CB350/400 / Rear Shocks
« on: March 27, 2008, 08:07:31 PM »
I don't suppose anyone has a pair of rear shocks for a 400/4 sitting in a dusty corner of their garage looking for a new home?

Interchangeability / CB 550 Shock Absorbers

My '78 CB550 has now covered the mighty mileage of 16500 miles and all seems well.

The rear suspension consisist of a pair of genuine Koni shocks with 3 position pre-load. Unfortunately these are too long and there's a big gap between the mudguard and the wheel and the wheel touches the road when it's on the main stand.

I've done some measuring and investigation and it appears that the shocks are for the SOHC 750 and 650.

The distance between the mounts is 339mm (should be 319mm) and the bottom mount is forked.

Before I do anything I thought I'd ask here first so does anyone have a good pair of 550 (or 400/4) shocks which they'd like to swap for my Koni's?

If not I'll buy a replacement pair and sell the Koni's, or put them on Ebay.

Misc / Open / Spark Plugs.
« on: January 17, 2008, 08:15:57 PM »
Hi Again.

My CB550 is fitted with the standard KGK resistor plug caps but a previous owner has also fitted resistor spark plugs which I thought weren't necessary if the resistor caps were fitted.

The bike runs fine and the plugs are a loverly colour but I'm planning to replace them when I service it soon.

I can get NGK DR7Es plugs quite easily and cheaply but the D7ES's seem a little scarce so will I be OK fitting the resistor plugs again?

My gut feeling is yes but I thought I'd check with our experts.

TIA.

CB500/550 / Sump Removal
« on: January 14, 2008, 07:07:01 PM »
Hi.

I'm about to service my 550F2 and in the Haynes Manual it says that the sump plate should be removed and the oil strainer removed and cleaned.

Is this a big job? Can it be done without removing the exhaust system? Does it involve lots of swearing?

Is it worth doing?

CB500/550 / Ignition System screws
« on: December 16, 2007, 06:27:17 PM »
All the crosshead screws securing the points, condensers and backplates on my 550 are butchered and difficult to remove.

Are these things still available from Honda or does anyone know somewhere that could supply some similar items which will do the job?

TIA,

Dave

Are there any major differences between the engine and frame on a K3 and an F2?

For example, would an aftermarket 4 into 1 system that is fitted to a K3 fit an F2?

Misc / Open / Southport Air Show.
« on: September 22, 2007, 08:05:28 AM »
This weekend is the Southport Air Show and the weather for today looks excellent (unlike tomorrow!).

I'm going to go on my bike so there'll be no worries parking.

Anyone else going?

CB500/550 / CB550F Rear Wheel
« on: September 05, 2007, 09:36:49 PM »
Hi again.

Does anybody know if the rear wheel on a CB550K3 is the same as the one on a CB550F2?

I've checked some parts lists for the K1 and the rim and hub part numbers are the same so I was wondering if the K3 was the same as well as I may have located a wheel.

Thanks,

Dave

CB500/550 / Pilot Screws
« on: August 22, 2007, 07:34:08 AM »
Hi again.

Which way do the pilot screws on the carbs on my 550 work?

Is it screw in to richen or screw out?

The manual isn't clear.

Thanks.

CB500/550 / Handlebars
« on: August 14, 2007, 09:54:50 PM »
Hi, it's me again!

Can anybody tell me whether the wiring from the handlebar switches on the CB550 were routed outside the handlebars or inside where they emerged at the front between the handlebar clamps?

Strange question I know but I don't know if my bars are standard and someone said that the wiring should be inside the bars. I don't think it should be.

Many thanks,

Also, there's no key to the steering lock.

Any easy way round this?

Key number, replacement lock?

Thanks.

CB500/550 / CB500F2 Cam Chain Adjustment
« on: July 23, 2007, 02:43:17 PM »
Hi, newbie here!

It's a few years since I had my CB750 and I'm hoping to collect my 1978 CB550F2 on Sunday.

I had a test ride yesterday and the carbs need balancing and the cam chain is rattling quietly.

I've not got a manual yet so could some kind person remind me how to tension the cam chain.

I've had a quick look and on the back of the block at the bottom there's a locknut and screw and further up there's a bolt.

I seem to remember the engine is set to 15 degrees after TDC but not sure what to do with the bolts.

Many thanks.
