Title: What colour
Post by: AndyD on July 26, 2019, 06:26:06 PM
OK, first question on the 400/4 restoration if anyone can help please.
I'm trying to sort out what colour / scheme the bike should be.
The bike is a 'P' reg August 1975 on the log book and this says colour is red.
Attached photo shows the current tank (no idea how the paint ended up this way!) and looks a bit purplish rather than red on the undamaged areas.
As the bike has had a hard life this may well be non original tank or paint scheme so I wondered if anyone can advise what the correct colour / scheme should be for this year of bike.
Cheers,
Andy

That's the F2 red- candy antares red.  You want the F1 red.  Can't think what it's called but the post office use it on their vehicles.

A 75 should be light ruby red or varnish blue with matching side panels.

Brilliant - thanks for the quick replies.
That's the colour scheme I remember from years ago when a friend had a blue one.
Also saw one yesterday at the Harpenden classic show we popped in to briefly and looked good so that's what I'll go for.
Cheers,
Andy

If you need all the deals (bloody predictive text....DECALS 🤔), our forum member and sponsor Piki...real name Diego (Redice decals) does them and they are spot on....good price too.

Hi all, hoping it's ok to tag onto this thread as my question is linked to AndyD's original one.

The photo is of my '77 400F as it was when i bought it, resplendent in it's turquoise tank and black side panels.  I can't find any trace of original paint, and the V5 says it's silver!  As I understand it the options would have been the same as AndyD's machine - light ruby red or varnish blue.  Is there a way to trace what the original colour would have been from the frame number or other method?

Regards, Darren.

Yours being a 77 F2 would have only been available in Candy Antares Red or Parakeet Yellow, they were the only 2 colours. . Andys bike is much earlier than yours, so his was either Light Ruby Red or Varnish blue. They were the only 2 colours on the F models . I don't think Honda UK have the info on original colours but possibly, it may be worth you contacting them. . There is no way to find the colour from the VIN number, other than it being an F2 in the Antares or the Parakeet.

I've used the Honda contact page a few times. Provide them with the model and frame number, explain you want the colour for a restoration project. I've always had a reply with the colour code in less than two weeks.

Well done John. The only stumbling block I can think of is that it looks to be a USA import (going by the chrome tail light bracket) and I don't know if Honda UK have access to the USA details 🤔

Could be right there Julie, never tried it for an import.

Thank you, but confused sorry - the frame number starts with a 1 so my understanding was that makes it an F model?

If its a 1st registered UK bike, the VIN will start with a 1 making it a F2 model. This would tie in with you saying its a 1977. If you look at the VIN sheet that Deano posted, it shows it on there. Let's start off by establishing if it is a 1st registered UK bike, or an import. ( I suggested last night it could be an import due to the incorrect tail light bracket being fitted but that means nothing really).
If your VIN is in the range 1073400-1088559 it's defo a UK F2.

OK. So according to your VIN, yours is a UK model and an F, which is what you said but you also said its a 1977, which it can't be, unless it was a very, very late registered bike, which would have been almost unheard of for a 400/4.

It's an R reg, and the V5 says date of 1st registration is 01/02/1977.  It seems the bike is suffering more of an identity crisis than I first thought!

From the numbers it does look like a very late F. Use the link I posted and see what the colour comes back as. I'd expect Ruby Red or Varnish Blue. It would make it more puzzling if it came back Parakeet Yellow or Candy Antares Red!

Yes, please let us know the outcome.

FWIW, the '77 USA bikes all had the forward-placed foot pegs and shift lever attached directly to the shaft - see attached.  Yours appears to have a "rear-set" foot peg, and the shifting linkage, so it's not likely to be a USA model...

Had a reply from Honda Customer Service on Friday saying the original colour code was R-25, which I believe is Light Ruby Red, so that's the colour I'll be going with.  Thanks again everyone for the advice.

I've finished my '77 reg 400F in the current Honda Milano Red which is a very close match to the original Light Ruby Red.

[attach=1]

I had the same confusion over was it it an F or F2 as it was first registered on 30th March 1977, but the frame/engine numbers are within the 400F UK range. I guess it was loitering in a showroom for a while.

Hi Dave

That looks nice and thanks for sharing the paint code

Planning to restore my tank and side panels over the winter so looks like I have found the ideal colour match as current red is a bit more brighter
