Title: Are our heads getting bigger?
Post by: Andrew-S on May 11, 2020, 02:20:44 PM
I've been putting together a Blurb photo book of my old 70's biker days for a while now along with the creative talents of a good friend, so have been taking photos of some of my 70's memorabilia - here's my old AGV X3000 I had painted in Stevie Baker colours (US works Yamaha GP rider of the 70's) next to my Arai Chaser V, were our heads really that small back then??.............but the AGV still fits though! ;D

So much padding in a helmet now we all end up looking like extras in Star Wars. Can our necks take the strain, I ask myself?

I bought a Bell Star back around 1973 after seeing Peter Williams in one, I copied the paint job as my surname starts with a 'W' and you could paint glassfibre shell helmets, unlike polycarbon ones. This is Peter Williams' original. I saw him come off at Oulton Park when the tank / seat unit came adrift on his Norton - I met him once at Brooklands and he was very interested about what I remembered, as he had lost all memory of the accident.

I paid a huge £35 for it, mail order, I was also impressed by a Bell Advert that said 'If you have a $10 head, buy a $10 Helmet'. I don't think I'd seen a full face helmet on the road when I got it, nor had the small boy I overheard saying 'Look Mummy, it's a spaceman!'

Nice story about Peter Williams and his paint job on your old lid, I always liked the original Bell Star but it's modern replacement the Bullitt falls far short in my view.

It's always a nice to keep bit of memorabilia to look back on or to decorate the garage wall. The worst thing I did was throw out my old Belstaff Trailmaster which was starting to stink of dirty wax and oil so got moaned at by SWMBO :( - I did lots road riding in that jacket plus trials and enduro.
