It's clearly not my day today.

Well, came to fit the oil seal in the retainer and it does not want to fit - it clearly is the right size as it looks as it will fit the old retainer just fine when I tentatively part fitted it!
I dont want to risk damaging the seal trying to make it fit so I am sending the retainer back to DS for replacement.

That's put me back a few days now - I am going to return the DS retainer ring part in the hope that a replacement one is from the new production batch.

Just a bit of an update and to give credit to Vince Goosey at this firm who I bought my lock ring tool from back in May 2023. www.gbmotorcycleproducts.com

I today received f.o.c. a set of four pins to replace the ones in my tool that fits the poorly made replica part supplied my DS.
That's what I call customer service.

I decided against sending my lock ring back to DS for them to change it as they were not prepared to do so until the faulty part was back with them to compare- clearly they still have the faulty ones left on the shelf. I did not want to take the risk of them sending the same part out again not to mention the time delay.

Clearly DS knew there was an issue with a batch of their lock rings - they could have sent me a replacement that I would have paid for on the basis of a refund on the returned part. This was an opportunity for them to give better customer experience that they missed.

This morning I tightened up the lock ring with the new pins fitted to the tool.

On both my 400 & 500 I could rotate the crank by hand easily using the alternator rotor as a grip point.

It probably depends on your grip strength in my case it was not as easy with the pistons in place though it was easy to rock it through what I call the null pont.

When you assembled the crankcase halves is it possible that an excess of Hondabond could have entered somewhere to lead to this problem? Could the crank seals be somehow causing the extra binding if they have distorted?

I'm assuming you have not fitted the block yet.

I think you will have to split the cases again to investigate further.

A bit of a head scratcher - not trying do doubt your ability - are you sure when you fitted  the main shells in the correct  main bearing positions as number 1 main is then on your right when inverted.

Even so a tight clearance shell should not make it so resistant to rotation.

Does the crank have that free movement feel if you make a very small rocking action with the crank?

Do you have any doubts that the crankcase halves were a factory pair?

Oddly enough I was talking to a mate today whose niece has been left with no sense of smell or taste having since been told it's  long Covid related that was alleged to have been confirmed by a blood test at a Bristol Hospital.
He had heard of other folk with your experience as regards Nicotine helping - as you state weird.
I did not know there was some sort of test that can detect Long Covid.

Are you refering to the short bushes that used to be plastic (Julies are Brass) or the long Center Collar shown in the parts book diagram as item 13 p/n 52141-300-000 a hefty £103.22  from DS?
