CB500/550 / Cylinder base gasket removal.
« on: January 15, 2013, 11:39:40 PM »

Way back in June last year, andy_c asked if anyone had any advice on removing a cylinder base gasket but nobody seems to have offered a solution.
I've got the same problem on my 350/4 - it's as though the gasket is part of the block, it's so hard and difficult to remove.
I suppose it's been baked on.
I'm tempted to leave it in place, but would kick myself for not having tried to get it off if there were any leaks after I'd got it all back together.  I've tried a really sharp chisel, but it's ball-achingly slow and there's the risk of scoring the base of the barrel.
Can anybody help please ?

CB350/400 / Disc lock
« on: January 10, 2013, 12:18:04 AM »

Can anybody out there recommend a lock for the front disc on my 350Four?  Hauling the conventional lock and chain around is a bit of a chore !

CB500/550 / Rough running
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:52:17 AM »

I'd be glad of some help in curing the rough running on my 550K3.
After a rebuild 12 months ago, she never really ran sweetly and was too big for comfort so I pushed her to the back of the garage and concentrated on a 350Four.  The 350 is now up and running and is a joy to ride (me being only 5'5" and 70+ years old) but the 550 deserves to be enjoyed by someone out there as it's potentially a nice bike.
So, having had the carbs checked over and with new jets and air screws in, there was a definate improvement but still an
infuriating habit of only running/pulling with the choke out.
Timing was suspect, so I took off the camshaft cover today but found all the marks to be in the right places.
Next, I re-set all the tappet clearances and on start-up, she ran as sweet as a nut - never heard her so good.  I thought I'd
cracked it, but when I took her out on the road, she'd still only run with the choke out.
Patience is running a bit thin now, so can one of you more knowlegable guys out there offer any solutions please.
(And for Gawd's sake, don't say take the carbs off, because I think I'd lose the will to live !)

CB500/550 / 550 Centrestand
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:38:10 AM »

Just put my 550K3 back on the road after zero miles this year (been too busy with the 350Four) but find that the chain is trying to wear a hole in the centrestand when the bike's in motion.

Problem lies with the fact that it's got a 4-into-1 Motad setup and there's no provision for any sort of rubber stopper to
park the stand against when it's in the 'up' position.

Anyone got any suggestions as to a cure please ?

CB350/400 / Speedo/tacho needle removal
« on: December 30, 2011, 11:19:49 AM »

I'm in the process of applying new vinyl overlays to speedo and tacho faces on my 350F1 and have taken off one of the bezels, using a Dremel type drill.  As if that wasn't daunting enough (had to bear in mind that they were going to go back on and not look as though they'd been attacked with a cold chisel)  -  I'm now stumped with the problem of getting the needle off.

Anyone any useful hints please?

CB350/400 / Front forks
« on: November 28, 2011, 07:05:17 PM »

Hi
I'm dismantling the front forks on my recently aquired CB350F  (The 550's too big !)  and wonder whether anyone
could give me some pointers on removing the bottom case covers (The chrome shiny bits.)  Don't want to go in
like a bull at a gate.

CB500/550 / CB550 Rebuild running rough.
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:44:21 PM »
Hi All  -  Some weeks/months since I posted but rebuild now within spitting distance of booking an MOT.  Only trouble is, when I fired her up for the first time 2 days ago, she wouldn't rev below about 4k. (This old girl hasn't run since 1992 !)  Looked on the Forum for stuff I'd seen previuously on Carbs and decided the slow running jets needed cleaning.  Boy, did they need cleaning !!  They were absolutely solid for over half their length so I acted on Forum advice and used my modelling drills to clear them.  (I build etched brass loco kits as a hobby  -  or used to until the 550 came along !)  Anyway, re-assembled, fiddled the carbs back on and fired up again to-day.  Result  -  will run at tickover but only on 2 pots.  Immediate thoughts were  -  coil or condenser,  but the pots not firing are nos.1 and 3, so I assume it's not electrical.  Has anyone any ideas where I might look for a solution please ?   Oh, there's a nice fat spark at the cylinders that have cold exhaust pipes by the way.
I've tried to post a pic of the bike, but it's too big and I don't have the IT skills to compress it, even with the help of Google and the various free sites out there !  I'll get there eventually.
Any help much appreciated as the summer's tickin' away and it's a long time since I was on the road on 2 wheels !

Hi All
I'm Dave from Stockport.  'Oldbuthopeful' refers to the fact that I'm old enough to have ridden a 650 Ariel twin at 90mph on an 'A' road with cap turned back-to-front and not broken the law.  I was 17 at the time !   The 'hopeful' bit is about getting the CB550K3 I'm building onto the road this summer.  Well..........we all have to have a dream !
My wife thinks I'm slightly bonkers, building a bike at my age but, not having had a bike for many years, I decided last December to buy a job lot on Ebay and have a final fling. It was done on a bit of an impulse  -  I've never had a 'four' or even ridden one but it's a bit like climbing mountains,  you don't have to have a reason to do these things, you just do them because they're there and anyway, time's running out !
So this box of bits is coming together quite nicely  -  wheels rebuilt, forks re-chromed, many weeks pocket money spent with Dave Silvers and all being assembled onto a frame that one of the PO's had had powder coated. He'd obviously started the rebuild -  yokes, swingarm, airbox, fuses, loom etc all fitted but I've come to a dead stop because I can't get the back wheel complete with spindle, chain adjusters, collars etc to go into the open swingarm fork ends.  I need another 10mm or so in width and am beginning to think the cut-down bobbin spacer in with all the other bits must have been some PO's answer to the problem.  Trouble is, if I use that instead of the new bobbin I  bought, the wheel appears to be slightly offset to the right.  Any help from you guys out there would be greatly appreciated.
Good job I can keep stroking the re-sprayed tank and the new seat !!
