Title: CB550F 1975 front indicator wiring
Post by: Plammiman on December 09, 2023, 10:15:21 AM
I’m trying to figure out my front indicator wiring which has been modified and get it back to standard. The wiring diagrams show three wires at the indicator. For example the left indicator wiring is Orange, Orange and White, Green.  The Green is OK I can see the path back to earth through the chassis and head light bolts, then back to the green in the headlight bucket. The indicator light assembly I have and all the ones I have looked at have a single black wire. Which is power to the lamp and the lamp earths through the chassis. Are there lamp assemblies with a three wire connection?

I don't know, but did US models have the indicators permanently lit?

See if you have a UK wiring diagram,

But I could be totally wrong

If you want it 'back to standard', you need to pinpoint what exact model you have by comparing frame- and enginenumber of yours to those listed in the various CB550F partslists which are all here: https://www.honda4fun.com/materiale/documentazione-tecnica Note that the 'year' is irrelevant. If you do the effort - and you only have to do it once - to pinpoint what exact model you have, you'll have access to the appopiate info and you can save yourself the frustration I've had for decades.
By identifying your bike, you will also learn the 'area code' and so you will learn that Honda had different wiring diagrams for different markets. Just disciplin yourself once and you can't go wrong.

Connect the single black to straight orange or straight blue depending on side, the white stipe wires are for the US running lights which need twin filament bulbs and fitings and are not legal in UK anyway

There's only one Manchester team,  they play in red!

Thanks for the replies. My bike is a US import and hence the running lights and circuit. Thanks for the pointers on what to wire and what to leave off with standard indicators.  No headlight switch either, but that’s not a problem as I like it on anyway.

The appropiate wiring diagram for your model, the CB550F-A is in the CB550F-A Addendum, p.169 in the Shop Manual Honda CB500-550: https://www.dropbox.com/s/lirtu1euydi0rol/Honda%20CB500_CB550%20%20Four%20Service%20Manual%20Ammended.pdf?dl=0
