Do you test compression with the throttle completely open?

Nope. Am I supposed to? I test it cold. I take out one of the spark plugs, screw in the meter and with the kill switch on use the electric starter to get the engine to turn a few times.
Yes, open the throttle completely, and let the engine turn over until the meter doesn't go up anymore. Now I'm curious what the meter will tell you....
And it works best with ALL the spark plugs out!

Same, even if the greasegun thread just goes one turn in the banjo hole the piston will pop out nicely!

Tappet adjuster lock nuts are smaller than 10mm on the 400/4, about 8mm if I remember correctly. That's why I think it is for a 400/4 tool kit and probably hundreds of other small Hondas.
Tappet nuts on the 400 are 9 mm.

The lower it can go the better the engine is inside.
True, but as these engines need oil pressure to run, it's wise to only try this once. The lower your revs go, the lower your oil pressure goes....

If you use magnetic screwdrivers it saves you loosing the screws as they come out.
Not if you use stainless steel nuts and screws...

Did you put the nut on with the sixsided end pointing IN?

Thanks Toko Jo I know Ash , I'll give him a call.
As for other suggestions. Yes battery is the right way around
The plug it in and one at a time theory is great if the fuse doesn't blow but as its still blowing it won't find it.
Still head scratching cheers
Replacing the fuse with a lightbulb makes fault finding much easier (and cheaper, doesn't cost so many fuses.)

Check the contact points are assembled correctly, and not just earthing,

This. If the insulating rings aren't in the correct order on the points screws they're constantly earthed.

Says no stock Rob?
You are right, so I searched a bit further, and at www.pietparts.nl there should be one in stock.
I called them and he'll look into it tonight and let me know tomorrow, and he does sending to the UK. His price would come to €42, without postals...So @Juitz, you can also call him yourself, his number is on his site!
