Project Board / Re: Return of the Foale
« on: May 21, 2015, 10:01:37 PM »
A couple more to be going on with - side view showing the De Carbon shock which Gremlin Racetech managed to source, which is the type as fitted originally, and one showing the delightful brake caliper mounts. These were taken a while ago but as explained already, it has gone on hold for a year or two. I don't mind putting a project on ice for a bit, but this bike spent 17 years in a back garden under a tarpaulin before I got hold of it so it would be a shame not to see it through!

Project Board / Return of the Foale
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:05:59 PM »
I can't find my old thread, but some of you may remember my Foale framed CB750 project - the avatar shows it before stripdown, and by spring last year it had progressed very well and rather expensively, so much so that work went on hold while I frittered money on irrelevancies like children and food. Anyway it now looks like work can restart and with luck it may see the completion of this thing during the summer. The biggest remaining hurdle is cutting and brazing the Swarbrick CR750 exhausts to route round the sidestand, and to make the 'silencers' (notthe  most accurate description...) sweep up a bit and avoid the swinging arm. In summary it is now a Wiseco 836cc motor with a close ratio box of unknown origin, CR29 Keihin carbs, a lumpy camshaft of unknown make, Lockheed calipers on custom mounts, and a Rickman-based fuel tank with oil tank within, beautifully made by Holtworks of Essex.
I'll try to keep the board updated with progress anyway. Safe riding folks!

Other Bikes / Foale CB750 update
« on: July 23, 2012, 10:03:56 PM »
Sorry folks but have been mainly on the USA sister site with this one, but had some top class help and advice off the .co.uk site early on - just a couple of pics to show 'before and after' or perhaps more accurately 'before and as far as I have got so far' with the Foale frame and K4 engine. Not running yet, but final shape now in sight.

New Member Introductions / Re: Suggestions invited regarding dilemma
« on: July 23, 2012, 09:57:36 PM »
Bit late replying but what a dilemma! Personally I hate selling bikes (apart from an RD250 I had in 1980!) and would keep both, but then again if you can get silly money for it without spending a penny on it then that is probably the best course. And there are people who will spend daft (in my opinion) amounts on some stuff. I was on the point of skipping the Henry Abe wheels on my CB, then nearly kept them, then put them on ebay and they went to Japan for over 700 quid! Paid for some nice spoked ones and money left over.

If anyone wants to tune into this  - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b019hg1n/episodes/guide

You may be unfortunate enough to get a glimpse of my ugly mug on it - they filmed some clips of anecdotes from me (and hundreds of other far more successful cops than me!) and put them together for this series. They may well have edited me out completely, but it promises to be a good series from what the producers reckoned - always nice to hear of the criminal classes screwing up!

Now this may sound a long way off in terms of both time and distance, but bear with me - The Shetland Classic Motor Show and Tours 2012 dates are now confirmed, it is from 31st May to 5th June 2012, with the exhibition itself being over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June.
I have to say I am not one who habitually attends shows - I did Stafford about 3 years ago, I went to the NEC Bike Show for several years on the run but haven't been to that for maybe four years or more, but the Shetland Classic is different. It is held every two years, so if you don't go this time then you can't go again until 2014. I thought i'd give it a go in 1998 as a one-off. I have been back for every one since, so in an anoracky sort of way this will be my eighth. Yes it is a long way - for me it is 370 miles to Aberdeen, then there's the overnight ferry trip to Lerwick. Some travel a lot further, but as far as I am aware everyone who has been has enjoyed it. The Show itself attracts (as I recall) about 500 exhibits in various groups from bicycles through stationary engines, motorcycles, cars, commercials and ultimately Traction Engines (5 of them in 2010), and exhibitors from all over the UK and beyond - Faroe, Denmark, Holland - even Wales. One bloke comes regularly in a Vincent with wicker sidecar. If you want to see dedication personified, watch his other half trying to walk after getting out of the sidecar at Aberdeen docks!
Last time the oldest vehicle was a 1904 Darracq, and the bike exhibits run from the early years of the last century up to the present day. Exhibits are either in the inside halls of the very large Clickimin Centre in Lerwick, or in the grounds around it. If you put your bike in as an exhibit it doesn't mean it gets locked away - it can be parked outside overnight (with security patrol free of charge for peace of mind) and you can use it as often as you like to explore the place, or you can join one of the Tours which take place on the two days before and the two days after the main weekend, depending on the class of vehicle - car, bike, commercial, and the date of the vehicle - pre or post 1980, or was it 1960, I forget, but you get the idea.
For a taste of what was there in previous years there is a fairly crappy website at http://shetlandcms.co.uk/    but the photos are good and give you an idea of things.
If you want to express an interest in going then you need to contact Graham Johnston at graham.johnston10@btinternet.com or write to The Shetland Classic Car Club c/o 69 Gilbertson Road,Lerwick, Shetland ZE1 0QJ. Bookings start in November and spaces on the ferry are limited, so if you at least express an interest then you will get early notification of what is available. They do arrange discounts on the ferry fares, and a variety of packages to get best value for money. There are loads of hotels, B&Bs, and camping with excellent facilities.
Additional to all this, the people are incredibly friendly and welcoming, the scenery is amazing, and it is as far from a Monday morning as it is possible to get.
I'm going, and all being well the Foale project is too. And the wife of course.

Why motorcycles are better than women.....

When you get one it doesn't come with a mother-in-law
When you finish with a motorcycle, it's still worth something
They don't whine about you going out again
You never have to wait for them to get ready
They don't care if you forget your anniversary of your first ride
Good motorcycles are available everywhere

BUT!!! -

Why motorcycles are better than men.....
Your bike doesn't have a spare tyre
They don't ask you do something perverted just because you're wearing leather
They have a kill switch
When they spring a leak, it only splashes on the road
They don't get you pregnant
They don't ask you to make dinner

A couple was golfing on an exclusive course surrounded by million dollar homes. As they prepared to tee off, the husband warned the wife to try to stay away from the houses.
"We couldn't afford to replace any of those huge windows," he said.
Sure enough, the wife shanks one right into a window. The couple walk over, knock on the door, and hear someone say "Come on in".
They enter and see broken glass on the carpet, and the golf ball next to a broken antique bottle. A man sitting on the couch asks, "Is this your golf ball?"
"Yeah, we're really sorry." said the husband.
"Actually, I want to thank you," said the man. "You see, I'm a genie and have been trapped in that bottle for over 1,000 years. I can grant three wishes when I've been released, but since you did it accidentally, I'll give you each one wish and keep the final one for myself. What do you wish for?"
The husband wished for a million dollars a year for the rest of his life.
"Done!" replied the genie.
The wife then wished for a new house in every country of the world.
"Done!" said the genie. "Now for my wish. I've been trapped alone for over 1,000 years. I wish to have sex with your wife."
The husband thinks for a moment, then tells the wife, "Well, he's given us what we want, so I guess that I don't mind."
So the wife and the genie head upstairs to a bedroom. After two hours of ravishing the woman, the genie rolls over and looks at the wife.
"By the way," he asks, "how old is your husband?"
"Thirty-five" she replies.
"Wow!" he says. "35 years old and he still believes in genies ... amazing, isn't it?"

Always worth knowing good transport services - I used this firm http://www.biketransport.co.uk/  to collect a bike in Spain and bring it to the UK. Door to door cost

An elderly man was stopped by the police around 2 a.m and was asked where he was going at that time of night.

The man replied,

"I'm on my way to a lecture about alcohol abuse and the effects it has on the human body, as well as smoking and staying out late."

The officer then asked,

"Really? Who's giving that lecture at this time of night?"

The man replied,

"That would be my wife."

Fascinating - I drive a Toyota Auris. I don't have a picture of myself next to it as although it is a pokey diesel one it is still a bit bland to look at.  In order not to annoy the moderator of this site I can't put a picture of myself up - I am far too ugly for public websites, but have attached a picture of my feet on holiday last year in Italy. They enjoyed it very much apparently.
Meanwhile back home the engine for my Foale frame has been dismantled and found to have a knacked main bearing so I am currently hunting a 750 motor with a broken gearbox for some cannibalising.

Where's My Old Bike? / Black 1975 CB500/4 KCA257N
« on: September 01, 2011, 10:42:34 PM »
I sold this bike in 1981 in the South Manchester area. It was fitted with a chrome 4 into 2 exhaust, a Rickman cafe racer fairing, clip-ons and rearsets. I heard from a third party that it was fitted with a CB550 engine about a year later, but never had that confirmed. Haven't seen it since I sold it - has anyone else?
