Misc / Open / cost of speedo calibration.
« on: March 15, 2024, 04:09:08 AM »
So I need to get one of the speedo's recalibrated.  Its showing 85mph+ at 70.  I have put up with it for years but have decided to get it sorted.

Just wondering what is a good price for such a bit of work.  The clock is in goodish order...... just a not so accurate.

It's off an **750.

The Black Bomber Board / Bits of metal found near inlet valve
« on: December 31, 2023, 12:25:58 PM »
Hello, I have owned the bike for over 11 years.  Its done at least 5k miles and has had several oil changes.  I decided to do a general service and check all the usual things.  Its been running ok, but it's winter time so never a better time.

I thought to check the valve clearance on all valves, so off with both the covers.  On the LH inlet side, there were some metal bits around the valve stem.
Pic of the lh inlet valve

and a pic of the bits of metal.  A solid ring of sorts

I am wondering if the cam chain tensioner has started to break up.  The cam chain is not as tight as I expected.
Is it possible to remove the lower cam tensioner (below the carbs) without taking the head off.

Has anybody else found bits like these.

Misc / Open / Keihin carb fuel pipe fix
« on: December 02, 2023, 11:47:14 AM »
Hello, Just managed to pull the Brass fuel pipe connector out of the Keihin carb.  See pic.

Does "super glue" work to hold these things back in.  Not sure if "soldering" would work.

Misc / Open / Nuts on inner tubes
« on: September 30, 2023, 06:18:55 PM »
You would have thought that after many years of changing tyres and tubes I would not need to ask the question.....
In the pic below .......
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Does one nut stay inside the rim and the other outside.  I have done it like this for years, but doubt has crept in.
Last week, I put a brand-new tyre and tube + rim tape on a rear wheel.  Within 35 miles the inner tube failed for some reason.  Not at the valve but within 15 cm.  The tyre seems ok.  I was still running the tyre/tube in.

Misc / Open / Carb Balancer kit
« on: September 20, 2023, 02:44:38 PM »
I am finally looking at getting one of these carb Balancer kits.  One of the 4 gauge ones.

It seems that there are a few sets of 4 gauge ones on "that" auction site.  Starting at 25 quid.

So my question is..... Is there much difference between the 25 quid sets and the 60 quid ones.  I guess the more expensive ones are more accurate?.

Or are the cheaper ones good enough.

SOHC Singles & Twins / CB360 K0 Not well
« on: August 26, 2023, 07:21:54 PM »
Hello, I have had this cb360 for 3 or 4 years and after its restoration have done some 3.5 k on it without any issues....... except for now.

It starts ok and pulls off ok but now won't rev over 5k in any gear.  Seems fine in the lower revs.  SO, before I start to investigate, I thought I would ask the obvious questions......

1.  Blocked main jet?
2.  Ignition Advance not working.? Stuck.
3.  Points gone duff.  Not looked yet.
4.  Some other mysterious and daft issue.

Other Bikes / exhausts ........... throw out or try to save??
« on: December 06, 2022, 02:43:31 AM »
Hello,  I took these to an exhaust specialist here in Notts to see if they could be rescued.  After 4 weeks the reply was NO.   So I picked them up and trudged off home.  I suspect they could not be bothered?  but I need another opinion.

and the other one.

There are two exhausts.  One better than the other.  Are they worth bothering with??

Misc / Open / old rider - new hip
« on: March 11, 2022, 01:53:19 AM »
I have to ask.  The time is nearing when a new hip will be needed/done.

Is there anybody on the forum with a new hip and still rides their bikes..   I have 10 of the things but wonder if I should stop after the op.  Maybe its time to call it a day.

Like to hear you opinions.  I have ridden bike since I was 16 and was hoping to go as long as I could ride even if its a cb360 or honda 90.

CB350/400 / cb350 four performance
« on: December 03, 2021, 04:43:09 PM »
I have a cb360 which is the smallest bike I have.  It has just enough performance to keep up with most traffic.  I would also fancy a cb350 four.  But was wondering if it has enough power to keep up with the traffic also.

So is the 350 four as quick as a cb360??.  Is that inline 4 of a 350 still ok in todays traffic.

I try to stick to the country lanes with the smaller bikes.  But those dual carriage ways have to be done also.

CB500/550 / DSS exhausts for a 550K3
« on: September 23, 2021, 12:20:06 AM »
Having finally brought my 550K3 back to life and done some 1000+ miles with its 4 into 1 motad exhaust I would like to return it to the 4 into 4 original setup.

I believe the dss k3 exhaust is the same as the cmsl ones.
So I have to ask...... for the asking price of nearly a grand.... are they a good set to replace the original honda ones.

I have had the bike from new and always liked the 4-into-4 setup.  They finally rotted away and I replaced them with the motad many years ago.

Thanks

SOHC Singles & Twins / A cb360 seat
« on: July 11, 2021, 08:40:44 PM »
The seat on my cb360 is past its best but the base is still good.

I was thinking of getting the reproduction seat from Mr Silver OR having the existing one recovered.

Has anybody tried the repo seat from DS.  I guess having the orig seat recovered is about the same cost?.

Thanks

[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

My chain lub can has a nice spray top.
It can be removed (middle of pic) when can is empty?.
And put on another can....(bottom of pic) in my case a nice can of wd40.

Cheap and simple.

CB500/550 / 550K3 cylinder compression
« on: June 13, 2021, 03:48:15 PM »
Hi, I stopped using my old K3 back in 1995 when it started burning loads of oil and poor performance.   Fast forward some 25 years later and I finally decided to restore the bike.

I pulled the top end off and was surprised to find there was no lip on the bores at all.  The rings and oil scrapers were well tired.  So I thought a very light hone and a new set of rings would be ok.  I also put some paraffin down the valve intakes to check for leaks.  They were still in good(ish) shape.

So it was all resembled and after much effort to get the carbs to stop leaking it finally was ready for the road.   The bike actually starts and runs ok.  It could do with the carbs being setup better but it does rev ok and pulls through the gears.
Unfortunately the speed does not match the engine revs.  So I thought it might be the clutch (42k) miles and purchased a new cllutch kit and cable from DSS.  I fitted these and it made no difference at all.

So next I checked the timing - looks almost spot on.  So finally I checked the compression.......
With COLD cylinders and no oil down bores and all plugs out and throttle fully open I tested each in turn.

I found the pressures to all be about 155-165/cylinder.  I think the manual says they should be 177psi.

So after some 200 miles the engine has improved a little but the engine still needs to rev too hard.  I was expecting about 5200k revs for 60mph.

I have been trying to keep the revs down to start with to run-in the engine after the rebuild.

My question is ...... is 155-165/cylinder too low?? when cold.  I should really try the test with a hot engine I guess.

Other than this issue it seems to run ok.

CB500/550 / CB550K3 Plug cap Resistance
« on: June 06, 2021, 08:47:56 PM »
The plug caps on my cb550k3 are as old as the Dinosaurs..... But the engine starts ok and does idle.

I thought I would check if they needed replacing, and maybe the plugs too(DR7ES).
I checked the resistance of each plug cap(NGK).  Some are 5k and both outer caps are 10K+ (ohms).

Now 2 questions.....
1. Should the caps all be the same resistance?  5k ohms.
2. If the caps have resistance then the plugs should NOT be .

My current set up is resistor in both caps & plugs.  Not good I suspect.

So a set of new NGK plug caps with 5k ohms and a new set of d7ea plugs(non resistor).

CB500/550 / Accurate cb550k3 wiring diagram
« on: May 29, 2021, 04:48:45 PM »
Is there such a thing as an Accurate cb550k3 wiring diagram for a 1976 550K3.  I have what I believe is a 1976 550K3 from new.  BUT I needed to look at several wiring diagrams to fine one that almost fits the bike.

The Haynes manual fits the best (shock)and thats for the cb550F.  The strange thing is.....when I ordered some new throttle cables for a cb550K3 a while ago from dss they did not fit...... In the end a CB550F throttle cable did.  I have long wondered if the bike I bought new from a shop in Peterborough was actually an F1/F2 disguised as an K3.  It was the last year before the cx500 arrived in the showrooms and I suspect the bike shop was keen to be rid of the old 550's.
