I was thinking that too.

Even though I'm without bike I still keep on looking at what's going on.

I fly to Australia 3 weeks on Friday!

Pae's right. I replaced the one on my CB550F2 exactly as he said.

I used one from David Silvers and it worked a treat.

Much better than silicon Hermetite.

A while back I was given a'69 G plate 175 which had a seized cam.

Once everyting was fixed I couldn't get any oil up the stud to the head. Stripped off the clutch case and found a nice blob of orange Hermetite sitting in an oilway.

A previous owner had done some work and used too much with disastrous results.

20mm sounds an awful lot of sag to take out.

As you say you won't know how it handles until you ride it but may find it bottoms out easily under braking due to the springs compressing fully and becoming solid.

Perhaps it might be wise to consider replacing the springs.

Welcome to the forum Alex.

Lots of knowledge on this forum and they're a frindly bunch so good luck in your search.

I've just sold my 1978 CB550F2 as I'm emigrating to Melbourne in September. I'm looking forward to seeing what's available once I get settled.

Looking at the badge holes I would also say it's a K3. The F1 and F2 had transfers on the panels.

It really is Mike.

Mine came out and slipped back in with no effort.

I had a similar problem on a CB750F2C where No 4 was flooding, especially when idling so I suspected the float height.

When I stripped it down I found that someone had replaced the non adjustable plastic float with a brass one. I put a plastic float back in but the level was still too high so I ended up putting the brass one back in and stting it to spec and it cured the problem.

Bit of a mystery though as the other 3 plastic floats were fine but the fourth was too high, yet there's no no means of adjustment.

Thanks for that Dave. I had a feeling it was for the US market.

CB350/400 / CB400 F1 and F2
« on: May 30, 2009, 08:59:29 AM »
A question for all our CB400 experts...

Was there any difference between the F1 and F2 models other than cosmetic details such as the tank colour and decals?

I've been asked this question by someone who thinks that the F2 had higher bars and that the footrests had been moved forward to give a more upright riding position.

I seem to remember that the only differences were cosmetic as the riding position was said to be very good.

I may be wrong, however, so I thought I'd ask the experts...

You"ll need to remove the wheel, mudguard and brake caliper from the legs.

Slacken the bolts at the top and bottom yokes and slide the legs downwards and out of the yokes.

The stanchions then need to be removed from the legs. There's a bolt or allen key recessed in each leg.

This will then give you access to the seals. There's usually some sort of wire circlip over the top of the seals which will have to be removed to get the seals out.

Your manual will give you full details.
