Tricks & Tips / Re: Love this thead
« on: January 23, 2018, 12:34:29 AM »
I haven't started any of my 500 engines for over 30 years, so no chance of looking. I do have a few spare crankcases lying around, next time I see one I'll drop some fluid down the oil pump outlet and see where it comes out.

I remember the oil filter bolt quite well, certainly remember the way the valve was held in but never had the need to remove the valve. I seemed to recall the spring is the first thing fitted, then the washer, then the filter not the other way round as you explain it. It was why most people lost the washer when changing the filter as you couldn't see it under the filter and the pressure used to stick it to the filter sealing rubber and got thrown away with the filter, that would make the valve being fitted just under the head of the bolt not near the crankcase. If my recollection is correct of course.
I think you're confusing the pressure relief valve with the big spring that fits over the bolt. Different thing altogether.  :o

Well done Julie. Great work. This thread has and will be a great resource for us 400/4 'novices'.  :)

Be careful when putting grippers on fences and gates etc. If Johnny their cuts his hands on them whilst trying to burgle you and can actually sue you for his injuries! If you place a notice on the public side warning of the danger they have no redress. This is why you no longer see barb wire on fencing. Any deterrent must be visible or notified (electric fences one example).  The country has gone mad and favours the criminal rather then the potential victim, it's the PC brigade again! A mate of mine spreads filthy old tractor grease over the top of his fence, once you get that all over your hands and clothes you'd want to get away sharpish as you've left your fingerprints in the grease, perfect for the police 👌.
Good news you are back in operation though Roy.

I don't care if little Johnny low life get's hurt, i can live with that, and if he breaks in while i am there, well use your imagination, this country may have gone mad , but i can get madder.

Well said! 😈

Looking good. There might be a problem with that camshaft though!  ;) :o

If you feel sure the spare moped is not nicked I don't see a problem.
Have it for the spare parts. If you're not sure about scrapping it, give the local scrap yard a ring. He'll tell you if he's able to take it without v5. Hth.

Very bad news. Things can only get better. Don't let it get you down too much.

They look pretty close to what I had in mind. Might need to modify the end fitting profile slightly.
Cheers. ☺

CB350/400 / Alternative footpegs
« on: December 20, 2017, 11:50:50 PM »
The standard 400/4 footpegs are a bit on the chunky size for my cafe style rebuild.
Can anybody recommend an alternative footpeg that will fit the original Honda
mountings? I'm looking for a modern style aluminium peg without going for rearsets. (Too old and creaky for that!)

CB350/400 / Re: CB400/4 FRONT FORK REFURB BY JULIE

Well, at least I didn't have to strip them down and start again. But, if I had of got the seals in the wrong way, I would have been quite pissed off with myself more than anything, as I used up a lot of mental energy concentrating on getting them right  ;D ;D ;D ;D
Good news. I'm glad that you don't have to undo your good work.
Being a cheapskate I used pattern seals with a single lip on mine.  ;D

I suppose it's a lesson to all of us. Never assume that the old parts were fitted correctly in the first place!
Even factory original parts can be fitted wrongly.  :-\

Yep, bloody previous owners, they have a lot to answer for at times !!!
And I thought I was doing so well. Never mind. I wonder if that's why the forks got stuck down sometimes ?

It may be. The stantions are straight aren't they?
Your rebuild is going really well. The fork seals are just a little hiccup. Everybody has them so no big deal.

Looking forward to the rest of the bike rebuild.  8)
