CB500/550 / Re: Rough running
« on: August 19, 2012, 12:09:49 AM »

I thought of you today mickwinf, as I took the carbs off for the umpteenth time, but it's coming down to 30 mins after all the practice so,  within a couple of hours, I'd checked the slow running jets (all clear) and the float heights  -  needed a bit of a tweak  -  but what's with the emulsifying jets Oddjob ?  I pulled out the two little brass tubes at the mouth of each of the inlet ports, expecting to see tubes with lots of little holes in.  Am I looking at the wrong tubes?  These were only about 10mm long and didn't have any lateral holes.  Maybe I've misunderstood !
Anyway, I put the whole shebang back together, fired her up and, when she was warm there was a significant improvement.
On the road, there was a bit of hesitancy when the throttle was opened, but she'll tick over and get me round the block, so I think it's time to look at the timing with the old strobe light.  I'm deffo not going to take the carbs off again for a while !
Holidays are looming, so I'm taking the 350 to Bakewell tomorrow for a look at the Classic Bike Sale/Show and will tackle the 550 wwhen I get back end August.
Top of the list will be spraying to check for leaks on the induction  side as suggested, so thanks one and all for your input.
It's much appreciated and is invaluable when you've reached screaming point and there's nobody to turn to !!

When I rebuilt the carbs about a year ago I replaced the push-in pilot jets with new, as well as putting in new main jets.
But the bike's been sitting idle for almost a year so maybe the jets could do with a spot of TLC ?
I didn't suspect the jets because they were new, but will certainly get them out today and have a gentle poke around.
At least dropping the bowls isn't half as bad as taking the whole bank of carbs off !

Thanks for coming back so quickly Bryanj.

CB500/550 / Rough running
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:52:17 AM »

I'd be glad of some help in curing the rough running on my 550K3.
After a rebuild 12 months ago, she never really ran sweetly and was too big for comfort so I pushed her to the back of the garage and concentrated on a 350Four.  The 350 is now up and running and is a joy to ride (me being only 5'5" and 70+ years old) but the 550 deserves to be enjoyed by someone out there as it's potentially a nice bike.
So, having had the carbs checked over and with new jets and air screws in, there was a definate improvement but still an
infuriating habit of only running/pulling with the choke out.
Timing was suspect, so I took off the camshaft cover today but found all the marks to be in the right places.
Next, I re-set all the tappet clearances and on start-up, she ran as sweet as a nut - never heard her so good.  I thought I'd
cracked it, but when I took her out on the road, she'd still only run with the choke out.
Patience is running a bit thin now, so can one of you more knowlegable guys out there offer any solutions please.
(And for Gawd's sake, don't say take the carbs off, because I think I'd lose the will to live !)

CB500/550 / Re: 550 Centrestand
« on: August 17, 2012, 12:33:51 AM »

Thanks for the pic AndyC.  I wish I'd seen it before I set about making mine.  Yours is much more functional-looking
and far less obtrusive.  Don't think Mr.Honda would have approved of my effort, but it works !!

The 550 sailed through it's MOT today but won't run unless the choke's out.
I've started a new thread outlining the problem and would very much appreciate any advice from the experts out there.

At the risk of offending everyone else who came up with such ingenious/sensible solutions, I'm going to opt for Oddjob's
......'rubber bung on a bracket off the pivot pinch bolt'..... idea.  I cobbled-up a bracket fixed to the  silencer mounting
bolts today but it didn't look very pretty.  Never thought of controlling the swing of the centrestand so near it's pivot point.
So that's tomorrows little project sorted.

Many thanks again for all the replies.   I'll try and post a pic of the finished article.

Thanks for all the helpful replies guys !

I've kept a couple of washing machine transit plates in my bits box for years so it looks as if they're going to be pressed into
service.   I just wondered whether there should have been a standard Motad bracket for the job  -  perhaps on the lines of the one described by Mickwinf.

Many thanks once again.

CB500/550 / 550 Centrestand
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:38:10 AM »

Just put my 550K3 back on the road after zero miles this year (been too busy with the 350Four) but find that the chain is trying to wear a hole in the centrestand when the bike's in motion.

Problem lies with the fact that it's got a 4-into-1 Motad setup and there's no provision for any sort of rubber stopper to
park the stand against when it's in the 'up' position.

Anyone got any suggestions as to a cure please ?

Here's my 350Four with just 85 milles on the clock since putting it on the road last weekend.

I rebuilt a 550K last year but feel so much more at home on a bike this size.  I haven't ridden for many years
and am old enough to have more sense, but have thoroughly enjoyed every minute spent on this little
beauty so far.   Hope the weather stays fine !

   Anyone interested in buying a 550K ?

Fantastic !  Looks stunning. Isn't it a great feeling when it all comes together ?

I don't want in any way to steal your thunder, but I'll try and post a pic of my 350Four that took
the road for the first time in 21 years on May 26th.

Many thanks for both replies.  I'll report back after the next phase of surgery. Might even manage some before and after pics.

CB350/400 / Speedo/tacho needle removal
« on: December 30, 2011, 11:19:49 AM »

I'm in the process of applying new vinyl overlays to speedo and tacho faces on my 350F1 and have taken off one of the bezels, using a Dremel type drill.  As if that wasn't daunting enough (had to bear in mind that they were going to go back on and not look as though they'd been attacked with a cold chisel)  -  I'm now stumped with the problem of getting the needle off.

Anyone any useful hints please?

CB350/400 / Front forks
« on: November 28, 2011, 07:05:17 PM »

Hi
I'm dismantling the front forks on my recently aquired CB350F  (The 550's too big !)  and wonder whether anyone
could give me some pointers on removing the bottom case covers (The chrome shiny bits.)  Don't want to go in
like a bull at a gate.

Thanks BryanJ  -  only just picked up your post.

My 550K was first registered July '78 so I would hope any needle setting problems would have been overcome by then,
but when I get the carbs off I'll check to make sure.

Your float height comments were very welcome as, by chance, mine have been set at 14mm !

Thanks again for the help.

Thanks z1100r for replying at such length.  I'm afraid the blued pipes are a red herring, because they came as part of the deal
when I bought the boxes of bits from the PO  -  and they've now been replaced by a 4-into-2 system which gives the bike a
much better balanced look.   So...........given that I carefully removed the slow running jets and drilled them out before I sent
the carbs away for refurb, would altering the needle height as you suggest still improve the slow running ?  And something that
bugs me every time I replace the carbs after a fiddle   --     can you please advise whether I really need to go to all the trouble
of replacing the rubbers just for a test start-up or will leaving them off in the short term not make any difference ?  It would be
music to my ears to hear you say it didn't matter either way !!!
Whilst you're on my wavelength z1100r, could I ask what your take is on float height ?   BryanJ will hopefully be able to
throw some light on the subject, but it's always useful to get another opinion.
Thanks also to K2-K6 for your comments.  If carrying out these carb adjustments results in a smoother-running motor, then the
Boyer can stay.  But if there's no improvement, I'll be strongly tempted to put the original kit back on, using new points and condensers
and see where we go from there.   Thanks again for the input.

It's a 550 K3 which, incidentally, I haven't yet managed to idle at anything below about 2500 without running rough
and then cutting out   -   and the slow-running jets are clear !   Any other suggestions please ?
