Title: Guy Martin Book
Post by: martin_uk on January 03, 2015, 09:00:49 PM
My son bought me this for Xmas and just finished reading and would recommend.

Quite alot of detailed racing info, but his background and motivation is interesting.

I enjoyed his Speed series and loved the short with Merlin engine and the Spitfire build.

I wondered how much the engine would have cost and in book he says paid £35k

The book helps explain the reasons behind his behaviour and found the bit about his inner chimp (rash behaviour) quite interesting.

It comes across as quite  honest, as he readily admits many of his shortcomings.

Interesting comments, I read it before Christmas and thought it very dull, TBQH. I have it here if anybody wants it. Guy is clearly a nice bloke and the early chapters deal with him growing up - as a nice lad from a normal family. Then onto his racing successes, always slightly tempered due to his lack of TT success; we all know how much he wants it. The tv work is the best bit, but I've read much better books about racing and racers
I'd heartily recommend, though, Leanings, an anthology of articles by Peter Egan, either volume; my favourite journo. Also, if you can find a copy of ' a million miles ago' by Neale Shilton. One of the very best motorcycling books I've ever read, he was chief salesman for Triumph and rode to virtually every show, before going on to commission and flog the police SAINT, Interpol, BMW and Norton Rotary bikes. Fascinating stuff.
Cheers

Paul, if you don't mind, we could send it around with the recipient paying the postage?

Me first

Deffo steve, you're speaking about the Guy Martin book, right?  If you pm me your address I'll stick it in the post to you. Stick the stamp value in a cancer research or air ambulance box and we're quits. The Neale Shilton book is out of print, I'd borrowed it to read and really didn't want to give it back!
Cheers

Yep. The Guy Martin book. I was looking at it in Smiths on Saturday, thinking I'd maybe get a copy if/when it goes in the "half-price" section...

This isn't going to be a fast relay, but would anyone like it after me?

I bought his latest "When you dead, you dead" autobiography for myself for xmas.Having gone to the TT 3 yrs running (on a Triumph Bonneville,CB750 Phil Read Replica and a Triumph Tiger 800)hoping to see Guy notch up a TT win,I doubt he'll try again. The bit in his book about the 'inner chimp' was very true and his theory on cheap beer and football stopping the masses from revolting might hold water. The book is in the bargain bucket so you'll probuably get a copy for the price of Classic Bike magazine...
