Bet this post gets a few views. I'm after nudes. The bikes, people, the bikes!! In putting bits back on my bike I've realised there are very few pics around that show where stuff is supposed to go. Particularly interested in things like the wiring loom, bracket orientation, hoses and tubes etc.
Could someone point me at a (SFW) location for pics of a CB400F without the tank, seat and side panels on please?
-
Your best bet is to use the microfiches on the CMSNL website. Photos are difficult to find on Tinternet and even if you do find any, there is no guarantee the owner has fitted the parts in the correct location or orientation.
Here is a link to the CB400/4 F2 fiche, there is one also for the earlier model
https://www.cmsnl.com/honda-cb400f2-england_model14647/partslist/#.XBeIkdv7TIU
Edit.....if there are any specific parts / areas i can help you with in the way of photos, just shout. The bike is indoor here so i can photograph some bits but, there is still no guarantee i have put all the bits in the correct places either (as him indoor regularly reminds me !!!) ::) ::) ::)

I might be able to help later this week, if pics of a dirty '77 USA spec would be of interest. Mine is in storage next door, in tight quarters, but I was hoping to gain access to check a few things anyway. If I can manage it, I'll take a round of snaps. As Nurse Julie says, though, no promises about whether things are where they should be...
-
Thanks both, yes please, I'll take you up on the offer!
My direct problem is that my wee little beastie has been in bits several times over her time on Earth and I think the last 'restoration' was done by someone with less mechanical sympathy than I appear to be displaying. Example, when I took the air filter box apart I carefully took pics so I knew which bolts came from where. When I put it back together, I worked out that the short bolts were in the long holes and vice versa.
So knowing where things 'should' be is kind of necessary at this stage. The Haynes book is sometimes good, the odd unexpected page where I can see the bit in the background is useful. But to have a proper colour zoomable pic would be fantastic. :)
-
Ok, when you are ready just let us know what you need and we will get snapping.
-
+1 - if you have any requests, speak up. Otherwise I'll just "grab" what I can. Only please don't be disappointed if I can't deliver, I may not have the light or the room to take decent photos...

Hi Sprocket,
I've stripped my Honda down over this year and took a picture or two.
I'm more than happy to send them all to you on a CD. They prove useful.
PM your address and i'll post.

That is a lovely offer I'd like to take you up on, but would you believe I don't have anywhere I can shove a CD now! I could reimburse you for a USB stick - but I appreciate the level of effort is an order of magnitude more and I'll accept a short "no." to the suggestion!

See how the "evolution" of modern technology is helping?
waffey, might you be able to dump them into a dropbox storage folder, or google photos, or some other such, for viewing or download? I wouldn't mind taking a look myself, and they might be helpful to many more...

I'll see what I can do, I have a drop box account :D

Agree they would certainly be helpful to me when it comes to doing my 75 400..
Mine is basically complete but there are plenty of issues that look like previous owners have botched etc so any photos etc would be much appreciated.
When I get to pulling mine down I will certainly be taking lots of pics and will be happy to share as well.

Yep, works fine
-
The photos show up fine but they are low resolution and relatively small as it looks like that site is more used for having prints done or calendars etc..
I am not sure you would be able to get much detail from any of those pics to assist in assembly etc.
Nice to see the progression though :)

I was trying to use dropbox but failed :-[. I'll have another go over the weekend

I have found with Dropbox that you are better off adding a few pics at a time, depending on their size. The other way is to add them to your dropbox folder on the computer and then wait for it to sync.. but that can take a while as well.
There is also Google Photos... you can store your pics on there and just create an album.. then you can share that album. That might be the easiest way.. then you also get a Cloud backup of your pics :)
I have an Album on mine with pics and other stuff I have been saving on my CB400. This is the link.. see what you think of this method.

Quick and easy for anyone with the link to download the whole lot, too - great for the rest of us if you want to share, but something to consider if you want to keep a tight rein on your snaps...
-
Yep, I will remove certain pics from that album, mainly the receipt lol.
You can share it with specific people but for what we are talking about I think it is possibly the best way to share hi res pics on our projects.

Ok, here's 26 hi-rez pics. As a reminder, it's a '77 USA spec. When I was with the bike, I was thinking that you were primarily interested in wiring - looking back now, I see you were interested in brackets and hoses and tubes as well. So these may be lacking. Anyway, most of the hoses are out of place since my carbs and airbox are off the bike, as is my front brake system. Hope they help; you didn't specify any particular items you wanted...
The dropbox link will bring you to a folder, which you can download all at once - you'll get a .zip file of about 44Mb. Or view and download individual pics.
They're basically front, left side, right side, and top. I took a few angles of the left side ones, especially the electrics behind the left side cover...

Thanks Mattsz, interesting photo of the cable retaining bracket located under the rubber tank bung at the headstock. I wondered at the orientation of this as the manual does not show it properly and now I know 👍.

My work here is done, then! ;D
-
Superb work, thank you very much! ;D

Did I miss anything?
-
I reckon I can put mine back together with that little lot. Seems like I'm missing a shi*load of brackets for the loom to go through, so I'm going to catalogue them tonight and put an order in before I connect much more.
Super helpful, thanks again.

Most of the loom fixings are actually part of the frame, ie, tabs etc welded to the frame so don't have a part number as cannot be purchased separately 😭

Some of my frame tabs are missing, probably snapped off by heavy handed owners over the years. 😕 Other fixings are available! 😊

Can I trouble some kind person or nurse for a photo of camchain tensioner adjusters on out side of engine.i think I have a broken/snapped bolt .many thanks Paul
-
Paul. Mine is a bugger to photograph as the engine crash bars are in the way but photo 1 is the best i can do and photo 2 was when i was rebuilding the engine.[attachimg=1][attachimg=2]
-
And here us what all the bits should look like
[attachimg=1]
-
Thanks.i think mine is wrong.i will try to upload photo for comments and advice.i don’t want to split cases unless 100% necessary.i have had trouble uploading photos before.so bear with me and thank you and happy new year

I see what you mean, it's definitely not right and has been bodged by the looks of it. That bent bolt at the top isn't correct at all.
-
I thought it was not correct.it looks like a snapped off bolt shaft in lower hole,is that were the tensioner adjuster bolt should be?
-
Yes it is Paul.
-
This may help but you have probably seen it before
-
In fact Paul, if you have a very close look in that hole where the adjuster bolt goes, it may be OK. It is funny bolt with 2 different sizes on the same bolt, thinner at the inside end. You would need to get the correct bolt and see what happens when you fit it. Unfortunately, that still wont enlighten you as to what else has been broken or bodged inside.
-
In the hole is a broken stud bolt.however the cam chain is nice and tight.the top hole is properly threaded and the bolt in the photo fits perfect-just no idea what it is supposed to do?
-
I would guess it is being used to force the adjuster plunger in and over tension the camcahain
-
If you look at the picture above, the bolt you have fitted is No.11 (although the bolt you have fitted in there is totally the wrong bolt), it is just a bolt with a seal, it serves no other purpose. But as Bryan says, it looks like someone has fitted the incorrect bolt there to push the plunger down to give tention to the chain via the mechanism. This would suggest a very knackered camchain with loads if play that needed taking up.
-
Stripped engine down to crank.plunger etc was fine but at min compression as locking bolt broken.had to drill out locking bolt, probably have to recap hole and hope I can fix.thanks for all help etc.Paul

Back to wiring looms, brackets and tabs (oh my!)...
The twisted metal tab tacked to the cross member under the seat:
[attach=1]
It's kind of hard to see in this photo, it's been smooshed down by the seat. I assume that's the "wire clip" mentioned on page 17, step 50, in the dealer setup instructions? It seems pretty big to hold just a few wires, and anyway the right side doesn't have one (the helmet holder is there). It's very flimsy, and feels like it will break right off if I twisted it back into position.
Do I have it right?
EDIT: not sure why sometimes my thumbnails appear sideways - but a click on the photo to zoom in shows it up-side-up...
-
Mine looks like yours Matt[attachimg=1]

Mine looks like yours Matt
Only cleaner, the right shape, and corralling a much neater bundle of wires...
-
The tab is flexible but quite strong. I have just bent mine out straight and back up again, all ok.

When you take a picture on a phone, it automatIcally shows it the correct way up. If you view it on a phone (via TapaTalk for example), The same happens.
If you view the post on a PC it is not auto rotated.
Just shows that phones are cleverer than PCs

Still don't know why the thumbnail show sideways but the high-res version shows correct - on the PC... not like knowing the answer would help! :D

These diagrams may help people with cable and hose routings. They are clearer than some of the manual photos or diagrams.
They are from the instructions included in the 400/4 model kit! 🏍👍

I looked on line, and saw a number of them by that model maker... but I only saw the red color scheme. Interesting...

Maybe we could persuade Menno to scale down a bit.
