt, then it would give you a good engineering solution to it.
The threads are only that bore size to flow oil through the bolt centre and not required to take much load in a conventional sense. Obviously to sucure the oil filter is a prerequisite but it would ordinarily be easier than the weld and remachine route.

all sorted tapped the filter in engine put new bolt in all seems ok no leaks when it was running so i,ll change oil and filter at week end and check again ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
