Welcome. If your new bike has an excellent condition OEM exhaust fitted and you feel the urge to throw it away, please throw it my way. Thanks 😀😁😁😁

Welcome to the forum. Great place with plenty of great advice so a good place to start. Once it arrives the good folks here love pictures. Good to have someone join with a cb550, it was in danger of becoming the cb400/4 forum. The cb550 is a great bike.

Welcome and enjoy the forum

well that's a lovely welcome, i will get some photos up as soon as i can :)
sadly it has a very poor looking exhaust julie, with what looks like a car cherry bomb as the silencer
-
Oh dear, you can keep that then 😀😀😁😀

I love some of the improvised exhausts fitted to these bikes, one of my favourites belonged to a mate, he had a cb550f2 with a alloy plate with sponges wrapped in gaffa tape as the seat, those metal industrial 13amp twin plug boxes from someones shed wiring as the air filters - more poundland's sponges inside! And a Massey Ferguson tractor exhaust being the 'silencer' Following that was interesting, especially at night, flames from the exhaust were a regular thing. I miss being around Rat bikes.
-
Oh wow. See now I don’t really see any problems with that 😂
-
One of the best sounding exhausts I can remember was back in the early 80's and a mates 400/4 with a real Dunstall Decibel 'silencer' fitted, incredible sound. I would always ride behind him to hear it.
-
I had a 4 into 2 Dunstall Decibel system on my 500Four for 30000 miles - thought it was great when I was 17 and used to go out of tech college at lunch time just to ride past the front of the college to show off! Sick to death of it after 30000 miles of high speed commuting up and down country! Could hear the droning in my ears for an hour after getting off the bike!
-
Had a 4 into 1 Marchall on my 500, lost the bafle on IOM and the MCH rep on his 500T refused to stay behind me on way back down M6 as he said his brain was rattling with the noise, bit like the 5.5ltr Jeep cherokee converted to pickup i had with a small cherry bomb on it------no point in fitting a radio you was deef anyway!
-
i once had a p6 v8 with scaffold pole and cherry bomb exhaust hard bolted to the floor, any journey over about 5 miles made you ready to rip your own ears off

I've been thinking about my 400 build - which may even start soon! The option of a slip on silencer came to mind for when one fancies a tear up. What were the short Dunstall reverse cone silencers with a red badge? Had a particular name and did they have a large nut in the cone to adjust the baffle? Or am I dreaming?
Welome to he forum too vraksianrebel.

They were the Funeral Decibel silencers.

I think the devibel were the later ones fitted to the 4 into 1 into 2 systems and no adjustable baffel on those

You are right Bryan.
I had Dunstall Decibel silencers on my CB175. They didn’t have removable baffles.

Might that 400 sound something like this.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MBVup4Mve5M
It is my aim to try and get mine to sound like that... as it is what I remember from my misspent youth :)

These were the things I had in mind. Very rough picture on the internet. Seem to remember full systems being advertised too and Z1000s with cut down mudguards sporting these pipes. Their riders tended to wear spotless white trainers! Did pep up the sound of the 400/4 specifically. Don't recall them being ear splitting. What ya say??

That's the one my mate had on his 400/4. I thought they were decibel silencers? Not ear splitting, just loud and mellow sounding.

Like that Mellow - like most of us on here ::)
