Speedo on left, rev counter on right as you are sitting on the bike Paul. I also saw a 500 K0 advertised on ebay recently with the clocks on the wrong sides 🙄🙄🙄

Thanks that’s the way I have them so they are correct

Ok now I know one of you clever people will help me with my next issue....

I have managed to source a crank (not the right one for this engine) that has the same gear pressed on.

My local shop will be able to press off the gear so I can use it to replace my broken one.

But now I have a conundrum.....

The cam timing on these engines is done by aligning a dimple on crank gear with a dimple on the camshaft gear.  The video here will be a big help explaining

https://youtu.be/aNGT5X6315Q

The problem is because the crank gear is not keyed on just a press fit I have no way of determine where the dimple should go.

So I will have to figure out a way to do the cam timing some other way.

My thought is to install the cam with the lobes furthest away from the valve lifters with the engine at TDC on the compression stroke with the magneto magnets lined up so I know this is the firing positions.

Any thoughts on my approach?

I'd just drop the old engine and drop another in. Not even necessarily even the same make or model engine. Same hp or similar. I recently swapped the engine on my mini digger from a Honda 5hp to a teschumench 10hp, basically because I found a tesumench 10hp engine on Ebay for £75 that was new old stock, more power seemed a smart move. Most of these stationary engines are fairly generic and a bit of fettlling to swap engines  can be way cheaper than doing engine work properly. Next up is dropping a diesel onto my grass mower in place of a worn old Kohler. Tesumench seems cheap engine and parts still seem to be around on Ebay, even if theres a wait for them to come from USA.

Sadly not so simple, this is a ride on mower and there is a fairly complex clutch etc that engages the blade. All this sits on the end of the crank so crank diameter, length key way etc are critical and unlikely to be right.

Just hoping a unit will pop up on eBay at some point.

Just after a bit of advice. I volunteer at the RSPCA and we have an old ride on mower with a vertical crank engine that managed to seize solid the crank in the upper housing due to oil pump failure.

The crank runs just in an alloy journal and I suspect that it has just welded itself to the casing.

It is currently in my local machine shop but they are not optimistic as they think that if try to press it out it will just smash up the alloy block.

Sadly this is an old Tecumseh engine and can not get parts.

Just wondering if the whole project is doomed or is there any hope for repair.

Of course cost is a factor here and it may just not be economic in the end

Anyone know what the female thread size is where the caliper steel pipe joins bottom hose.

Looking to make up some braided hose and need tight end fitting

Paul. Just move to Australia.... all my bikes now starting fine 😂.

Tried AUS on my travels a couple of years ago, ended up in Cairns Hospital with a kidney stone !!!.

Not the best holiday picture LOL

Visited Bris (nice city) loved the Lone Pines Koalas

On a Honda note fitted 4 new plug caps and so so so much better now.

Thanks for all,the input, glad to know it’s not just my bike but a more generic issue. Reminds me somewhat of the good old days of pre electronics and injection etc.

I seem to recall the favourite winter reason for not getting to work was “car wouldn’t start” and thinking back I too remember juggling with cranking and choke combinations on various vehicles to coax them in to life on cold Misty mornings.

I guess these days we are all just conditioned to much higher levels of reliability.

But then again is it as much fun......

You've ordinarily got most conditions (as stated) going against you to initially fire petrol into combustion.

Full choke and "priming" may not help in this instance. With the plug and whole combustion chamber metals cold,  along with ingesting damp cool air,  then the mix is difficult to propagate a flame front fully so it snuffs itself rather than advances.  As soon as you get even a modicum of heating and normalising combustion conditions the problem will reduce.

You could try initially cranking it with no choke and listen for any firing,  then without stopping turning it over, start to bring the choke in slowly to see if that catches it.
This is just trying not to overwhelm the air with too heavy a fuel load initially so that the cold mixture is moved more toward "dryness" to favour getting it to light up. A bit like holding a newspaper across an old fire place to get it to draw  :)

I like the idea of cranking with progressive choke actuation. I agree with your combustion theory as the engine catches with full choke on no problem but just doesn’t seem to pick up, it’s almost feels like a flooding scenario

My 500 four K0 starts on second kick in summer but does still need choke.

I don’t really use the bike in the winter but went to the other day and getting it going was an ordeal after it had stood not run in a cold and damp garage for around a month.

I have tried the priming trick, various combinations of throttle position etc but it’s just a pain to start.

Once going and not even fully warm starts on the button.

Carbs are fully rebuilt Gerben units, no air leaks, float levels all bang on.

Fitted with Boyer ign and micro coils.

I have just ordered some new plug caps in case some damp etc is affecting them.

I have tried altering the pilot air screws 1/4 turn either way but no luck.

Is this hard starting just down to not being started for a while and is this usual ?

CB500/550 / Very Nice 4 for sale by my mate
« on: December 04, 2020, 05:14:08 PM »
Dont know if anyone has spotted this but my m8 is selling his really nice 4 as he wants to buy a Jota.

I have personally seen this bike and it is immaculate in all aspects, I know he has a high reserve on it which may be a bit high but this is a very nice bike with some real provenance. Apparently was owned originally by the founder and president of the Honda Owners Club UK. He owned the bike for 34 years from 1972 to 2006. Itwas then bought by the Senior Technician at Moreton's Honda in Altrincham who was also a very active member of the owners club.

I am guesssing some members may know this bike

I'd have it but just dont have that kind of cash lying around !!!!
