Hi.
I am sorting all the wiring out on my usa spec cb550, I've rewired the indicators and when I tried them they remain on with the headlight. I've removed the blue/white and orange/white wires and the indicators perform as normal and remain off, but the headlight remains on all the time, how can I stop this please?

What type of r/h swith you have? Is there headlight switch on/off? Stock usa model has it (as mine)
If you have it, it does not have any effect?

I have that switch, well its a remade one from Germany , but it has no effect of the front headlight in the off or on position. Everything else ie tail light and speedo switches turn off an and on.

Is there anyway you can remove the headlight on all the time feature?

I have that switch, well its a remade one from Germany , but it has no effect of the front headlight in the off or on position. Everything else ie tail light and speedo switches turn off an and on.
Then you some something connected wrong. With that original switch you swith headlight on/off manually. If you keep switch in On position, you have it like automatic, headlight goes on/off with ignition.
I advice you to take proper schematic diagram for your USA model and check wiring in headlight, I expect there is something modified

Aftermarket switches tend to have the wrong wiring colours so you need to sort out what happens with a multimeter ad diagram

OK, cheers guys will have another good look in there tomorrow. Good news is that I've got power and the engine turns over with the oil light going out.
So I'm getting closer.
The bike hasn't run since the 80s, so I'm thinking I'm quite lucky

What is the clutch microswitch for please?

it blocks starter - if you don't have engaged neutral and you won't push clutch (microswitch in lever base) starter won't turn.
I strongly advice you to donwload Honda Service manual from Aladdin's Cave here : http://info.sohc.co.uk/download/cb500-550-shop-manual/
There is all described (except some typos there, this is a bible you need. Forget Clymer, Haynes etc!)

The starter solenoid earth's either through the neutral switch or the clutch switch. So if the bike's in gear with the clutch not pulled in, the starter won't operate.

Sorry Mike only the early one earth, the safety circuit ones power via the button and the clutch switch does something fancy with the diode. On a lot of the US ones the starter button has 3 wires, 1 power in(black), 1 power to solenoid when pushed(green/red OR yellow/red), 3 power to headlight when button NOT pushed(black/red i think), as headlamp comes on with key this turns it off when starter current needed.
I spent about a month doing long distance diagnostics with a member on US site who had bought aftermarket switches that "fit straight on" according to the big US supplier but the colours were all wrong and trying to do a 10 min multimeter test by email dont half get long and laborious

Managed to sort it out this morning. The black red wire on my brand new OEM r/h switchgear needed to be wired into the brown white on the loom!! Looking at my old switchgear, it didn't have the black red only a brown white so I tried it and it all works.

BTW, this is comething I do not understand generally on these aftermarket parts - why the hell they cannot do it right? What cost to put there wire with right color?
This is generally with almost all - there is usually something not 100% correct, some dimensions, colors etc.. In some cases I would understand (cost of materials or some technologies no more available due to forbidden chemicals...) but still in most of cases amost no effort/cost would make prt just perfect but they don't do it >:(
