CB500/550 / Selling CB500/4 K2 1972 Gold
« on: March 17, 2024, 12:18:08 PM »
Hi all, after 10 years of ownership I have reluctantly decided to sell.
I had a 500/4 from 1974 to 1978, and this bike, imported from Italy in 2003 has brought me much satisfaction, not least in the form of enormous help from this forum, as well as the usual admiring comments from people at shows like Brooklands etc. My last long run was to Sammy Millers, 81 miles each way.
The 1 & 2 carbs initially leaked after the bike was left for 2 months but it was just the float valves sticking, and after draining and refilling the 2 bowls, now all good. Ideally the carbs might benefit from a proper rebuild, although I have cleaned jets etc. The bike is not like new showroom but is very presentable and most importantly rides very well, pulling cleanly from low revs and changes gear sweetly.
The OEM pipes are very good and only 4# has a tiny almost invisible mark at the angle of the trumpet end.
I have carried out loads of work, including:
New DS headlight. Front brake caliper, hoses and master, and disc shroud. New clocks. New matching 3 locks with 2 keys. NOS original paint tank, POR-15 lined. New fuel tap. New coils. New used points plate and cam. Low miles TT100 tyres. New front wheel bearings. New correct pattern seat cover. Superb Hondaman transistorised ignition. New clutch rod and cable. New clutch rod and gearshift seals. New 5 oil pump seals (no drips bone dry). New chain. Motobatt AGM battery. Engine bars. New throttle cable. Smooth throttle and clutch. Correct repro tool kit in tray. Fuse and holder in tray. Owners manual and Haynes manual plus some spares.
I think it is worth £6k or so.
Any viewing welcome in Cobham, Surrey.

Maybe a nice neighbour or bike club member has space in their nice warm garage?!

Re the height of batteries, I think some, maybe my Motobatt AGM, (which has proved excellent) had a section that can be removed making it less tall. I didn’t spot it initially when struggling to fit it.

Member 4 Sales / Chain 98 link o ring with split link
« on: September 16, 2023, 07:36:39 AM »
I have this for sale on eBay which I’m happy to give free to a forum member, just for postage cost about £5.50 tbc.
It’s 25mm wide which was rubbing on the engine casing, so only useable if you are sure it will suit your bike. It may need o rings for the split link but didn’t have when fitted to my bike, and may not be essential.
It appears to be nice and tight, pivots well, and no sideways flex or sloppiness.

Yes, and wrong speedo (and seat cover, unless US were different)!

Good point, I read it as the ones fitted as it had been an unfinished project.

Mine were much easier when I stretched them a little, plus some grease

Many thanks Ted. I was thinking of vinegar as well.
Trigger and Delta all noted. I’ve done a fair bit to them all and agreed. This is the only real issue now and I may need to repeat with 1&2, and fuel flow I’ve sorted. If the polishing doesn’t work a full rebuild will be on the cards.

Noted many thanks. I think I’ve worked out what the main issue is with mine. I had tested the float valves and they seemed good, and each bowl reaches 50ml, so I couldn’t understand why the fuel was reaching the bowl joints.
I think it’s because (on #3 & #4) the float pivot is binding very slightly on the brass rod. As it’s only 3&4, I’m going to try polishing those - the rod and the tubes it passes through, with very fine polishing paste, to get rid of any resistance. I’ll do the same with the gasket mating surfaces, and then test.

CB500/550 / Carb rebuild service?
« on: August 15, 2023, 05:49:27 PM »
Hi, after in-situ cleaning, jet cleaning, fitting new correct float bowl seals etc, finding a float bowl screw seat thread stripped, and still leaking, I’m finally considering having them properly refurbished. Can anyone recommend a reliable tested service?
Advice appreciated as always.

CB500/550 / Re: Float bowl gaskets
« on: May 28, 2023, 02:29:12 PM »
Yes that surprised me too, but I think the float valves may have stuck slightly, and fuel rose up and came gushing out from the bowl seal joints. I think maybe the Neoprene seals shrink when there is less fuel vapour around after being drained for a while, so not being submerged is not the factor. Or maybe the seals get wet and stay swollen with fuel sloshing around when the bike is ridden regularly.

I measured the fuel after doing the job and all still the correct volume once everything was functioning correctly. I wonder if the overflow outlets are above the bowl joints. AOK after dropping the bowls and fitting Viton seals. Good call I’ll leave it wet next winter, might run them off and refill before starting or better still try and ride her every 3 weeks or so

And…….oh I wish I had a bike lift…..😢

CB500/550 / Float bowl gaskets
« on: May 27, 2023, 06:57:34 PM »
This will be on a past post somewhere but I thought I would share it in case useful. I left my carbs dry for a month or two in the winter, and when I came to use the bike again, they flooded from the bowl joints. I had bought the shaped gaskets about three years ago, possibly from the USA, and I think they must’ve shrunk when dry due to being Neoprene. I bought the round quality Viton ones from Julie (thank you Julie) and to sit them neatly in the groove, all I had to do was very gently stretch them a tiny amount and they sat perfectly. Happy days.

It would be good if Peter Horton could make up sets. If not, I was quite happy with the Z1 USA one. (I think it was in a batch of items I brought back on a trip a few years ago) I could have slid the slightly short sleeve a bit nearer the bulb end and added tape to the connector end but it still looks pretty good.
