Sold for £4201.  And there's another one on eBay for £9250; a fully restored low mileage very early UK model.

Honda lettering is easy to add and for my money well worth the effort.
Templates from Piki on this forum or eBay, I used Rust-Oleum Fabric Paint (£4.99 at Homebase).

Thanks for that; I've been looking for some decent vinyl spray that won't rub off.  What colour did you use?

I bought an Electrex RR24 for my 500 when I restored it.  That was 11 years ago, and it's been fine so far.  They're currently £78, so slightly more than the DSS item.

That looks exactly the same as the one I bought from CMS, which are currently listed at €249.  As I said above, not perfect, but probably the nearest you'll get to an original, so worth the money if you're trying to get your bike looking "as new".

I had one, but it sat too high.  The silver trim is supposed to be in line with the tank trim, but it was considerably higher and always looked wrong.  I ended up selling it and buying one with a steel base.  This sits lower, but still isn't perfect.  The forward edge of the trim strip prevents the seat opening as far as it should (fouls on the tank), and it hasn't got the Honda logo on the back.  If only Honda would get some new ones made...

CB500/550 / Runs on three after sitting for a while
« on: April 04, 2015, 06:19:41 PM »
Hi all,

My bike doesn't get used very often, and I'm finding that when I start it after it's been sat in the garage for a few weeks that one cylinder (no. 2) doesn't fire regularly until the bike's been running for a while.  Once it's all warmed up everything seems fine.  And ideas what might be causing it?

Cheers,

Paul

They're not that much cheaper than DSS until you add VAT and postage, then it starts to look more of a bargain.

I wrote to Honda, and they wrote back confirming the exact day it rolled off the line.

In case anyone's interested, this month's issue is a Honda special, and includes a test on road and race versions of the 500 Four.

I use Bridgestone BT45s on my 500; 100/90-19 front & 110/90-18 rear.  Can't really fault them.

Definitely down the right hand side as you sit on the bike.  Route them over the front tank mounting.

CB500/550 / Re: Is this a genuine clutch lifter push rod mod or what...
« on: August 22, 2014, 08:28:05 AM »
I'm pretty sure they were all one-piece items.  The usual reason for a two-piece pushrod is that it's broken.  I don't see why anyone would have done it intentionally.

CB500/550 / Re: Clutch slip
« on: June 15, 2014, 06:14:50 PM »
I did 34000 miles in 2 years on my first CB500, and never experienced clutch slip. I sold the bike with 46000 on the clock.  I've only experienced slippage on my current CB500 when I stupidly put fully synthetic oil in it.  Since I got rid of that, I've had no further slippage, but the clutch has been very grabby - more like an on/off switch.  I read that a cure for this is to fit the friction plates from a CB450, which I did, though only recently, so I haven't yet had chance to fully test it under all conditions.

CB500/550 / Re: Serious money for a 550....

Wow; I might have to reconsider re-negotiating the agreed value of mine now.  It's not quite as highly polished, but arguably more original, and it's a genuine UK model.

It's great to see them fetching good money (not that most of us would sell, I suspect), and although this one may turn out to be a bit of an oddity (in terms of what it sold for), I don't see why the Fours shouldn't keep increasing in value.  After all, look what the Suzuki & Kawasaki triples are selling for these days, and they turned out to be technical dead-ends.

Our bikes are the forerunners of all the inline fours that followed, and their significance should be recognised.

Now that I've got the compression tester I can check periodically to see if there are any changes.

Thanks all for the comments/advice.
