Original if you have one has no inherent problems and performance is fine. Getting components that are decent quality now to service more of a challenge.
UK scourced system to replace, probably "Boyer Bransden" for complete replacement of advance/retard, triggering and really zero adjustment in service. Hold very good long term reputation too.
Median choice but USA scourced, Hondaman system uses existing points/advance to trigger etc by switching on command of points, but much reduced load on the physical switch/current handling has the points life dramatically increased.

thanks. the voltage regulator on one of my bikes is seriously rusty but i have seen aftermarket reg/recs on sale. i know very little about electrics so how do i go about fitting one? my honda britain has all standard parts but the phil read rep is a mess, and i'm not bothered about standard as long as it's reliable

The combined reg/recs are very finicky on correct wiring and from what i read not that reliable, especially the cheap ebay ones.
The old mechanical units work fine as long as all connections are clean and good

I'm in the states at the min, if you want the Hondaman set up let me know and you can have it sent to me here and I'll bring it back for you amongst the parts stash I already have thats replacing my clothes in my bag.
Already have one of those units for Jezza Peach in my bag so one more wont make any difference.
Brings the cost down by about £35 in postage.
Let me know as I'm only here for less than two weeks now..... Happy to help if thats what you want

i'm on another whatsapp as well, and general opinion is keep it standard so i'll keep an eye out for better ones than i currently have; but thanks for your kind offer, roo.

Never had a problem with original points ;) I think people go for electric ignition because the can't set points up right ::)

My BIL swears that the CB250N rec/reg fits fine on the 500 and even has the correct type block connector. Can't see that TBH but maybe he means it's adaptable to fit.

You can fit the 750/900 twin cam regby modifying connections
