just purchased a red CB200, 77 plate ,21K miles ,a little scruffy, but quite nice ,more details and pics soon
-
I had one of those John back in 1980. It had been painted black with a nose fairing so at least it looked fast! The guy who owned it was actually an undertaker so maybe he had a job lot of black paint! It was a nice bike apart from the front cable operated disc brake. I was slowing down one day in heavy traffic when it locked on (I think the release ratchet broke in the caliper). It sent me over the handlebars!
I used to like the green metallic ones.
-
We had a green one, we re-sprayed it blue. Come to that I had my 500, candy garnet brown and re-sprayed that blue. Liked the CB175s, but never took to the 200. The cam seized and never really found out why. Looked spotless inside engine.
Don't like blue bikes now. ???
-
I had a green one when I was 17 , the clutch slipped, it was before I had any mechanical knowledge, or money, so I rode it for a year with a slipping clutch 🙂, I was talking to someone a couple of weeks ago he’d got a nicely restored red one, he said he was sure the one he had in the 70’s was twice as fast! 😄, what do they do 70mph ?
EDIT
80+ evidently, just found this , scroll down past the spec to find a really good article from cycle magazine 1974.
http://www.motorcyclespecs.co.za/model/Honda/honda_cb200.htm
-
Like the bit about "if fuel ever goes over a buck a gallon".....
Good article telling lots about the basic motor development from 125 etc.
-
it arrived,a bit more rust than I thought, but seems quite solid
one item I do need ,,r/h side panel badge ,then silencers .battery and more and more !!!!!!!
-
Nice one John, something to keep you busy.
Peter
-
Looks good John, nice starting point. It will look great when you have worked your restorers magic :)
-
Interesting winter project there John. Keep the photos coming and maybe start a fantastic detailed restoration thread as Julie did.
-
just been looking around, and for some reason the PO dismantled the seat lock plunger ,
the one that is rubber mounted on the seat and pushes down into the lock, and the 2 rubber bushes and metal tubular spacers are missing
part mumbers 772 283 40000 bushes
772 293 40000 metal spacers
both 2 off ,
obviously I can get them from CMS nl ,but if anyone has a couple spare, please let me know https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb200-england_model16413/partslist/F05.html#.WzzbgdJKjIV
items 38-39
thanks
-
OK,started ordering parts ,carb sets from Cruzimage, petrol cap catch,
needs battery,rear brake shoes ,
fair amount of rust on rims and spokes, also mud gaurds ,can these be re-claimed ? or should I just bin and replace ??
check the pic
-
Looks to be a sweet 200, have seen very good mudguards on ebay some time ago. I think DK broke some they shipped from the states.
-
Nice little collection starting there John.
I think for wheels probably more economic to replace wheels and spokes for new rather than re-chrome.
Mudguards harder to source so re-chrome.
Just my opinion.
Peter
-
nice sunny day,so pottering around before over to Glos for the Biker nite beano.
here are a few more pics ,
I have decoded to go with stainless spokes and rims ,new rear shockers ,but re-chroming the mudguards ,,I live between Bristol and Birmingham,so who would you suggest for the chrome ?
BTW,my bike collection is in CMM this month
-
Like the 200/2 John. After years of fettling Hondas it be more familiar to you than the Yam.

any idea of a source ??
-
Trig has a huge stock of everything rubber John, including O rings. When he's out of the workshop, i will ask him.
Edit....it looks like i managed to find them myself 👍👍👍 [attachimg=1]

quick mention of the help I had from Tri and Nursie ,,
the 27 x 2.5 mm O rings fitter perfectly.
but,my Cruzimage carb kits ,the bowl joint seal is not very good, one touch of petrol, and it swells and becomes oversize so it doesn't fit.
guessing its ethanol ,
will have to reuse the old ones

The Cruzinimage kits are good John but we always upgrade all the O rings to Viton. This stops the problems you are encountering.

It's not an O ring. But a flat shaped gasket type rubber seal

-
They look pretty much like the one or lass had years ago.
-

What's a ball park figure £s for the chroming John.

You're going great guns on this build John.

What's a ball park figure £s for the chroming John.
just had the quote,
mudguards are rusty and need preparation work,
initial quote ,£330 + VAT per guard
approx 10 week lead time
-
Does that not sound like a lot of money per guard?
-
Does that not sound like a lot of money per guard?
yup, thats per guard + VAT etc
-
The word patina may hold a whole new attraction. :) As I am totally undecided which way to go with, the 350f as it is better than i expected.
-
Patina is a lovely thing, in my opinion.
-
£330 + VAT sounds over the top per guard to me. I'll ask the fella I have used in the past what he would charge. When I was there last week I saw some of their work and it was 'top notch', I'll be seeing him early next week and I'll ask what he would charge. I know he likes a bit of the 'folding stuff' so that might reduce the cost.

This may seem stupid but polish the chrome with tin foil, i didnt believe it either but it works wonders on spotty chrome.

Tin foil and coca cola seems to be a marvelous combination for smartening up old chrome.....so I have heard :-\

I find fine grade wire wool very effective if its not pitted and doesn't appear to damage the finish.

-
£330 + VAT for EACH Mudguard.....FFS........they must be from that old school of thought that just because something is 40 years old they think they can charge twice the price of a new part.
I think that I'd keep looking !
-
Forks back in,just about to mount the DSS mudguard ,
over hauled the Caliper, first time for me,the cable mech is clever, hope I re built it correctly,

It doesn't really matter what you do or how you do it.
It still won't stop.

Gradually coming together.
Next major issue is replacing brake pedal.
Need to loosen pivot shaft.

Stand and rear brake pedal shaft came out easily. Lots of WD40 etc. So spending money like water.i decided I needed new chain and sprocket.
Do you think this would have lasted?

Reminds me of my collage days - couldn't afford to do bikes maintenance as well as I wanted, especially given M&p would sit on your order 8 weeks before sending. My gs125 chain and sprockets went like that, they seem to reach a critical point where wear rate triples.

Looking really good John.
My friend had one years ago. He had tried inexpertly to service his bike and, on his way to see his girlfriend, called in to see me saying it wasn't going quite as well as it had before. Upon inspection, it became evident there was no compression in the right cylinder. We set to work straight away, literally burning our hands taking out the engine. Quickly, we discovered he had advanced the ignition so much the piston had holed. After a quick trip to the local Honda dealer, he came back with a new piston and set of rings etc. and within a very short space of time I reassembled the engine, set the timing correctly, and by the time we put the engine back in the frame it was still warm and he was able to resume his journey.
-
And there was I thinking I might have a go at servicing my bike. If it’s that easy to mess it up, think I might get somebody who knows what they’re doing when the time comes. :)

the ignition is easy to set, only one set of points for both pots,
a little messy as the LH side plate is ope to engine oil,
just set the spark at the T mark, and its done
-
Shouldn't be engine oil in there, there should be an oil seal in the cam carrier bearing.

Yes Hairy but you have to remove the generator cover fot the marks and there is oil in there!
-
I think static timing is perfectly fine for these, my friend had done something weird, he probably didn't realise there were timing marks, he was not very mechanically minded.
