It's 42 degrees here and we're getting ready to go out to a New Year's Eve party so I'll take this opportunity to wish everyone a happy and prosperous 2011 while I can!

Hi again.

We've now been in Melbourne for 2 weeks and have finally got some rather slow access to the internet so here I am.

Still house hunting at the moment but once that's done I can start looking seriously for a job and some wheels. Hopefully a nice old Honda.

I'll keep you posted.

CB350/400 / CB400 F1 and F2
« on: May 30, 2009, 08:59:29 AM »
A question for all our CB400 experts...

Was there any difference between the F1 and F2 models other than cosmetic details such as the tank colour and decals?

I've been asked this question by someone who thinks that the F2 had higher bars and that the footrests had been moved forward to give a more upright riding position.

I seem to remember that the only differences were cosmetic as the riding position was said to be very good.

I may be wrong, however, so I thought I'd ask the experts...

Out & About / Spring is coming..
« on: February 26, 2009, 08:22:34 PM »
so I've just spent a very enjoyable couple of hours in the garage getting my bike ready for the good weather. (Yeah, right!)

I dug the feeler gauges out and did the plugs, points and valve clearances and checked the timing.

The cam chain tension's been set and the steering head bearings checked and set after the recent work on the steering head.

Stick it all back together and just for a laugh a couple of prods on the kick and all is running sweetly.

I find it a very therapeutic and relaxing way to while away the hours. (Wife doesn't agree though.)

Just got to change the oil and filter, give the air filter a shake and set and lubricate the chain and we're ready to go.

Bring on the Spring.  :)

The smell of your bike in the garage after a ride?

I was out on my 550 earlier this afternoon blowing a few cobwebs out and put it back in the garage.

I've just been back into the garage and there's that smell of a warm engine, warm oil and petrol.

I've been riding for many years but it's always been something I've liked.

Sad old git or what...  :)

Must be getting old.  ::)

Interchangeability / CB550 Tank Badges.
« on: December 22, 2008, 12:26:24 PM »
Tank badges from a CB550F1 or a K3 will fit an F2.

Only difference is that one is finished in silver and the other is gold.

Where's my tin of gold paint...

Misc / Open / It's here!

Well, last night I saw the first flight of geese coming in to nest at nearby MArtin Mere bird sanctuary so that's a sure sign that somebody has flipped the "Autumn" switch and Winter is on it's way.

Tonight I was out and about and it was pitch black by 7.45.

What a crap Summer we've had, yet again!

Time to dig out the thermal liner for my jacket and my warm gloves...

CB500/550 / CB550F Exhaust System
« on: August 17, 2008, 08:34:51 AM »
My CB550F2 is fitted with a vey nice Marshall exhaust system.

It's very shiny and sounds very good.

I like the system however I prefer the look of the original system where the header pipes come out of the head and across the engine together.

I know there's no chance of getting an original system but would anyone be interested in swapping a Motad or something similar for my Marshall?

Here's a pic of it:

CB500/550 / Front Wheel Bearings.
« on: July 20, 2008, 07:53:04 PM »
I want to replace the front wheel bearings on my 550 but I can't remove the bearing retainer from the hub.

Does anyone have the correct tool to do it or perhaps do it for me?

Beer tokens on offer...

CB500/550 / Carb Balancing
« on: June 06, 2008, 07:53:02 AM »
I've now received my replacement vacuum adaptor so I'm finally going to balance the carbs after their stripdown.

What should I set the idle speed at to do it?

I'm sure I read somewhere that it should be a fast idle, around 1800rpm and not the standard 1200rpm.

Is this correct?

CB500/550 / Brake Squeal
« on: May 31, 2008, 08:28:18 AM »
A few weeks back I fitted new genuine Honda front brake pads to my 550 as part of the routine service.

Everything was cleaned up nicely and I coated the back of each pad with Copaslip and all was well. The pad to disc gap was set up correctly with a feeler gauge.

I've done a few hundred miles now and the pads are well bedded in but the front brake has started squealing very loudly and I sound like a no. 47 bus when I stop.

If I brake from 70 or 80 mph it doesn't happen but as the speed comes down it comes in and is there right down to when I stop. It's really loud!

Has anyone successfully cured this annoying problem?

CB500/550 / Float heights
« on: May 15, 2008, 08:22:00 AM »
Hi all.

My CB550F2 was registered in September 1978 and my Haynes manual goes up to 1977.

In said manual Mr Haynes says that the carb float height for the F model is 22mm.

I'm assuming that this will be for the the F1 model. Can anyone confirm that this is the right setting for my F2 carbs?

CB500/550 / A Pic of my CB550
« on: May 02, 2008, 08:16:00 PM »
Here's the latest pic of my CB550F2 taken this evening.

I've replaced all the bits I wanted to replace so the rest is mainly paint and cosmetic work although the carbs need pulling apart and cleaning.

I'm not looking to restore it to concours condition, I just want it to look OK and ride OK.

Tricks & Tips / Seized Brake Bleed Nipple
« on: March 29, 2008, 01:00:18 PM »
Usual problem with the front brake on my 550.

Has anyone fitted one of these? Will it fit?

It seems a good idea as I don't want to snap the existing nipple trying to remove it.
