Spooky! I've just sold my 1978 550 to come to Oz.

A 4lb lump hammer is a useful companion to your impact driver and together they make a formidable team! :)

From memory one of the holes in the metal plate is keyhole shaped and fits onto a lug on the frame above the pivot.

The spring fits in the hole on the other end and fits onto a lug on one of the stand legs. I think!

Biffta should be along soon and he should be able to confirm. Dave?

An impact driver is a must for a Jap bike.

I've had mine for nearly 30 years and wouldn't be without it.

Did you take all the jets out of each carb body for cleaning? You may need to soak each one in cellulose thinners before blowing them out with carb cleaner and compressed air and then check visually.

Did you clean the internal drillings in each carb body?

Are the floats OK? No petrol inside them? No leaks?

How about the float heights? All checked and set correctly?

Any leaks from the carb overflows when the engine's not running with the fuel tap on?

Pilot screws set to manufacturers settings? May need tweaking.

Is the air filter clean? Try running briefly without the filter and see if there's any improvement.

Carbs can be so fickle and difficult to fettle when they've been standing for a long time with fuel in.

Good luck.

Hi Cosky.

Welcome to the forums.

I'm moving to Melbourne later this year. Too much hassle to export my bike so I've sold it and I'm hoping to get  another bike when I get over there.

The carbs will need stripping and cleaning thoroughly if it's been standing that long.

As far as the air screw goes, it depends where it sits on the carb.

If it is positioned on the engine side of the throttle butterfly then the screw controls the idle fuel flow so turning the screw in will make the idle mixture leaner.

If it is on the airbox side of the throttle butterfly then the screw is an air bleed so turning it out will make the mixture leaner.

On my F2 turning the screws out leans the idle mixture.
