CB650 / Honda clutch rattle
« on: July 16, 2013, 08:22:34 PM »
Hi

My CB650C had terrible clutch basket rattle at tickover especially when it is warm in this hot weather. I was told these models were prone to this. I was also told that balancing the carbs would sort this out but it seems not.

How do I go about fixing this?

Cheers

CB650 / Charging issues
« on: July 16, 2013, 08:01:51 PM »
Hi

I am having charging issues.

So far I have replaced both parts of the alternator with good second hand parts that were fully tested before putting them on. At the moment it is charging I think. At tickover it has 12.4v across the battery. At 2.5k rpm it has 14V across the battery. At 5k rpm it has 14.8V across the battery. The battery seems to be charging. If I take the battery off the bike and charge it up overnight using my Optimate it charges and if left it stays charged up.

However when switch the lights on it drops a full volt and at tickover it only reads 11.4 across the battery. When switched off and back on again the battery behaves as thought it has dumped all it's power and won't hardly turn over. But if it is left for half an hour or so seems to recover. It does not do this with the lights off and behaves as though it is fully charged.

I don't know what to replace next. I am assuming the reg/rec is ok as it never goes above 14.8v and the manual says as long as it is under 15v it is ok.

I may replace the battery but it is less than a year old!

I don't know why the lights seem to run the battery flat so quickly.

Thanks for any help.

Cheers

Other Bikes / An excellent restoration project for someone

Hi

Seen this whilst surfing the Honda's on the bay!

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HONDA-CB250-CLASSIC-MOTORCYCLE-/140871671607?_trksid=p2045573.m2102&_trkparms=aid%3D555003%26algo%3DPW.CAT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D33%26meid%3D3122872265641688805%26pid%3D100034%26prg%3D1031%26rk%3D3%26

I have no connection to the seller BTW!

Just thought it would interest the Honda lovers on here! I took my motorcycle test in 1986 and bought my Honda VT250 that year! That is how long it has been since this little gem was on the road!

CB650 / Carb issues
« on: October 14, 2012, 09:36:09 AM »
Hi

OK guys... I have been reading up on issues relating to my Layla (81 CB650C US import). Basically it only runs on choke and only on two cylinders!

I am going to go and buy a compression tester on monday to test the compression. It is not running on cylinders 3 and 4. I am suspecting that, since it only has 25K miles, and due to it standing since 2003 that the piston rings are stuck. The received wisdom as far I can tell is to not worry about it and get a few miles on the clock and they will free up of themselves.

The only problem is I need to get it running right first. All indications are that I have carb issues that need sorting! Now my bike had VB44A carbs but two of them were scrap. I don't know what was in them but it was nasty! Like black paint stripper! I have a set of VB54A carbs off a french CB650 on it at the moment. But the jets and air screws are off a set of VB54B carbs. The jets are #90 they are smaller that the ones from the VB44A as originally fitted which were #120. I may have a go with the VB54B carbs and see what that does. I have a problem though. The VB54A and VB54B carbs both have two air pipes on them that I don't know what they are for! Or where they should connect to! Are they just harmless air vents or am I missing a trick here or what?

I have tried winding out the air screws until they are nearly falling out and it still won't run with the choke off!

Help!

CB650 / Spark Plug stuff on CB650C
« on: October 12, 2012, 04:58:09 PM »
Hi

Well I think I am going to have to do a compression test on my engine to see whether it is any good or not. Despite only covering 25k miles from new I suspect that it may have issues! I am suspecting the valves may not be seating right on one or maybe two cylinders. I want to confirm that it has good compression before I send it around the corner to the bike shop to have the carbs balanced etc and/or ignition issues looked into.

I want to buy a spark plug socket that will enable me to remove the inner two spark plugs. I really wanted a draper 12mm flexi spark plug wrench but they only do 10mm and 14mm no 12mm  >:(

I am thinking of buying a draper 12mm plug socket http://www.drapertoolbox.co.uk/draper-expert-38-square-drive-4315-63423 or this http://www.dirtbikebitz.com/spark-plug-spanner-wrench-12mm-stroke-p-5516.html?utm_campaign=products&utm_medium=BaseFeed1&utm_source=GoogleBase1. Does anybody know if both will fit the inner plugs or care to advise me as to which is the better option?

As the inner two plugs are real devils to get at  :'(

Fortunately the cylinder that is not running right is the outside right so if I need to I could just compare the compression on 1 and 4 and if really bad then I don't need to compare the inner ones as the head will have to come off anyway!

I hoping that I can find a plug wrench combo that works for me. I asked at the bike shop round the corner and they use snap on gear (a tad expensive for me!).

CB650 / Exhaust rechroming

Hi

Has anybody sent away a set of exhausts for rechroming? What do you do about the insides of the exhaust? The baffles and packing and stuff...

CB650 / Right hand switchgear
« on: September 30, 2012, 10:35:23 AM »
Hi

I am after a right hand switch gear for the 650. Mine does not have the on/sides/off switch for the lights as it is a US model. I understand that the 750 and 900 have the same ones. I think it is part number 35150463680 (35150-MA2-600). I t is not available from Western hills, CMS or David Silver!

Can any one help?

CB650 / Mechanical (Piston valve) or Constant velocity carbs
« on: September 25, 2012, 07:01:21 PM »
Hi

Which are better Mechanical (Piston valve) or constant velocity carbs on a CB650?

I know the CV carbs are found on the later models and have mahosive main jets compared to the older mechanical carbs (92 vs 120).

But does later = better? Better performance? Better durability?

I know the older ones you can set the float height but the CV ones are fixed level floats.

Just wondering...

Cheers

CB650 / CB650C

Hi

Well as promised/threatened her is 'Layla'. http://www.flickr.com/photos/discoclover/sets/72157631696801215/. Hope that is comes out!

I think I have a lot of work ahead of me. Almost all of the chrome work will need replacing or redoing. I have to take the center stand off and get it shot blasted and painted. All the engine casings etc will need re-polishing.

The battery won't take a charge. The 'rides lovely' was a bit of a stretch of the imagination as it is only running on three cylinders with the fourth not at all. I took the plug out and it was bone dry so obviously 'the only thing that needs doing is balance the carbs' really means a complete overhaul!

Apart from that it it a solid little bike and after a few months and a lot of cash it will be a half decent bike!

I have a big parts list and all of the stuff seems to be in the USA so costs double because of the postage!

I have one part that I need to fix the grab rail on with. I wonder if anybody could help? It is described as a Bolt, Bumper setting and is Honda P/N 91085-426-000. I have found it listed on a couple of sites but it almost always not in stock and listed as 'discontinued stock'. It goes between the rear mudguard and the frame and is one of the fixing points for the grab rail. Mine has the stub of an old bolt broken off in it. I could drill it out but for the cost of a replacement it hardly seems worthwhile unless no one has one!

Cheers

John

CB650 / Newbie
« on: September 14, 2012, 11:55:16 AM »
Hi Guys

Just thought I would introduce myself and say something about me bike(s)! I have been around bikes since I was 15. Am now 44years young! I have owned loads of bikes in my time some of the better road going ones were a 76 RD350, 77 Suzuki GT750, 83 Kawasaki Z1100LTD (import from the US), and a GPZ1000RX.

I had to take some time out 4 years ago when I suffered a stroke. So I sold my GPZ thou and hung up my leathers and resigned myself to my fate. Or so it seemed but after a lot of soul searching I decided to not let my body get the better of me! After regular gym work, and buying a dog to walk everyday, I am fighting fit now. Earlier this year I got a Honda 100cc Bali EX to wizz around town on. But I had a real hankering for something bigger, much bigger, again! But the finances just were not there so I began looking for a restoration project. After a few near misses (I really wanted a CX500 Custom) I settled in the end for a CB650CB Custom. Another US import!

It is an 81 model. It has 12 months ticket and is pretty sound apart from a few bit missing and some little jobs to do. The guy bought it for a cafe racer project that he never got around to starting so I rescued it. I aim to put it back to original and ride it. I think it would be a shame to do a 100% pristine restoration job on it. It needs the carbs balancing as it pop and bangs when cold (I thought a 30 year old was meant to do this anyway? Apparently not?). It needs attention to a split in the seat. The exhausts are off a CB650 and are 4 into 2 affairs, but I am not sure if they are original or not as according to my research they should be 4 into 4 on the Cb Custom varient?, so they may need changing. It also has no grab rail, the headlight is not original, it is missing the head light brackets (has a pair of after market clip on affairs!), and the chrome trim across the front with the Honda badge on it is missing. It has covered 25K miles so I think it has spent a lot of time languishing in somebody's garage not being used.

So expect a few questions as I deal in and find what secrets are lurking for me!

Cheers

John
