CB500/550 / CB550K3 the first clutch friction plate.
« on: May 21, 2021, 03:13:25 AM »
I finally decided to replace the friction plates and springs on my cb550k3.  I bought the clutch kit from DSS for the 550k3.
I removed the original clutch plates keeping them in the right order.  I found in the dss kit that the friction plate thats on the outside of the clutch is different to the others.

Not a problem except it looks different and is thicker that the other friction plates.

My question is which way around does this plate go on.  It is just like the pic below.

There are no instructions as too which way it should go on.

Is there a correct way??

Misc / Open / Would you use a 10 year old tyre??
« on: May 19, 2021, 07:36:45 PM »
From 1 February 2021 the introduction of the ban on 10-year-old tyres came into force.  It seems to only apply to commercial transport.... lorrys, buses etc at the moment.
I wonder how long it will be before it is applied to all vehicles.

Maybe its a good thing.  Maybe!

Tricks & Tips / Pulling the CB360 generator rotor
« on: May 14, 2021, 10:53:37 PM »
I needed to pull that rotor off my cb360.  I wanted to check the starting clutch since its making a racket.

I dont have a rotor puller.  The suzuki GT550 rotor is dead easy.  A bolt or 2 and it can prized off.

It looked like I needed an M16 bolt to get the rotor off the cb360.   But wait a minute..... the rear axle bolt on the GT550 also is a M16.
I had a spare so did need to take the one off the gt550.  It fitted the cb360 rotor fine.  A couple of turns and off popped the cb360 rotor.

So if you own a Suzuki GT550 & a CB360 and you want to remove the rotor on the cb360..... use the gt550 rear axle.
Who would have thought.  Unlikely I know.

Misc / Open / waiting times for the dvla v5
« on: May 14, 2021, 06:04:02 PM »
Sent off the paperwork for the registration for the cb360.  Just wondering in these times what the waiting times are likely to be to get the v5.  Long gone are the days of walking into the local dvla offices and getting the paperwork verified and checked on the same day.
Sent 2 weeks ago....
So is it sometime next year
or maybe before xmas
or 6 weeks ??

I did once get a new V5 within 7 working days.  Must have been done by a new recruit who was still keen.

SOHC Singles & Twins / cb360 UK head lamp
« on: May 05, 2021, 11:49:09 PM »
Hello, Did the Uk CB360 G5 have a bulb headlight and not a sealed beam unit?.  I have a USA cb360 K0 import and its the sealed beam headlamp.  It does have both beams working so its ok for now.
But I would change it for the separate bulb system.  Im sure the CB250G5 UK model was NOT sealed beam??.

Has anybody changed the sealed beam for the bulb headlamp.

Misc / Open / cb550 clock repairs
« on: April 07, 2021, 04:18:36 PM »
I remember reading on this forum or somewhere that there was a recommended speedo & rev counter restorer in Lincolnshire.  I just cannot find that info at the moment.  The clocks have just stopped being accurate after 46 or so years.

I would rather take them to the restorer and pick them up than trust the post.

I know there are several good clock restorers about but someone closer to notts is preferred.

Other Bikes / Flat tyre (again)
« on: February 25, 2021, 10:22:44 PM »
So at a lowish speed The rear kicked out and I stopped within 50 meters.  Lucky really.  And there it was, a flat rear tyre.  Within an hour I was on the back of a pickup and taken home.  All very civilized.

Heres a pic of the offending nail, or screw .

Its a tyre with a tube.
So in times gone past all I have done is replaced the inner tube with a new one.  But I have wondered if I should also have the tyre itself repaired also.  I have gotten old and the doubts are creeping in. I always thought a new inner tube was all thats needed.

SOHC Singles & Twins / A cb360 side panel repair?
« on: February 02, 2021, 06:50:48 PM »
So my latest toy arrived several months ago, almost complete - at least it saves the long hunt for those unobtainable parts......
The left side panel does exist.  But in bits.  I can of course use the bike without a side panel but its nice to have one.

Considering how many cb250/360 blue bikes have been made and imported into this country I thought there might be the odd one posted on that favorite site.  So far there has not been a LHS one posted.  Or I have missed it.

So I thought I might have ago at repairing the broken one..... see pic

Has anybody found a way of fixing these plastic panels. We are not talking "show Queen" bike, so it does not need to be perfect.
With the current/permanent import tariffs/Tax issues I am not so keen on buying from abroad.

SOHC Singles & Twins / A cb360. Tyre choice
« on: December 28, 2020, 05:55:40 PM »
Well its time to get some new rubbers for those 1974 cb360 wheels.  They are 3.00x18 front & 3.50x18 rear.
The choice seems to be some Metzeler - ME77 front & rear Or some Dunlop K82's

Just wondering if anybody has tried either of these or have another suggestion.  I normally like Bridgestone Bt45 but there is not the same size match for these.

CB500/550 / A new Honda Clutch Cable for a cb550k3
« on: November 19, 2020, 07:39:56 PM »
I decided to replace the original clutch cable on my cb550k3.  It may not be the absolute original.... I forget if I replaced it in the past.

However the new one is a nice, smooth operating one.  All nice and new.

My question is..... should I leave it as is or drop some oil down inside the cable.  I have heard that oiling the new cables is not required.

Being old fashioned I still think some oil is best

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Top yoke weld
« on: November 17, 2020, 01:46:08 PM »
As can be seen in the pic below the top yoke has snapped some time in the past.  Only found out when taking the front off to check the head bearings.

So the question is....... can these be welded.  And if so who is a good place to send it to

CB500/550 / cb550k3. Its alive after 26 years of snoozing.
« on: November 14, 2020, 05:19:56 AM »
So having done battles with the carbs for weeks I decided it could go for an mot.  Its not registered as historic vehicle yet so it helps with the paperwork at the GPO to have an MOT.
Well it did make it to the mot station but it was plain that all was not well.  The speedo became stuck at 20 mph and slowly went back to zero when stopped.  The rev counter also had very limited range.  So these will need to visit a clock repairer.

The major issue seems to be that the revs seem to be high compared to the speed.  There does not seem to be any obvious clutch slip as you pull way but by 5th gear the speed is about 40mph and the engine is revving too high for the speed.

I have had the bike from new so I know all the history.  Its done 42k miles on the original clutch.  I am wondering if I should replace the clutch plates and/or springs.  I cannot take all of the slack out of the clutch cable anymore either by adjusting the engine end or handlebar side.  Maybe after sitting unused for all those years the clutch plates are not serviceable anymore.

Is it clutch change time??

SOHC Singles & Twins / cb360.... well it is a sohc
« on: November 12, 2020, 06:02:56 AM »
So I have gone and bought a cb360.  A 1974 with a twin leading shoe front brake. Mostly original as well.  As with any bike that is 46 years old its not always easy to tell the satin black paintwork from the gloss.   The frame is not that bad at all.  Its the great thing about an import.  Usually they are not too rusty.

Anyway, some parts of the frame are a bit dull/scruffy so I want to freshen them up.....

Does anybody know if the front foot pegs are satin black along with the steering stem.  I think the rest of the frame parts are gloss black.  Or at least they were when it left the factory.
I will get the battery box and tool box powder coated since they are the scruffy.  The frame I will keep original.

CB500/550 / cb550K3 carbs
« on: August 18, 2020, 01:33:35 AM »
So.... a part of the resurrection of my K3 was the refurb of the carbs. They are the originals.  So I took them mostly apart and cleaned up.  Then back together.  I made a jig to hold them and did a static fuel test........ They flooded.

Anyway after a bit of effort and re-setting the carbs up they would sit on the end of the fuel line from the tank and not flood or leak.  Which was all very pleasing.

So I put them on the bike and connected up the cables and air box.  It initially ran ok, no flooding but the idle and balance was a bit off.

Some 10 days later I get around to checking for air leaks on the carb rubbers etc.  Except now the carbs flood again.  Well one of them is - the lhs one.  Which is a pain.

My question is..... These are the old original carb floats.  Do they fail with age??.  I am thinking that they have sat there for nearly 2 weeks fueled up.  Do they go porous with age and now dont "float" as well when left in fuel.

I think its the last issue to fix before going for the mot. Its a long time since its been on the road so its still not registered as 'historic'

CB500/550 / earthing the wire loom. cb550k3
« on: May 30, 2020, 03:49:32 PM »
Its ages ago i started the re-build for the 550.  In fact I have built a couple of other bikes since.....  So its the same old story - many years after the re-build started I finally returned to finish it.  The frame & bits have all been powder coated etc so its been well apart and now nearly all back together again.  Almost.

There is a earth strap from the engine to the battery.  Which is good.  But was there an earth strap from the engine to frame and/or a earth point on the wiring loom.  The wiring diagram shows a earth point.  So I need to earth it somewhere.  I cannot find an earthing wire from the loom.  Was it a bullet connector and wire to frame.

Digital cameras make re-builds much easier nowadays.  Back in 1995 when I started to fix the 550 the cameras were a bit pricey.
