CB500/550 / Compression test levels
« on: April 26, 2018, 06:11:14 PM »
Just been doing some more investigating on my odd sounding no 1 cylinder and decided to check compression. I am getting 135 psi on all 4 pots so no drastic difference on no 1 cylinder

That said are these readings a bit on the low side as the maintenance manual mention 177 psi

I should add that engine had a full rebuild 2k miles ago with new pistons and rings and I also regrouped all valves in etc

I should add that this was a “dry” test ie no oil put down bores etc

The original Honda made ones they came with new, some were having to be replaced under warranty in less than 6 months as they rotted so quickly, so don't ever assume that a fairly new or even brand new part cannot be at fault!

Dumb ? but is there a way to check/test these DS/CMS Pipes as I don’t think the baffles are removable

Internal baffling breaking up or rusted loose? Less baffling equals less restrictive path for exhaust gases, therefore would have more pressure at tail end.

Interesting but these are only 2 year old CMSNL pipes

Hi
My number 1 exhaust is making not the usual sound after the winter lay up
It sounds a bit like a boom boom noise and if you hold your hand over the end of the pipe it feels as if the pressure is higher than the othe 3 cylinders

Not sure if I need to worry as the bike runs fine other than that and pulls well through rev range just this odd noise at tick over

Any ideas ?

I guess I could post a vid on you tube if needed but not at home at the mo

I bought new rubbers about a couple of years ago and the speedo is definitely better, but my tacho still erratic at 5000+. I'm going to try removing it a little and balancing it on cotton wool for a trial today if I get out. It's difficult to get above 5000 except in 1st or 2nd round here!

Hmmm interesting as I just also ordered a new set of OEM rubbers, existing are well past their best!!! We will see ............

Hello.
The one thing that has not been mentioned here is.
Have you removed the inner cable from the outer & checked its condition?
I have known them to snap. But still work to some degree. As the two frayed ends will mesh together and drive. But will also slip making the needle appear to bounce.
Sean.

It’s a Brand new OEM cable !!!

Well a bit further....

Bought another counter that was known to be good and a bit better but not right. Still erratic around same rev range but not as bad

I am beginning to wonder if this is a vibration issue, the soft rubber mounts (the big ones under the gaugesj are pretty worn so have now ordered some new OEM ones.

Anyone agree with my theory?

I hate chasing problems like this!!

Are the coils suitable for a 500 four? I'm after some new ones but don't have the money for new dyna ones. Also would i need 3 or 5 ohms?

Yes I bought these for my four but never used them

I am not sure on the 3 ohm or 5 ohm ? though I am sure greater minds than I can help

Just found an earlier post from Ash a true guru who states that ideally primary needs to no no less than 4.5 ohms so these should be fine then

Ok just ordered a Motobatt.

Main reason is bike has recently become much harder to start after I noticed two of the cells in my non maintain Yuasa had dropped seriously low. Topped it up again and get ok cranking but wondering if voltage is dropping off during cranking and affecting the Boyer system I now have and thus poor starting now.

May be old fuel having not been used all winter but I hated that Yuasa battery anyway as the opaque case made it really hard to see the levels without taking it off the bike each time.

Anyway the Yuasa is 3 years old so probably due a change, can’t do any harm I am thinking

If I import a USA bike on a NOVA even if it’s 40 years pls do I still need to get an mot to obtain an age related plate and historic V5 taxation class?

I think the answer is yes but ??????

Misc / Open / MOT after May 20th?.
« on: March 29, 2018, 12:09:42 AM »
Hopefully all are aware that from 20th May Historic vehicles no longer need an MOT. This decision has spawned much debate in the classic community.

Interested in fellow owners opinions as to whether they will continue to mot their bikes every year or not

For me I probably won’t bother as I know that I maintain my bike better than most “newish” machines out there and I trust my mechanical skills and knowledge of my bike more than some testers out there.

Why would I want to risk life and limb on a dangerous machine. After all an MOT only says it was ok on the day it was tested.

Interestingly on my way back from mot last year with a pass with no advisories I noticed the top yoke had split on the rhs and the tester never spotted it!! Makes you think don’t it !!!

I keep all receipts etc. for any work done including oil changes etc etc that any future buyer can see and understand that this is a well maintained and cherished bike. After If I ever sell I can always get an mot done for a buyer if they want peace of mind.
