CB500/550 / 550 Heading North
« on: August 25, 2020, 03:49:09 PM »
[ Guests cannot view attachments ]

All loaded up and ready to depart my 550 is off to a new home at the weekend.  I will be sad to see it go, but that leaves a gap in the garage for another project for the coming winter.  I haven't got a clue what that might be yet, but I do fancy a CB250RS single.

Believe it or not myself and wife #1  went to Sicily and back on one in the early 1980's, the little bike never missed a beat.

What is it? / Whats it off?
« on: August 05, 2020, 07:34:31 AM »
As per the heading this is not so much a what is it?   Its clearly a rear mudguard.

I bought it for my 550 F2 as the chrome is excellent and the frame fittings are correct, however my rear light/licence plate holder has a 4 bolt fixing (two top and two bottom) whereas this piece only has three.   I'm assuming its still for a 550, but perhaps a different model with a different rear light bracket set up. I could drill it to suit of course but that would probably damage the chrome. Does anyone know which bike its off?

Where's My Old Bike? / MBT728T Honda CB750 F2
« on: July 27, 2020, 03:14:54 PM »
Well, as I alluded to elsewhere, a sift through some old photos revealed my first CB750 F2 was registered as MBT728T.   Sadly from what I can tell, it hasn't been taxed since 1989, so has probably gone to the scrap yard years ago, but you never know.   I do recall I sold it in part exchange for my Honda CBX at Eddys on Kirkstall Road in Leeds.

The photo is during a trip to the Lake District, I guess in 1978 or early 1979.

Does anyone have any more up to date info on it?

Where's My Old Bike? / MJX99T Honda CBX
« on: July 25, 2020, 08:26:56 PM »
According to the records, its not been taxed since 1993 and its changed colour.  It was Silver when I owned it, its recorded as Red now.  Thats if it still exists  :(
has anyone come across it or own it?

Other Bikes / Honda VFR800 Pre V Tech
« on: July 25, 2020, 06:37:03 PM »
I'm looking at the above with a view to getting one as a winter hack bike.  I actually owned one myself about 15 years ago and I recall it was a great all rounder and relatively bulletproof in most areas, but none of them are getting any younger (just like our beloved SOHC models) so I was wondering if anyone who has one now and has perhaps owned it for several years can give me any pointers?  I know the exhaust collector is a rusting point and hence possible problem area, but is there anything else I should be looking for specifically on these bikes?  Someone mentioned rectifiers as another potential weak spot.  Thanks

What is it? / What bike is this tacho off?
« on: June 29, 2020, 11:02:05 AM »
As per thread heading I've got this ND tacho, but I've no idea what model of bike its off.  I assume its a SOHC Honda but perhaps you knowlegable souls can enlighten me further?

CB500/550 / Speedo needle excessive movement
« on: June 18, 2020, 12:03:32 PM »
I think I might be being a bit over dramatic with the thread heading, but the speedo needle on my bike does flap about usually in the 40 - 80 mph region by about + or - 5 mph.  I've had a look at the drive cable innards and they don't look excessively worn, but I suppose there could be some wear on the end of the cable where it fits into the socket on the front wheel.

I'm not overly concerned with the issue, could it be wear and tear inside the instrument head itself?   I suppose after 40 odd years there will be some.  I was wondering if there was a quick fix or would it a need an overhaul of the speedo head itself?  Prior to owning this 550, I haven't had a SOHC Honda 4 for about 30 years and I seem to remember the ones I had back then did the same, so am I just fussing about nothing?

CB500/550 / Decent quality aftermarket mirrors
« on: June 08, 2020, 06:53:12 PM »
As per title, I bought some chrome backed mirrors for the 550 cheap off fleabay.  They are OK I suppose, they look decent enough, but suffer from the dreaded blurr once you get above about 3000 rpm.  They are also quite small in diameter (100mm) compared to the ones I got with the bike (115mm)  when I bought it.  Has anyone found a decent replacement mirror supplier with products that don't break the bank and (perhaps) you can see behind with at speed?

CB500/550 / Rear shocks
« on: June 06, 2020, 01:11:09 PM »
As its blowing a gale and chucking it down here,  :'(  I've retreated into the garage for the day and swapped over the black aftermarket rear shocks which the bike had on when I bought it, for these Chrome replicas I bought about a year ago,  but never got around to fitting.   They look pretty good though I do say so myself.

CB500/550 / Carburettor Jet rubber seals
« on: June 05, 2020, 07:20:08 PM »
After playing around with float heights and finding I had a small crack in one of the carb float bowl brass overflow tubes, I thought I'd sorted my fuel leak issues but alas after a short ride last week, there was a tell tale pool of fuel underneath the bike.  :(.   Determined to get it sorted once and for all, I bought a set of new O ring seals from Julie (Nurse Julie) on here and I'm pleased to say after an afternoon in the garage with the carbs off (yet again!) they seem to have sorted the issue.   I have to say the old ones virtually fell apart as I prised them off,  they definitely needed replacing.   So a quick vote of thanks from me to Julie for sending  the replacements so quickly and I will take the bike for a much longer ride over the weekend (weather permitting) to make sure everything is now hunky dory.  I do need to balance the carbs again, but they don't seem to be too far out according to my short test ride this evening.  The moral of the story I guess is if you have the carbs apart doing other work and you don't know when the seals were last renewed, change them anyway.

Misc / Open / What is this?
« on: June 01, 2020, 01:45:54 PM »
One of those grey boxes at the side of the road.  This particular one is a couple of miles from my house, the road is a A165.  I've passed it many times and wondered what it was for.  There is a small solar panel on the top and the whole thing is no more than 3 feet high.  I'm assuming its a traffic counter, but I really don't know hence the question.  Are any of our members Grey box experts??

CB500/550 / Keys
« on: May 16, 2020, 07:49:57 AM »
After 40 odd years, the Ignition Key on my bike is getting rather thin and worn and is a little bent.  I'm worried it might break and I only have the one.  As you know, it works not just the Ignition but the filler flap and the seat lock on my 550F.    I'm therefore looking to get at least one, possibly two replacements.  I could probably go down to the local Mr Minute Key cutters (If it was open, which I doubt at the moment due to COVID)and get something which would do the job, but I was wondering if someone can point me in the right direction to get new keys that look like the original.  There is a guy selling numbered Honda keys on fleabay currently, but of course mine isn't among the numbers he has on offer. I also tried Dave Silvers site, but the number I require isn't listed there either.  Its 820 by the way.

Thanks

CB500/550 / Front brake - Annual overhaul
« on: April 10, 2020, 02:35:45 PM »
Moving the bike round in the garage recently I noticed the front brake was binding.  I removed the pin on the pivot arm a couple of months ago so I knew it was unlikely to be an issue with that, so I stripped down the calliper this morning and sure enough the piston was seized, so a quick rub over with some fine emery on the pad periphery and a clean up of the piston itself and all is well again.  Probably not this year (especially if we don't get out at all due to COVID19! )but next winter,  I'll be needing some new pads for the old girl.   Your opinions on what replacements to fit would be very welcome as the front brake does seem pretty rubbish especially when I've just got off one of my more modern bikes.  I've tended to buy EBC in the past, but if there's better material to use I'm all ears.
