CB500/550 / Wiring keep blowing relays. 550 F1
« on: June 18, 2021, 10:03:48 AM »
Hi all
I have wired the bike from scratch with little knowledge of electrics and an understanding neighbour with good electrical know how.
The problem is after 800 plus miles I have burnt out 2 relays.
We have a lithium battery and a modern reg/rec fitted and have used a distribution box. The relay is a 30amp.
The relay is fitted between the battery and distribution box using a thicker wire and the spade cover on the relay shows signs of getting hot. The second relay i bought had a fuse fitted but didn't blow when the bike died after a 80mile run.
Have I wired it correctly ?
Should there be a relay on the headlamp?

CB500/550 / points sparking 550 F1
« on: October 07, 2020, 04:51:03 PM »
Hi
After days of fiddling, my own fault using pod filters I am told, I have finally got my 1976 550 F1 running ok. Upped the main jets to 110 but left the 38 slow jets in after the 40s seemed to make matters worst. Plenty of attempts to balance carbs swop jets around and checking electrics.
I did notice a spark at the points gap on 2 and 3 none at 1 and 4.  Cleaned and checked gap but still sparking all the way through rev range. I found the old condenser and changed it for the brand new one and although the points are still sparking the performance was immediately improved with he condenser swap.
After a quick glance at the internet it seems this is acceptable for the CBs of this era.
Should I try to remedy this fault or just enjoy the last bit of riding till the winter months arrive ?

CB500/550 / Carb needles 550 F1
« on: August 29, 2020, 02:56:25 PM »
Hi all
I have cleaned and rebuilt my carbs and have had the bike running.
Because I have pod filters and 4 into 1 exhaust I am about to fit bigger jets but noticed the needles on 2 and 3 carbs are lower down in the carb than 1 and 4 where the main jet sits.
Silly question ..... is this right ?
I have gapped the slides on the bench, checked the c clips are in the right grooves, and the new needles are the correct length.

Thanks  Phil

CB500/550 / New reg/rec
« on: June 29, 2020, 10:04:37 AM »
Hi all
Anyone fitted one of these ebay reg/rec to 1976 CB550 F1 ?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Regulators-Rectifier-for-Honda-CB400F-CB550F-Super-Sport-1975-1977/143232684387?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

Bought the bike with no original electrics so working from scratch.
Electrical novice (so jumped in at deep end) but my neighbour is helping who is well versed with things electrical.
Need to know the correct connections.
Thanks in advance.

CB500/550 / rear wheel
« on: January 31, 2020, 11:04:46 AM »
Hi all
has anyone else had trouble fitting the rear wheel on their 550 F1 ? mine is really tight to fit. I have put in new wheel bearings and double checked they are seated all the way in but still need a pry bar to get the last spacer and chain adjuster to fit.

Thanks Phil

CB500/550 / right foot peg fitting cb550 F1
« on: December 05, 2019, 02:09:54 PM »
Hi all, bought bike in bits and on to fitting the right side foot peg. It seems to me that it goes between the engine and frame because the rear lower mounting bolt isn't long enough for it to fit on the outside of frame. Only problem is the gap is too narrow for the peg.
Am I missing something obvious ...wrong bolt, wrong peg (although left side is fine)

Thanks Phil

CB500/550 / 550 F1 pod air filters
« on: October 11, 2019, 05:31:10 PM »
Hi all
Probably an old topic
Looking for pod air filters to fit my 1976 550 F1
All I can find to fit are flat pancake style ones used for some small Chinese machines and quad bikes
Anyone know if these are suitable ?

CB500/550 / CbB 550 main jets
« on: May 16, 2019, 06:29:44 PM »
Hi all
Probably been asked before but when running a 4 into 1 exhaust and pod air filters what do people recommend about main jet size ? I have 4 new jets that came in kits that are marked 100.

Thanks Phil

CB500/550 / CB 550 points or electronic
« on: February 28, 2019, 01:21:04 PM »
Hi all
Engine nearly rebuilt in my 1976 project Honda cb550.
Starting to think about getting it running.
Not much good with electrics but fortunately my neighbour is !
Whats the best option, original points ignition or a new electronic system.
I have nothing except the old points, no wires relays coils switches ....nowt !
Have talked briefly with neighbour and Motogadget  was mentioned, expensive but compared to sourcing all the bits needed would it be more straight forward ?
Anybody used it, any views ?
Thanks Phil

New Member Introductions / Hello
« on: February 04, 2019, 03:33:34 PM »
Hi all
I am new to this site but had motor bikes for the last 40 plus years.
This latest one , my 1976 CB 550 F1 is a real project !
Bought for £50 its consists of a frame ,engine, both wheels, tank, forks and cafe racer seat hump, and thats it !
I am not restoring it, but probably going down the street tracker route as the rear sub frame has already been cut and there are so many parts missing, also my old back can't do the racer position for too long.
I've had a few Hondas in the past...
CB 250, early 80s
TL 125
400 Dream (the fat one)
Transalp 2006
1999 Fireblade 900
I've also had a couple of old Harleys, Buell 900, Kawasaki 750LTD, 1960 Enfield Constellation.
My current bikes are
Moto Guzzi G5 1979
Moto Guzzi SP1000 1978
and a Yamaha Diversion street tracker I did a couple of winters ago.
Anyhow off to the garage to list my bits for David Silver, and phone to see how the barrels and head are doing at the local engineering shop, (hope the wife doesn't see the bills)
Ok
Take care
Phil

CB500/550 / rocker cover swap 550
« on: February 04, 2019, 11:42:01 AM »
Hi, is it ok to swap a later model rocker cover (4 shafts) to an earlier one (8 shafts) ?
If so how are the 8 shafts secured ?

Thanks in advance Phil
